Well, I'm not personally familiar with Greer Spring. So I will defer to those of you who are. My opinions were very general and philosophical in nature. I'll have to go check this place out. Sounds very special.

I would have to agree with Gavin and Al about the spring branch.

Many years back, in my foolish days, a buddy and I attempted to fish the spring branch, hiking in at the trailhead and following it down. It quickly became apparent that this was a bad idea. It IS too canyon-like. The water is too fast and pushy, the hillsides very steep. Not much for fishing really, and borderline dangerous. Keep it closed.

I knew I read or saw something about Native smallies in Mo not being totally native to all or some part of the Ozarks. Thanks for setting me straight Al?

Spring Branch would be very tough to fish. I agree keep the public on the one existing trail. That makes sense.

I guess I was all wrong about Brown trout on the EP. I still need to talk to one old fishing buddy in Troy... I will let you know when I talk to him.

Al you going to make any of my son's games this year. he plays in Cape at Semo this year too. Not sure of the date yet?

There is obviously a reason that browns have not been stocked. Whats wrong with only having rainbows? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Just leave the river how it is a get on with your life. If you want to fish for browns then go drive to somewhere that has brown trout in the river. if you complain about the gas prices and not being able to get there, then thats a personal problem.

I just fished the black canyon of the gunnison last weekend. The browns are completely taking over and the CDOW wants you to take browns out. They are trying to preserve what rainbows are left. All the rainbows in that section of river are wild fish. they are trying to protect the rainbows. I caught a 20 in brown right infront of a CDOW agent right after he checked my liscense and he told me to keep it. I didnt becuase I had about 5 hours left to fish and then a 4.5 mile hike back out of the canyon.

I only caught 3 rainbows during the 2 days I fished it. the other probably 50 fish i caught were browns. My point is that CDOW knows they made a mistake by planting browns in the river because it is demolishing the wild rainbow population by eating the rainbow fingerlings. Lets face it, a 20in brown can eat a lot of fingerlings. Hell a 15 in brown can eat a lot of rainbow fingerlings. For that reason I am against stocking browns in the 11 pt.

thats my story and im stickin to it

I don't have any plans to fish there but on the other hand I don't like to see public tax dollars wasted. Brown Trout are from Europe and would have no natural way to migrate here and are therefore not native. If it is true that the area has no public access then why spend tax dollars to introduce and maintain a totally non-native species to it? Makes no sense to me.

And I agree with Ham with no way to vote against it makes me believe this poll is slanted. Being able to post negative makes doesn't cut any ice because a lot of people can make positive or negative comments. Is someone going to sort out and tally the negative posts and check them against the positive posts? Besides your thread says "We want Browns in the Eleven Point"

I would rather be fishin'.

Make it a back country experience that you have to work at to get to it. That should help keep all but the most dedicated fishermen off the water. MIssouri does not have much to speak of as far as a back country trout fishing experience.

It doesnt have much to speak of for backcountry because it is missouri. If you want the back country then go somewhere there is back country. Which in most cases in the US would be back east in the apalachains, north to minnesota, michigan, and wisconsin, west to the rockies or the california sierras, or the northwest. and then AK.

There are no native trout species in the Ozarks, so you are not protecting the native range of endangered westslope cutt throats or anything. They are not reproducing in any sustainable fashion in the river, that is the reason for the petition. This was started as a petition and I know the term poll is misleading , that is an accident. I did not see an option when starting this that said petition. Also, petitions don't normally have a place for people to sign who disagree. This one has taken on a life of its own and everyone has been putting in their 2 cents and that is welcome. The MDC is aware and can read this and get all your comments. When the biologist gets back from vacation, he will provide me with more info to post.

1. I never said anything about protecting the westlope cutt.

2. OMG :crywithno: I didnt know that there werent any trout native to the ozarks. WOW. :blur: I guess I just wasted $25,000 on getting my biology degree. I want a refund!! Or just maybe I should just go back and get my masters and have my thesis be "Browns on the 11 pt. Should they be there?" :omg:

Obviously your sarcasm means I offended you, so sorry. Just stating the facts as I have learned them from the MDC and like I said, I will relay the info when the biologist gets it to me. The browns can't eat the fingerlings that are not there though. The last number of years, the vast majority of any fingerlings in the river were stocked. Something I didn't know for a long time until a year ago or so.

All Brian did was present this for general discussion and posted a "poll" that is really a petition for us to either sign or not sign. I see no reason for any attacks on his motives. I think he stated his case very clearly and if you disagree so be it. That's great to give reasons why you wouldn't want the browns in the eleven point. But can we refrain from making this personal?
