Evening Fishing This Week

I'm thinking about heading down to fish Taneycomo after work some night this week and was looking for an evening fishing report.  I would probably be able to fish from around 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm.  I'll be fishing below the dam.  Anyone have a report or any suggestions for this time of day down there?  Any info is greatly appreciated.

Tonight the water is still high at 7:40 so you'll be around the outlets till it starts dropping out.

Have to warn you... I'm not an authority on fishing the outlets but scuds would be my guess.  Try bigger scuds and then drop in size - from #12's and 14's to #20's and 22"s.

If you want to catch the warm water fish, throw a big streamer at the cable when the water is dropping and after it's down.  Lots of walleye and bass up there.  Should be a trout mixed in too.

May be someone else has an idea of others flies...

They've changed up the generation pattern over the last week.  Some nights they aren't turning it off.  I haven't fished during the daylight hours in a while , but I can give you an after dark report.  I usually start at about 9:00 when the water is off and fish from Outlet 2 down to the rebar hole.  There are usually several people up at the cable and outlet 1, so I don't go up that far.

#8 Hibernators in black, brown, purple, or olive have worked well for me over the last month and a half.  You can get them at Lilley's in the fly shop.  I am fishing them on a 7 1/2' 3x leader with a 6 wt rod.  I threw some bigger stuff last Saturday night trying to locate some browns, but had no success.

If you're just going to fish for a couple hours I would start just below outlet 2.  Wade out about knee deep, cast as far as you can towards the opposite bank, and let it swing.  Even on slow nights I can manage a few fish in this area.  Mostly rainbows up to 18" and sometimes a white bass.

CLoyd gives ya a great starting point.  Like to start there myself allot of nights.  If you are flyfishing you can also try stripping big wooly buggers.  White mole hair leech patterns work well too and I think Phil still had some at his place last time I was there.  

If you bring a spinning rod you can throw sticks.  I've posted up a few reports on how to fish them, but anything shiny or rainbow patterned work well.  Especially with this flow I think you'd be on them with a little bit of water running.  2500-3500cfs is my favorite flow for throwing the jerk baits.  You can throw jigs too.  White works, but dont be afraid to throw darker patterns as well.

Good luck and please be careful.  Take a buddy if you can.  I try not to wade at night by myself when the waters on, and watch the water level too as a few of us have had them crank it up with no horn. 

The 1:00Am bite is crazy, but totally real.  For whatever reason at 1:00Am the fish just turn on.  Not sure why, but its a weird phenomenon and something makes them hungry.  It only last a little bit, but you'll see them all worked up.
