  1. A few years ago I gave up mono line completely. All my reels have braid. Heaviest is 14 on a worm/jig rod. Crappie rods have 6 or 8 lb Nanofil. Absolutely love it. Clear water (clear enough to watch a crappie hit), smallmouth streams, etc. I am also lazy so even though it doesn't handle abrasion well and caused me to retire more often I don't do leaders. I did have to learn to loosen up my drag a little so that on the Hook set it will slip slightly since it doesn't stretch. Have had people tell me it spooks fish, as I am fishing next to them catching just as many fish as they are. It does suck when below freezing as it will quickly become non functional. I have had same braid on some reels for 5 years no memory.
  2. Well then I am mad too. Think you can call my boss and vouch for that I need to go fishin?
  3. Well dang I went back and sort of read through the pages of posts and the thought " I must have missed something", nope other than noting Wayne is no longer with us, otherwise what the heck are you all upset over. Phil is way looser with rules than most other boards I visit, many of them will shut down a thread within a post or two if slightly off topic. So I got no complaints there. As for the rest heck I get called worse at work on a normal basis (with good reason usually). I am sure that most if not all the guys who get called names couldn't care less.
  4. I watched the movie over the weekend. The scenery was great, the plot was fair, (wished they hadn't based it on Hugh Glass and then "modified" it). Overall the movie got a "fair" rating from me. I will watch it again at some point on DVD but it just didn't hit the spot for me, can't really put a finger on any one thing except the long cold ride down the river and a few small things. But it was better that the pathetic Star Wars VII.

I actually done that with romaine, except instead of plain olive oil I have some green chili olive oil, give it a little kick.

    What's Cooking?

In my attempt to hold down the blue collar low brow (or maybe uni brow) country bumpkin portion of the what's cooking thread, and since I am batching it for a day or two, combined with with well timed trip to the land of asphalt, tonight's supper will be a ham steak (grilled if enough propane, fried if not), a quick pasta salad (twisty kind, cucumber, black olives, green onions, and zesty Italian dressing, forgot to get a mater dang it) and since I have been craving green stuff I brought home some lettuce and salad like stuff for a wilted salad. Wilted will have a "bunch" of leaf lettuce and a couple handulls of salad in a box, with a mixture of bacon crisped in a sauce pot with a few capers and vinegar and a little water and boiling hot poured over the greens plus some radishes I found and some chopped green onions. No french menus, candles, or unpronounceable cooking styles, or checkered table cloths, but feel free to eat with your hands or pocket knife if you wish.
  8. The COE isn't spending money, they aren't going to build it. They are attempting to see if anyone is interested in developing the area.
  9. They ain't bad eating, (especially for fish frys at work) but generally if I can catch them I can catch crappie. But yeah I agree that it won't affect the population much if any, the folks that will keep a short bass won't care if its a LM or Spot, others will release them all.
  10. Oh yeah. I may see if I can rekindle that favorite of all hunting for me this weekend. I would rather roam the woods squirrel hunting that deer hunting any day. Darn deer seasons mess up my favorite time of the year for squirrel hunting.
  11. Rabbit hunting used to be one of my favorite things but when I gave up my beagles last year I sort of lost the desire. Ate rabbits lots of different ways but my favorite was always floured, browned in an old cast iron skillet, then steamed until tender, make gravy with the drippings.
  12. Viney Creek as I understand it is a very odd critter. It is not a State Park, as they I believe are prohibited from charging such fees, however it is a Recreation Area (owned by the COE)operated by the Missouri State Park (but not a designated state park) so they can charge fees I guess. I can't even explain it as am not sure what all happened on the Viney Creek saga.
  13. I have seen the video a couple of different places. While some of her points seem plausible, I don't think the part about the Government not being able to own property holds water, at least I don't think so. but what do I know. I automatically have doubts about anyone who rants and raves and gets loud about a particular topic. Maybe just a personal flaw of mine but a reasonable explanation would be more likely to convince me. In the end she would have to convince the SCOTUS and I don't see that happening.
  14. http://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/mdc-sets-new-truman-lake-spotted-bass-regulation Looks like they are reducing the MLL from 15 to 12 on Truman for kentuckies.
  15. Not that I am aware of, at least not yet. At some point they probably will but I am not aware of any updates in the near future. Due to sheer size, competing interests etc. Theirs will likely be a major undertaking when it happens.
  16. In a nutshell the majority of it is stuff no one will care about. An update was required by regulation as the previous one was from 1988. Some new maps, a re allocation of some land from one compartment into another due to usage change. There are no major changes in dock zoning or availability. Once we are finished with the Master Plan we will do an overdue Shoreline Management Plan update. Is supper to be reviewed every 5 years, we did a review but did not make any changes. However some things need to be updated in the SMP. Anyone can email me at any time with questions about docks, land use etc., that is part of what you pay me for.
  17. The Public Meeting for the Pomme de Terre Master Plan Update will be at the Pomme de Terre Project Office on Wednesday January 27th, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. If anyone has specific questions or comments and won't be able make the meeting you can email them to me at Pomme.De-Terre@usace.army.mil if pertinent I will include them in the update.

    What's Cooking?

I always enjoyed wathing them make tamales but always thought the same thing, looks like a tedious task, same with potstickers and I love them. Scotch I'm in Chiefs camp, never could acquire a taste for it, or really any whiskey, do like a few blended ones or mixed with soda but thats about it.
  20. Man it hurt to like Joe's post.
  21. I am watching Big Jake right now and it is just about to the part where "dog" gets killed. So while I have no particular love for horses I can understand the sentiment.
  22. Will see if this works. discount-chart.pdf
  23. I work for the COE albeit at a different lake. If you look back through the posts and you will see the info . The Golden age/access and ATB senior/access passports provide free boat launch and swim beach usage at COE managed areas when displayed. They will also still give the 50 % discount on camping but since they get free day use there is no longer a 50% discount on the Annual Pass sticker. There is also an active duty military pass and a volunteer pass. I tried several times to post the info but my phone is smarter than I and my work computer would block it. Give me an email and I will email the new program info to you.
  24. Back when way fewer people were on the lakes keeping every crappie they caught, and there was no length limit and a 30 fish limit, coolers of big crappie were very common. It's a very changing things any more, Truman is probably the most consistent, putting out like an ugly cheerleader. Others like Pomme a couple years ago limits of 11 inch fish were the norm one spring. Good water levels (meaning high usually) leads to a great hatch and good fishing 3 years later.

    What's Cooking?

Corned beef and cabbage tonight. I must confess that I may have an addiction to corned beef and cabbage. Had about a quarter head of cabbage that wouldn't fit into the cook pot so I rough chopped it and made Cole slaw the old fashioned way, sugar, vinegar and since I had nothing better a little milk. My 18 yr old son was drinking the sauce with a spoon a few minutes ago, and I feel like I have eaten way too much.
