MoCarp Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Several years ago I went to the bootheel area of Missouri (Duck Creek) to catch Chain pike. was very happy to catch a 24 inch / 4 pounder that I had mounted--I know some fish are in Current river--anybody ever catch any closer to SW Missouri & NW Arkansas? MO MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 I've been told there is a good population in the Spring, but I can't say from any personal experience. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Fish Bork Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Confusing since there are two Spring Rivers in southern Missouri. I am thinking the one that goes through Lawerence county. It is spring fed and even has some little trout in it. I have heard that there are pickerel in it but not enough to really target. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
MoCarp Posted January 31, 2006 Author Posted January 31, 2006 I live practically on it the spring river that flows into oklahoma---I have never seen a chain pike caught or heard of one--upper reaches do have some wild trout near baptist springs MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Gavin Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 Caught a small one (bought 12") a couple weeks ago in the trout stretch of the Current, but they dont seem to be very numerous. There seems to be a healthy population of good sized pickeral on the Eleven Point, we usually get a couple on every trip and we arent usually fishing for them. I've also heard that you can find them on the St. Francis, the Spring (flowing through Hardy, AR), and on the White. Cheers.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 There is also a Grass Pickeral in Missouri, and its range is apparently slightly west of the Chain Pickeral. Its said to be considerably smaller when mature. I did mean the Spring that flows toward Mammoth and Arkansas. I know that there was an attempt to stock Northern Pike in Stockton at one time and I wonder why there hasn't been an attemt to expand the Pickerals range ? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Fish Bork Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 I'm thinking of the upper reaches of the Spring I remember seeing some data of our classes that we shocked some pickerel in the region between Aurora and Monett. We don't need to be messing with every fish to make it accessible to fisherman and stock every lake with every kind of fish. No offense but if bugs me everytime somebody wants to stock fish in every different lake. It takes so much more time and money to raise fish in captivity and release them then spend that money and time to improve spawning habitats and improve water quality. O.K. off my soap box. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
SKMO Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 I have caught pickeral in Duck Creek as well, most were "master angler" size. Another place they catch them is in the Eleven Point River. When I lived over there there were some folks that went after them specifically. Members hoover25 Posted February 1, 2006 Members Posted February 1, 2006 Pickeral are really cool fish. The 11 point is the best place that I know. My buddy caught what mightacouldhavebeen a record, but it was dinner instead....rotflmao. I need to check my notes, but I think we have some pickeral (grass) in the Springfield area.
