Potential Float This Weekend

I am debating on trying to float down the James and fish somewhere this weekend. I have only done it once before and that was from Hootentown to Mudbank after some rain the days prior and had little luck. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on where to go this weekend and how the water would be. I am wanting something in the neighborhood of 5 to 8 hours of somewhat slow fishing if the water allows. I was wondering about trying HL Kerr to Galena but have never done it before so was not sure on time, but thought may have a change at catching some good fish through that stretch. Any hot baits would great as well.

The stretch you're thinking of would probably be a decent float, you might even pick up some White Bass along the way.  Also you could continue the float on down to Blunks if you had extra time.  That stretch can also hold some real good fishing at times.

How long would that take you typically to get all the way to bunks from Kerr? 

 

Another option I've been asked about doing is a float on a stretch of beaver Creek somewhere.

I cannot remember, it's been a few years since I floated it and would hate to tell you a number.  Surely someone else on here will be able to say. I do know it's an easy float without any obstructions.  I'd say it'd be an all day float anyways.

Galena to Kerr is around 3 miles and could be done pretty quickly if you dont fish it super hard around 3 to 5 hours so you may want to add blinks. Mudbank to Kerr is a pretty good haul and can eat 10 + hours. Delaware to Shelvin and Shelvin to Hooten are around 7 miles and would eat that 5 to 8 hours nicely. Water is moving kinda slow right now but we will see as week progresses with rain fall. Had luck as of late with watermelon jigs, dark crankbaits and a few morning largemouth hits on topwater. Super helpful Dougie, much appreciated. If I end up floating James I'll report back. I haven't seen a Beaver Creek thread on here so if I go that route I may post to the upper bull shoals thread.

Kerr to Galena is just a little over 5 miles. It's a nice float. Kerr to Blunks is 8.7 miles.

Yep, just a bit over 5 miles.    Real easy to find the river miles by using the 'distance function' on  Google  Maps

One of my most favorite stretches of river in the world. Used to enjoy it a lot more when it wasn't so crowded but it's still a great float.
