rainbow Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Phil, if you get a chance try the Big Thompson River. Its the river that runs along the road on the way in to Estes from Loveland.
jscheetz Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Hey Phil, I just got back from fishing 3 days there over the weekend. Was great fishing even if a bit crowded. The Loch was great - you should really do the stream below the Loch - less crowded and tons of fish. Did good for Brookies on the St. Vrain in the park. And Fern lake was killer as well - my buddy and I caught 40 to 50 fish the afternoon we were at fern, and you can do the Big Thompson on the way up there by a place called the "pool" - good pocket water below that. At fern, they were really digging anything red - quills were hatching so red seemed to work well. Lots of really small bugs out also - so really small dries were working the best. But HEY - I don't need to tell YOU that..... you are the troutmaster! Good luck - let us know how it was - JS "We are living in the midst of a Creation that is mostly mysterious - that even when visible, is never fully imaginable". -Wendell Berry-
motroutbum Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Phil if you get a chance to fish Lily Lake again, please do. Im pretty sure that its one of the venues for the National Championships in october. Any thing you could do would be a great help, even some pictures so I can get an idea of what to expect. pictures of the Big T and Poudre would help also. they are the 2 rivers we are fishing. 2 sections on the poudre and one on the big T. I never got to fish those rivers up there so I need all the info i can get from you or anyone, as far as fly patterns for the fall only. Ill be there the first week in october. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 9, 2007 Author Root Admin Posted August 9, 2007 Well... yesterday our van broke down in the parking lot at the visitor's center on top of the mountain in the park. 3 hours later, we were heading down in a tow truck. We found out today the engine seized up. Glad it was in the parking lot and not on the narrow pass we drove up to get there!!! Renting a car tomorrow. All is well! The van put a damper on fishing any streams or lakes in the park. Did fish Lilly again today. Caught one green back cutt on a elk hair caddis again. It was pretty windy. Going to try the park again on Friday.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 11, 2007 Author Root Admin Posted August 11, 2007 No fishing yesterday. Friday we hiked starting at the Bear Lake Trail Head and hiked to Dream Lake where we caught some green back cutts. Caleb, Marsha, Josh and Jimmy all caught fish. Most on elk hair caddis. Saw a huge mayfly hatch and fly right in front of us, got an inch off the water and a trout jumped and ate it. Great sight- told the boys they wouldn't see that again in their lifetime... it was so close and clear. Marsha and I are staying in Denver will Thursday now... waiting on our van to be fixed. New motor. Our daughter and son-in-law Josh live there as well as a old friend who pastors a church so we have plenty to do and see with them. Maybe somemore fishing!!
JobyKSU Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Rocky Mountain National Park was fishing fantastically about 2 weeks ago. We day-tripped to Wild Basin and hiked/fished the St. Vrain. Once we made it above the falls, we found ourselves in a feeding frenzy of greenback cuts. Sure they were all about 6 inches, but they were fun! Alternatively, my father-in-law tells me the blue river is turning out a large number of "photo-wall" fish this year. Specifically, anglers are having great luck in the first two miles below Dillon Dam in Silverthorne. So, what's the best part about this section of the river? It runs through town and literally right past the outlet malls. If your wife is anything like mine, you could drop her off, and then find some way to amuse yourself for a couple of hours. Tight lines! ::. JobyKSU Tippet Breaker Extraordinaire
rainbow Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Phil, if you are looking for a great restaurant in Denver try the Buckhorn exchange and order the char grilled Bison prime rib. Great collection of mounts to see and history. I think they probably have a website.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 14, 2007 Author Root Admin Posted August 14, 2007 May do that... thanks! Golfed today with a guy I grew up with, Greg Thompson. He's a pastor of a Vineyard Church here. Marsha and I have a free day tomorrow. May go exploring. Head back Thursday. Sure if nice out here but there's no place like home! Even though it's HOT and HUMID there and it's only HOT here (dry).
