Members King Fish Posted February 15, 2008 Members Posted February 15, 2008 I got the cabin fever real bad.. was looking to do some float fishing on the upper current this weekend.. from Montauk to Baptist camp how far ? or is there a better short float just for a day? or.. just wade around the TanVat area.. any suggestions out there.. ? I got the fever BAD! Got to go somewhere... PK
duckydoty Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I'm pretty sure I've floated below Montauk to Acres ferry before. Its been quite a few years ago, but I dont think it was that long of a float duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
jdmidwest Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Montauk to Cedar Grove is an 8 mile float, about the same from Cedar to Akers Ferry. The first is a trophy area float, the latter is a put and take fishery. Montauk to Baptist could be waded easily in a day and would be pretty skinny to float and fish unless the water is up more that usual. Might be hard to find a shuttle this time of year. I am kicking aroud which way to go myself this weekend, Upper Current or Spring River in Ark. Weather looks better on Sat, Sunday looks wet and cold. Gotta get out and wet a line and waste some of the flies I have tied up. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

Gene K Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Tan Vat to Baptist is 1.2 miles Tan Vat to Parker is 7.4 miles Baptist to Parker is 5.4 miles Baptist to Cedar is 7.9 miles Baptist to Akers is 14.6 miles Pick your "short float just for a day." Yea, I have the fever too. In fact, that fever kept me in bed last week end instead of fishing. Hopefully this weekend will be different!
Gavin Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Gene's mileage estimates are right on...The Park to about a mile below Baptist is usually full of wade anglers on the weekend..your best shot at decent fishing is to get there first, or float out of Baptist. Baptist to Parker is probably my favorite. Short shuttle and its good day float with some of the best scenery in the blue ribbon area...It can be done in a day, but I usually stretch it to two day float with lots of fishing. Put in around daybreak, fish till the suns on the water and the bit shuts down..set up camp on some good water, fish the mid day evening, then fish morning bite before paddling out. If you dont have your own boat, Baptist to Cedar is your best option. Contact Jadwin Canoe. Cheers.
Members jmerriman Posted February 15, 2008 Members Posted February 15, 2008 Gene K, King Fish has changed his mind but, I'm still going. Want to join us? We're going tomorrow, leaving 5-6 ish be back around dinner time. Looks like we're just going to wade fish. John
Gene K Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I'm going down, but I will be arriving about the time you are coming back home. Thanks for the invite though!
Members jmerriman Posted February 17, 2008 Members Posted February 17, 2008 Yesterday we got to Baptist and fished about a mile down stream. Between 3 of us we ended the short day with about 20 fish. Browns and rainbows, I did catch a 3 pounder rainbow without any clipped fins (wild maybe?). Walked the length back up and really didn't see or catch anything else. The river was high so the fish didn't need to pool up. All in all for my first time at Baptist and my first brownie I'll rate it as a success and will return! Definitely before the canoe onslaught happens.
