Members stlskyline Posted April 19, 2019 Members Posted April 19, 2019 Using a guide for the first time for a full day and have a few questions before the trip. It looks like some rain in the forecast, is it best to bring rain gear or just use waders and jacket. as we may do some wade fishing if conditions agree. The guide stated that he has the rods/flies, but should I also bring what I’m comfortable with, 5 wt 9 ft, a few beers/tunes acceptable(won’t be speed death metal)? , assume some snacks as usually take turns running the boat asI usually fish on Norfork tailwater. sandwiches, chips provided, again 1st time with a guide and not use to having someone else doing most of the work, since the wife will be along her first in a boat and guide. I want her to chill and have a great time as she also likes to fly fish/tie flys, but we normally wade fish and I’d want to fish instead of running the motor. Any suggestions or what more I should touch base with the guide. thanks
Members Rocky Posted April 19, 2019 Members Posted April 19, 2019 I take a dry bag for jacket/pullover, rain jacket and pants along with sun screen and that is about it. My wife may have some snacks squirreled away. The morning can be chilly running up the river, so layer up. Norfork is a short run though. I usually use the guide's rods because he will have multiple rods setup for different types of fishing. Guide rods are usually equal or better than mine and I get to test them out for a day. Most guides on the White don't or avoid wade fishing but fish areas that they can boat fish, especially if they have a jet motor. Norfork is more limited on boat access on minimum flow, so you might get to do some wade fishing. I would take my boots (no cleats) and waders along but the guide may want to leave them onshore and come back for them if needed. A lot depends on type of boat and/or motor. Boat space is limited, especially if you are in a drift boat. The guide should suggest what to expect when you meet up but you never know for sure what water they will actually run. Before you start fishing, tell the guide what you want out of the trip. It may be to catch a lot of fish (size doesn't matter), target big fish or the Caddis hatch or work on a new technique. Be honest with your skill level, he will see it soon enough. I usually tip about 20% depending on what you got out of trip, which is not necessarily determined by the fish count. Good luck. Bill Babler Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Rocky, that was about as good a post as I have ever read on guide trip fishing. Seasonal patterns are always in play and your guide can tell you what to expect. 60% of the time it will be exactly what he or she said. 20% will be faster and 20% slower. It is extremely hard with persons of different abilities and different desires. If it were me bringing my wife i would want bites and let the size chips fall where they will. Your guide will be pleased with this Have a great trip http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
sfiser Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 just out of curiosity, who is your guide??? Lots of good ones on the river. Might also help us give you info since many of us know some of the guides
Members stlskyline Posted May 2, 2019 Author Members Posted May 2, 2019 My wife and I used Duane Bell on the White and had a great trip. We we able to bring in 11 Browns and many Rainbows, and we were each a Brooke away from the grand slam, the wife hooked into the largest brown at 23” and rainbow at 24” and we lost a couple that seemed the same or larger. The weather was great, the the bite was awesome, he helped the wife wife with casting and such, lunch was great and advised on wading options for the next day, had an overall great time, the boat was awesome and was just a week old, we will use a guide when finances permit in the future. Thank you to everyone for the replies and advice and answers to questions. Walleyedmike 1
