  1. Love to hear that the gogglers are doing well. Floods change stuff it's what they do, always hate to see any creek or river getting choked by gravel
  2. An old 14 foot Richline and 18 HP Evinrude was the only boat we had as I was growing up, at that time we fished mostly Stockton, got a little rough at times, but the motor never gave any trouble. After we sold the boat and motor the new owners got caught under Caplinger Dam, boat didn't survive but motor and occupants did, kind of wonder what ever happened to it.
  3. If it's any consolation they are pretty much on every body of water this weekend and next weekend will be worse. I just hope they all make it home alive.
  4. https://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/WP04Web/app/searchRegattaWeb?action=Search+Again. You can seach the regatta permits by lake and month. Don't know if you can get a whole year list or not. Amazing how many tournaments are held each year, even if a lot of them are small.

    What's Cooking?

Getting a little tired of the strawberries, picked enough pie cherries today (well my 18 yr old son and 83 yr old mother did any way), decided to make straight cherry jam, 5 cups of pie cherries pulsed in the Ole ninja chop o matic, 2.5 cups of sugar and a pack of sure gel later, and son of a gun I think I might like it better than cherry pie. Not quite as sweet as most cherry pies but just enough tart to give you a little "twinge" at the back of your throat. The half cup or so of chopped cherries mixed with a little sugar you could pour over tofu and make it taste good.
  6. That Simms is a good looking boot, but at $180 it should.
  7. From March 15 to June 15 the target elevation is 841. 2 feet above conservation pool. Right now we have a little extra water so we are using it to host a swift water rescue training for Spfingfield Fire Dept. Below the Dam, running 2000 cfs. Will drop back to 250 over weekend and host I believe the MSHP swift water rescue training next week.

    What's Cooking?

Doesn't look like much in the photo but 6 more containers of strawberry freezer jam. This batch happens to be "cherry berry" jam. Pie cherries are ripening as are the strawberries, so obviously I had to mix about half pie cherries with the strawberries. Taste, basically strawberry with a cherry pie finish, pretty good but not as good as straight strawberry jam to me. Now if I just had some rhubarb to mix with the strawberries I would have some pie baking.

  10. Some of it will depend on where they are measuring the lake elevation. I assume they are measuring it at Powersite dam, which is what 20 something miles downstream from Table Rock? Takes time for the water to travel the distance. SWPA determines generation, during high lake levels they may generate at full capacity rather than see the water simply dumped, and be able to back off on say a coal plant. Also if there is a break down or some other electrical producer goes off-line unexpectedly the Hydro dams can come on line quickly and cover the loss.
  11. AL I understand, last year it was me going through treatment, and feeling like crap. Wouldn't have made it through without my wife. Between my youngest graduating high school, track meets and it seems like a never ending list of things needing doing.
  12. Looks are irrelevant if they keep sand and gravel out. Besides I looks stupid anyway usually when wading. I have an old pair of hickory striped bib overalls that I cut off years ago to make bibber shorts, heck the shoes might upgrade me a little.
  13. People that fish with me get a good laugh when they see how many different sizes, colors, and skirt types I have with me. Any body else picturing Walcrabass fishing in skirt?
  14. Wind is a pain, but I am not planning on going back to regular braid or mono.
  15. I used to wear open toes sandals but have finally given them up for wading. After a while my toes get soft and sore from banging on rocks. I have used the cheapest walmart velcro shoes they had and they do OK, but like AL said they eventually sink in past the tops into gravel or sand. I have taken to wearing socks while wading, doesn't keep sand or gravel out but you can tolerate it a lot longer. When you do stop to clean them out you wash out the socks too, then throw them away when you get home. A few years ago I fell into the "crock trap" thinking they would be ideal. Luckily I survived the slippery SOBS, they are fine for gardening etc but dangerous in the water. One of my buddies wears wading boots, like what you would wear with stocking foot waders, they may be my next choice if I can find a pair at the outlet store.
  16. As I said I use the blood knot on Nanofil to mono leader.
  17. I expect he could buy a controlling interest in Cabelas, and then "compete" with himself. John Q. Hammon did it for years by building/buying a couple of hotels & conference centers. Between what he had nobody else could get enough market to stay afloat. If JM thought it was a viable long term profitable enterprise I would expect him to try to buy it, if he thinks he can outlast it and let the rumors die down, stock prices drop and buy it for say 20% less why not wait, or Cabelas could even get broken up into franchises who knows.
  18. My view at work for a little while this morning. Cold and wet view of Pomme de Terre Lake.
  19. I normally tie directly to my crappie jig or other lure with braid. I have Nanofil on two rods and have been experimenting a little with leaders, and using a blood knot. Early in I had terrible luck with the knot, as it would often as not slip right out. Finally had to add a couple wraps, especially with nanofil, and be sure to slobber it up good before cinching it down. Still don't use them much but do have a 6# leader on my 8# nanofil to use with a Ned Rig. I may have to break down and just go bass fishing to see if can catch anything on a Ned.
  20. Walleye will often get "shallow and aggressive" this time of year, they are predators and have zero interest in crappie eggs but would happily eat the things that do eat crappie eggs. Crank baits thrown shallow on windy main or near main lake points can produce well. Keep a second rod rigged with a 3 inch or so grub, if you get a hit and miss, lay the crank on the deck and make a cast into the same place with the grub. Crappie should be moving to post spawn, chasing schools of shad, trolling Crank baits can slay them in a hurry if you find them, and the occasional eye to go with.
  21. I have noticed a LOT of floating planktonic green algae on Pomme here lately. Some days it makes green streaks in the water as the wind moves it. Also along some of the shorelines a layer of gritty brown stuff (most likely pollen and oak catkins etc), and the layer of green puffy algae, that completely disintegrates if you disturb it. Lots of things I suspect play into it, fairly clear water lets the sunlight penetrate better, plenty of oganics washed in with the high water in December, about the right time for the spring mixus or turnover, which usually sends a lot of floating green stuff through the water column before it stratifies again. I do remember while fishing Stockton back in March/April picking up a lot of "green slime" if you let your jig or lure bounce on the rocks.
  22. I am just south of Truman and we didn't get much rain at all. Maybe 1/2 inch on two different nights. I don't think the rain is going to hurt anything. The cold front and north wind may be a different matter though.
  23. I will whisper sweet nothings to the next Spotted bass I catch and expect him to be doing nothing, except maybe wiggling and wanting to be released. Walcrabass I am still fully supportive of reducing or eliminating the MLL on spotted bass statewide, I just don't think its going to make much of a difference in the populations.
  24. Well crap, I stopped and bought the brn/orange TRDs because I was being lazy, and I was thinking creek/river. Now I gotta stop by next Dr. Visit and buy some full size zinker Z's. Maybe one of these days I will actually try them.
  25. Sorry but I didn't follow about half of that. As for cattle color and bad judgement whatever man, if you want to talk non purebred cattle that is another topic. Comparing an animal that you have 100% control over the numbers is a far cry from comparing 2 species in a lake. I fully understand what walcrabass was trying to say, simply put every spotted bass removed is one less in the lake, and that helps. Seems right but doesn't always mean it will have an impact on a lake wide population. As i stated the articles are cut and paste from 3 different locations I gave none of them any props for scientific research, I merely said if I found info on a different strain of spotted bass I would post it, if it's not to your liking, sorry. As for hybridization sure they happen, look at the mean mouth pics from TR, but they will never be a significant part of the population, and may or may not be able to reproduce. I have never seen any studies about hybrid black bass being able to reproduce or not. Again I will also point out that I am not against a lowering, or complete removal of the MLL for spotted bass, I do occasionally try to point out that keeping a few or a lot even of a species that is out reproducing, out competing and possibly pushing out another species isn't likely to help out the under dog species much, granted it certainly won't hurt them either.
