Members Jhenson86 Posted July 25, 2020 Members Posted July 25, 2020 Was fishing today when I noticed smoke rolling out of my engine cover. After coming off plane. Took cover off found my voltage regulator was on fire! Quickly dis connected the battery. And used trolling motor to get back to truck. This is what I found when I got back to the house. I am guessing something shorted out but what is my best way of tracking it down? Thanks for any help.
fishinwrench Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 Happens all the time. The leading cause is from running a battery that is beginning to fail. Or from someone momentarily hooking up a battery backwards. Mercury has changed the design of the regulators and superceded the part # over a dozen times, and still hasn't gotten it right. Yours is from about 3 upgrades ago. The most recent upgrade has a fuse link that is supposed to protect the regulator, but if the fuse blows you have no way of knowing unless you constantly monitor your voltmeter. You need to visually inspect the stator and have it tested for output, and have it tested for a short to ground. If it checks/tests good then inspect and repair any melted/overheated wires, add fresh regulators, and then retest the charging system and tach. Probably a good time to get a new battery.....unless you just recently did.

Should I worry about the stator or any of the wiring as far as possibly being a cause? Or do I just chalk it up to being one those things that happens and move on? I plan on replacing this myself but won’t if another issue needs to be tracked down.

Members Jhenson86 Posted July 25, 2020 Author Members Posted July 25, 2020 I am gonna go with the someone in this. The more I do to it the more expensive it will be once I take it somewhere! snagged in outlet 3 1
fishinwrench Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 Did your regulators have these type connectors, or plain bullet connectors?
Members Jhenson86 Posted July 25, 2020 Author Members Posted July 25, 2020 Plain bullet connectors. Those looks a lot better then mine do at the moment
