  1. really? 17 replies to a forum topic "where to eat around beaver lake" and nobody has hijacked it with a "eat a beaver" comment? well let me be the first!
  2. All you have to do is post on here to create buzz. =) I hope everyone who chooses to participate has fun!
  3. http://www.thefishingwire.com/story/257700 John Nichols shattered the Alabama blue catfish record with a 120-pound, 4-ounce fish. Nichols, who lives in Tuscaloosa, caught the behemoth from Holt Reservoir on March 9, 2012. He used a chicken gizzard on a large circle hook and managed to land the beast using 40-pound fishing line. Photos and the rest of the story in the link.
  4. make sure you guys report these sightings to your local DNR or Dept. of Consv. They keep track of fish kills and they will want first hand observations so please call.
  5. holy crap I think I just found my newest excuse/defense.
  6. sales tax vs shipping costs.... bps and cabelas both do ship to store now. (bps showed up to that party 3 years late) being as it's unlikely you will battle many fish that will require a high quality drag and the fact that a fly reel essentially holds line and little else, go for something with decent reviews at a level you can afford.(*around here, everyone relax, i realize salmon and saltwater fish will destroy a cheap reel and frankly so will carp.) and by that I mean there aren't a ton of moving parts like a spinning or baitcasting reel. pick a price point and look for sales. as often as my fly reel ends up on the ground or in the water, I tend to aim for the cheapest one I can find that has good reviews, but reading reviews is an art. you have to be able to read past the bitter, loney, haters with too much time on their hands. Look for the reviews that actually discuss pros and cons from a perspective of use and not just someone flaming on a product because of their own ignorance or misuse.
  7. Because the Conservation Department seeks to discourage the hog-hunting culture in Missouri, it will not provide any information about known feral hog presence or location. Why Is Hunting For Feral Hogs Discouraged? Although it seems a contradiction, hunters who target feral hogs interfere with efforts to eradicate them. For example, weeks may be spent conditioning a group of hogs to come to a specific location so they can be eliminated in a single control action. If, during that time, a hunter kills one or maybe two of the hogs, the rest of the group moves to a new area, which means that the lengthy and expensive eradication process must begin again at a new location. Because the goal is to eliminate feral hogs, the Conservation Department seeks to discourage the hog hunting culture. If you want to hunt specifically for feral hogs, you should do so in another state, not in Missouri. (all taken from that link, those are their words, not mine) seems MDC has other ideas.
  8. did you report it to MDC?
  9. no zoom but the trade off for incredible full 1080p HD video is worth it. plus the new Hero2 has even better low light performance and 10Mp still shots. scotty makes a nice little mount that will fit scotty mounting brackets. greenfish also makes a pretty awesome mount that provides a ton of flexibility. personally I use the handlebar mount on my light pole. the uw video was shot with the handlebar mount on a extendable pole.
  10. depends on what you can find on sale. at normal prices i'd say yes. but sometimes sales buck that trend.
  11. I use mine exclusively when I'm on my kayak. Best $300 i've ever spent. The underwater video is blurry unless you get a flat lens for it. Makospearguns.com makes one for $20. The underwater video of the smallmouth on beds that I shot is shot with a GoPro.
  12. there you go. I tried explain it from a different prepective ie you aren't wasting energy on moving water upwards at the peak of power.(and failed) but its much easier to understand the way he explains and shows it. and unlike what I incorrectly said, the bent shaft actually increases efficiency throughout the stroke. .
  13. bent shaft reduces paddling effort. similar in principle to the shape of a kayak blade. once you move your arms past the front of your body you lose a tremendous amount of force and leverage. the bent shaft canoe paddle and swept tip of a kayak paddle reduce the effort needed. it also reduces efficiency at that point, but the idea is to reduce fatigue. From a kayak perspective, the rudder makes a huge difference when lake fishing. I use a drag chain, when allowed, in rivers. But on a lake and in wind, the rudder rocks. Not only does it make your transits more efficient, as has been noted. it also makes it easy to drift with a light wind and keep yourself oriented in the proper casting position. I imagine it would be a really big deal on a canoe where wind affects it more. and for trolling. i wouldn't bother trolling without my rudder. with it the subtle side to side motion of the double bladed paddle strokes allows each trolled lure to alternately speed up and slow down slightly. i usually troll floating crankbaits though. that way if you hook up and slow or stop to fight the fish your lure doesn't hang up.
  14. I would like to give a HUGE thanks to Phil and Lilley's Landing for putting the banner up in the forums. It's a really big deal to me, so thank you very much Phil.
  15. sorry my bad, I'm putting my own money into this tournament and i'm a bit touchy on the whole subject after the riverbassin fiasco. I'm not making a penny. It's costing me and the sponsors to provide this event. I'm honestly doing this to try to get something started in this state. I'm kind of shocked that there isn't an ongoing paddle power tournament in Missouri as it is. Ron has hit closest to the big underlying reason why I want to start a tournament trail, except unlike BASS, the CPR format is far less stressful on the fish and the month long format, far less stressful on the angler. The month long photo submission format allows anglers to fish on their own terms. It also relieves the fishing pressure that would be present in an event style format. First and foremost I want to promote the more conservation oriented side of self powered fishing, which includes everything from the lack of a gasoline powered engine to the actual CPR format. How many of you collect trash you see while fishing? I don't' see many jetboaters/partyfloaters worrying about that kind of stuff. We are a different breed of angler. And that is why MSA is involved. And I'd also like to address the two schools of thought on tournament fishing via prizes and egos. One school thinks it's a competition for a bag of chompers and wants cold hard cash or solid gold for a prize. The other school sees prizes like that as bringing out the worst anglers and the worst IN anglers. I'm learning from, ahem, FAILED tournament trails that were giving away huge prizes and then seeing those first place prizes end up on ebay the next day. The prizes will fall somewhere in between 'dream kayak' and 'are you kidding me'. The bottom line is for this to be fun for everyone. I can't make everyone happy but I can provide an outlet for those who wish to participate. Which is why there is a low entry fee. The more people who particpate the more places get prizes. If you win a prize it will at least be more than the $5 it cost to play that month. I will say the angler of the year award will be something worth having. So it will benefit a participant to get in on this at the start and enter a fish every month. Plus who knows we might even help MDC or clean up some trash while having fun.
  16. it's 100% payout which was stated before. I am not making money off this, sorry that you would assume that this is what the tournament is about. The purpose is to have fun, grow the sport, give kayakers/canoers/waders an outlet which previously has not existed. And to help spread the word about local or kayak fishing related businesses. It is what YOU the participant, makes out of it. and I see what you are saying ron, but all it takes is a single fish to win. the biggest. a person could make one cast the entire month and land that fish. Someone else could fish everyday and not! again, I am not reinventing the mouse trap here. I'm using established rules that have worked perfectly fine for a nationwide series for the past 3 years. Reference KayakBassFishing.com and chad hoover if you want to see where the rules come from and how they have worked. All I have done is adapt those rules to a regional, smallmouth only format.
  17. I've updated the website to answer clarify the format. but I will answer it here too. biggest fish, and I'm using established rules and measuring techniques. I realize how the tail is pinched to get maximum length but that isn't how the rules read. I'm not reinventing the mouse trap so to speak. I'm trying to mirror what Kayak Bass Fishing has used as a proven and established method for the past 3 years. Points will be granted to all entries 100 for first 90 for 2nd, etc the idea is to have a uniform and accepted technique for determining length. What is trying to be avoided is people pinching the tail in an effort to gain length. It's simple to pinch and tilt the tail to gain a 1/4 inch. this way, you lay your fish on the board, put the identifier on it and snap a picture. some people will use a loose bungie to keep the fish from flopping around but i've found they typically will lay on the board quite nicely for plenty of time to get good photos. otherwise a hand placed over the fish will keep it still. if you take a look at the tourney page you'll see a couple of sample photos, sans indentifier, which shows acceptable photos. notice the one on the right has a pinched tail but it's not pinched in an excessive manner or in a manner to gain length. it's going to happen, the fish won't lay perfect sometimes. I will cover, in detail, photo technique and acceptable measuring devices at the April 18th Missouri Smallmouth Alliance meeting. I want everyone who wishes to participate to be able to do so knowing that we are all competing on as even as a playing field as possible. Lengths are rounded to the nearest 1/4 increment.
  18. honesty, intergrity, criminal fraud charges (free to press charges, really expensive for a defense lawyer. its in the rules, when you register you agree to abide by them), stern beating along an ozark stream when recognized as the cheater by others who were participating and being honest... my guess would be any one or a combination of those. =) what jet boater wants to win a, what was it? a bag of chompers? cost more in gas to start the boat than it would be worth. seriously though, there isn't really anything that stops someone from doing that, but the risk vs payoff is pretty steep. plus who wants to be known as the dbag cheater? there will be over $2000 in prizes but it's not one prize, so it really doesn't make the risk worth messing with. it's a kayak/canoe tournament, the prizes will be geared as such.
  19. a lot of guys will use their canoe or kayak to float the unwadable sections and wade the fishable stuff. I don't expect anyone to keep a fish longer than they are comfortable with just to get it back to the yak or canoe to get it in the picture.
  20. then you won't need to worry about having anything other than the measuring device and unique identifier in your photo (maybe your foot and additional pictures of the angler and the fish are always welcome too). the idea is to promote kayak/canoe/wade/tube ie self powered fishing. and you'll probably want the expandable meauring board if you don't have one already. bps makes a folding one that would fit in a vest or you could stick in your waist band. you want to make sure the numbers are clearly visible in your photo.
  21. now that's legit! nice job, did you drop on it out of a tree all rambo style and stick it with your knife?
  22. FWC stocked peacocks in florida to control the other introduced/invasive species of fish in the canals.I was under the impression they were just another introduced species from the pet store, but they are actually the answer to said species. You can't keep peacock bass in florida. the peacocks suvive but it's too cold for them to successfully breed. (so they say) either 14 or 17 species of exotics have been cleared out of florida so far by either FWC, cold snaps or other introduced fish. as far as the original question, Goonch. http://www.google.com/search?q=goonch&hl=en&qscrl=1&nord=1&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS442US443&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=hct_T6vBAc_zgge3mdn7Bw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CAwQ_AUoAQ&biw=1424&bih=697
  23. Angler and TV personality Jose Wejebe died today when his single engine aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in Everglades City, FL.Jose was the host of the TV saltwater fishing series Spanish Fly. I grew up watching him fish the waters of south florida, the bahamas and the gulf. Story is with the link. http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2012/apr/06/plane-crash-reported-everglades-city/
  24. can't get any of it right! the actual new moon is around the 20th.
  25. BillieS is the current leader in my mind. the rest of you need to spice it up!
