Members King Fish Posted December 18, 2007 Members Posted December 18, 2007 I Have a Sage fly rod 5 weight.. model SP 586 3 piece.. I'm looking to get a nice new reel.. I have thought about the Ross evoultion.. the Sage reels.. and the lampson lite speed reels.. looking to get some thing nice to pair up with this rod... does anyone have any suggestions before I buy this weekend ?? Thanks PK
Gavin Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 There are a lot of nice reels out there these days. The ones you mentione are all good reels, but I'd also take a look at the Galvan OB series of reels..I'm hard on fly tackle, and the two I own have have always been smooth and reliable.
fly2fish Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Battenkill with disc drag works great and less than $90 now. On the higher end I just got a Loomis 8wt large arbor, haven't used it much but it held 300yds of 30lb gel spun and 105 ft of WF8.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 After years of Ross Reels I went to a Lamson Litespeed. Sweet drag and the thing I like most is how light weight it is. I never considered weight that much but I will now. Nothing at all wrong wrong with the Ross's. I was shopping around and the litespeed caught my eye and I like it even more after using it for 2 years. I have the older model not the newest. Look at weight! SIO3
Members Midge Posted December 19, 2007 Members Posted December 19, 2007 Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor III. This is a great real with a sealed drag system. They are only $120.
Brian Wise Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 The Evolution....too sweet. Looks good in the copper color too! Brian My Youtube Channel
Micheal Kyle Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I would agree with you on all of the reels that you have selected to choose from. I like the the Lamson Lite speed the best. The drag is awesome plus for it's size it is going to balance a 8' 6" rod the best when it is loaded with backing and line. Both reels are the same weight, I am comparing the #2 reel from Ross and Lamson. The Galvin is a heavier reel. For the drag they both have what they call a a conical drag system in them. They are both priced the same so it pretty much sounds like we are comparing apples to apples and I still will prefer the Lamson over any other reel because of it's look and appeal on the rod. Members King Fish Posted December 19, 2007 Author Members Posted December 19, 2007 Thanks all.. I think it's going to be the lampson lite speed.. just another reason why I enjoy this site..Advise from fisherman that have tested it in the field.. thx to all that weighed in on this for me.. Merry Christmas PK
Paola Cat Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Kingfish ... Did you get the Litespeed. I have a LS-2 and it's great. Another reel that I like is the Okuma Helios. I have a 4/5 and love it. PC Cheers. PC
Members King Fish Posted February 7, 2008 Author Members Posted February 7, 2008 Yes.. I did get the Lamson lite speed... I have that on my Sage SP 586 and I love it This has been one of the years I had to gear up and replace some worn gear.. new Waders/Boots.. and the reel with the line it all adds up.. I told my wife to count her pairs of shoes and purses and we'd just wash that out.. LOL! But nothing better than getting new gear... LOL! P.K
