Wanting to get a annual pass to bypass the $5 envelope routine, and found the form to send in for $40.  Says you can also use a 'America the Beautiful' pass from the parks service, has anyone done that?  And how do the park rangers know you have the pass without a mirror hanger?

You can just call the office in Stockton and have them mail it to you. Can also get them at the COE campgrounds around the lake. Crabtree does for sure, Cedar Ridge, Mutton, and Hawker likely do too. I usually renew mine every year at Crabtree or Wheatland on Pomme.

The Park's service pass is likely a decal or or hang tag just like the one from COE.

Have had the Park Service Lifetime pass for years and we rarely use them, but you can either display in a hang tag from the mirror as you mentioned or lay it on the dash with the signature side up. That happens to be the barcode side as well, so my guess is they can scan it through the window.  We got ours at the  National Fish Hatchery. The inter-agency pass does not cover any thing except entrance though, if there is a camping fee, boat ramp fee, parking fee, or a  concessionaire fee, those have to paid separately, or at least that is my recollection.  For motorcycles and jeeps they have decals that serve as vehicle displays.
