  1. I think the main point of the rig was sink rate. Instead of pulling down a rather large leader, its dropping strait down. Maximizing time in the strike zone.
  2. Don't give up there are some great deer on public ground. Just remember...you have to make yourself uncomfortable to be successful. What I mean by that is: 1. Don't get out of your stand all day durring the rut. 2. get away from the car, at least a mile. 3. Get some good topo maps and hunt the funnels..these are the natural escape routes for deer. When 10am rolls around all the other hunter will be getting down and walking in for lunch...thats when the action starts...as the deer will be pushed. 4. Take sent control very seriously...I started seeing 10X the amount of deer when I broke down and bought some scent lock cloths and payed close attention to the wind. You will never kil.l a big buck unless you watch the wind. Good Luck!
  3. You know what...I apologize for my comments. I shouldn't have speculated that there was drinking involved or any stupid thing happening.
  4. I'm going to agree with Smalliebiggs on this one...just doesn't make since.
  5. I guess I don't understand how this happens...could the man not swim or did he bump his head? I wade the Meramec often and the water is calm enough in most parts that child could swim it. I would be willing to bet that drinking was involved.
  6. You're going to scare away the fish
  7. I was fishing above the HWY 8 bridge and it was about 8am. I didn't see any fish riseing to them, but there are probably no trout up that far.
  8. I was at the Meremac yesturday. And yes the white flies where hatching.
  9. Dude...I'll carry the canoe on my back for 10 miles to get to some quality smallmouth action. I could care a less. In fact most of the best fishing spots I know of come after a 1-2 mile hike or wade. Smalliebigs..when we getting out?
  10. Agree..I am the same way..its like christmas.
  11. I invited a person to go fishing with me yesturday. I said "I leave the house at 7am, just after I get the kids on the bus." The person was 1 hour late at getting to my house...and unprepared to hit the water....we had to spool new line on his reel. I was so frustrated by this that I am now making it my personal rule....If your not there on time; I leave and go fishing. With that being said..this person just overslept. He did not have a flat, or get lost or whatever. How do you guys handle the late arrivals? Just curious...
  12. I couldn't agree with you more. I have just moved to Sullivan, I know that I am close to some great water around here and have just began exploring looking for good spots. It takes weeks and weeks of driving, pouring over maps, google earth, getting land owner permission ect...to even find a great secluded place that produces quality sized fish. Take the Maremec for instance...a great habitat for smallmouth to thrive in. I fish the section above highway 8 quite often...but this area gets alot of pressure. Now I have caught a few pigs out of this stretch, but the vast majority are dinks and gogle eye! WHY....its not because the habit isn't good, or river otters, or herons or my skill level...its because there are so many people that fish this are all year long. I would venture to say that 70% of the "fishermen" that float down that stream in the summer would keep every single smallmouth over 14". Think about it...most proably float it in the summer to party (thousands of them)...if 1 in ten bring a fishing pole and of that ten 1 gets lucky a grabs a pig smallmouth...ect...ect....and the dinks keep on coming. The biggest threat to good fishing is fishing pressure. Period! That is why I share information with people I know...now we don't have to be best friends..but I would have to fish with you a couple of times to see if you are a person that won't keep fish. I just don't see the point...if you want to eat fish... Schnucks has a whole area dedicated for it.
  13. They put you in above Noser Mill, and you float back to Noser Mill. They offer a 7 and 3 mile float.
  14. I fish Cardiac alot, as resent as last week. The fish are slow to bite and holding deep or under structure. You can catch fish but its a struggle, but its like that anywhere you go rightnow. Its going to be like this until we get that first nice cool rain of autumn. I like Cardiac even though it seems to have a bad rap, I catch alot of fish down there when the weather is nice and the water is low. I had good strikes using a chunky san juan worm las time I went.
  15. I am thinking of floating with Devils Back Float this Friday. I did the float one time in the past and I didn't catch many fish, but the water was up and a little to muddy. I am hopeing my next adventure turns out better. I am hopeing someone will give me the thumbs up or down....I must admit my smallmouth fishing has been a real disappointment this year. Hopeing to tuen it around....
  16. I am going to be adding a new rod to the armory. I am thinking of a 7wt for tossing heavy bass bugs..or would 6wt be enough? I have been trying to throw them with my 8.5ft/5wt Gloomis...but it really can't handle the larger poppers. Any sugestions??
  17. I hear tell of cougars being sighted around Sullivan....I hope they don't like the taste of flyfisherman.
  18. You all ROCK! Thanks for the great info..
  19. How about seprate forums for fish spiecies?
  20. I caught it back in 1990, so I doubt its still around.
  21. I've been watching alot of fly tying on Youtube, I think I am going to have a blast with it. Since there are no flyshops near my area, it will save me gas money and time.
  22. It seems that that general opinion is it will not save money. Thats ok. I think that the joy of catching fish off of somthing I created will be payment enough...besides if I am not on the water..I'm wishing I was..so what better way to pass away those too cold/hot days. Heck i might even make a fly that works so good they'll name it after me.
  23. Awesome Dano! I will PM you with my address. I will even ship you back some flies once I tie up a few.. Thanks!
  24. It was an easy wade.
  25. I want to start tying my own flies. I am however hesitant because of 1 main reason. 1. The cost of vises..as I understand it you don't want to scrimp on this...but it seems you can't get a nice one under $100. I would not balk at the price if it ended up paying for itself. Yet...you can buy alot of flies for $100. This isn't even taking in the initial cost of all the other stuff you need. So what would be a good figure I would exspect to spend to get a start in the craft and would it pay off in the end? Thanks
