Members JLEWS01 Posted March 23, 2018 Members Posted March 23, 2018 Hey guys, first time poster here! I'm new to the area and I am a somewhat new bass angler. My question is in regards to fishing jigs on Table Rock. Can you guys give me some pointers? Specifically the types of areas and banks you look for and depth? Also the techniques used? Any info is appreciated! Don't worry I am far from a tournament angler so you wont see me taking your spots or competing against you. HA
Guest Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 the type of area will depend on what time of the year. right now, a bluff would work well. right now hair jigs work better, and when the water temps get up to 58 then rubber or silicone skirts seems to be a better choice. what weight jig to use all depends on what the bass tell you. experiment with different weights until you get strikes. retrieve types will also vary. right now, it is more of a lift and coast. as the water warms and spawn is over, letting the jig drop often works better than letting the jig coast or swing back to the bottom. time on the water and trial and error will teach you a lot. bo big c and Quillback 2
Members kscullawl Posted March 23, 2018 Members Posted March 23, 2018 Well being a beginner I would care less about "what bank to throw a jig" and focus more on "what areas fish will be this time of year and I will try to catch with a jig" This time of year I would look for spawning pockets...shallow, protected, small gravel banks...and then travel backwards and find the first deep water. Deep can be 10-40 feet. Just depends on the area. Creek channel, creek channel bends etc. That's where the fish will be coming and leaving from over the next month or so...they don't all come in just one wave. If you want to throw just the jig you can start there... Sometimes the jig is not the best option... jerkbaits, crankbaits etc work better. As the weather gets warmer you can move up in the pockets and catch them too...and shallow. Post spawn..fish will often come back to the same areas for a little while before moving on to the summer patterns. As merc said..bluff ends can hold fish almost year around...but areas I mentioned can hold more concentrated numbers prespawn. Good luck! Quillback 1
Guest Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 here in "ozarkian" terms, bluffs are anywhere where the channel butts up close to a bank. so, that would include creek channels. so, again, bluffs are a good place to start. the fisherman has to determine whether that be main lake or creeks and coves. bo Champ188 1
Members kscullawl Posted March 25, 2018 Members Posted March 25, 2018 My bad merc..kinda misread your post and thought I saw bluff ends..but yeah same kind of thinking. Although I am becoming more and more “ozarkian”..being from Oklahoma..a bluff is anything that rises above your line of sight and had more than 5ft of water!😁. Well it’s not quite that bad but table rock has no shortage of “bluffs”..anyway you define them
Sore Thumbs Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Good all around size is half oz. Gerald Swindle says you need 2 colors. Black and brown. Don’t overthink it. I have one tied on every time I go out. It’s a great follow up bait or primary bait.
