Wayne SW/MO Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Most of the ones I've seen on the river are 14' wide bottoms with 10-15 hp motors. The real expense comes in the 5500 watt generator to power the 3 Halogen lights on the front and the railing to hold them and you in the boat. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Well I have a 12 foot wide bottom. We was worried about weight. We took it down to the river.I weigh 275 I was up on the front, the other person with me weighs about the same.We got in it,got out in the water, rocked it jumped up and down.Seemed pretty stable. So I'm thinking using it. Got a Trolling motor, just go from hole to hole.Talked with a Local,he said just get couple Halogen Lights, run them just off the Battery, just have couple well charged Batteries.Don't fool with Generator. Truth I'd like to get all rigged up before cold weather, see how it is going to work. oneshot
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Boat capacity is misleading. A Jon boat has a rating that will float it, a motor, and X amount of weight, full of water. A canoe has a rating of how many pounds of anything will sink it to the half way mark. Basically what its saying is that if you fill your boat up with water, it will sink, unless you get out of it. I said Halogens, should have said Mercury vapors or Sodiums. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Gavin Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I think a 90hp jet is probably overkill..something around 16' long witha 40/30 or a 60/40 jet should do just fine. Lots of used jon boats on Craigslist. Cheers.
