I Do Like Good grits, Unfortunately Around Here Good Grits Are Hard To find.
  4. Them is some good ones for sure.
  5. Well I checked a little closer tonight and the entire orchard is full of them. Used a 15 gal ATV mounted sprayer and sprayed almost 30 gallons of Sevin and acetafid or something like that. 10 years ago I would have mixed Malthion strong enough to burn them alive and thrown away the clothes I was wearing. (Actually have been down that road). Strange though that a diagnosis of a cancer with no known cause (sorry you are just unlucky) makes you a little more twitchy about things like that.
  6. The COE pass is good for all COE managed areas. Some areas on COE lakes are not managed by the COE and thus it may not work there.
  7. Thanks JD I have some liquid sevin, is my research right, do I also need to put something down on the ground to kill their larvae next spring or I will get to enjoy their company again. I was carefule not to spray the apples until the last of the blooms had fallen off so as not to damage any bees, even though I don't keep bees. Wish I did, but that is just something I never got into.

LOL, when I had beagles I told my wife to feed me to the beagles if she wanted.
  9. Must be summer as the various pests are making their assault on my groceries. Tomato worms are normal but coming on strong but some dioel will settle their hash. Always get some squash beetles but Sevin and permethrin will get them, eventually the locust like grey beetless that eat everything over night will arrive and I usually go to chemical weapons of mass destruction that the UN would likely send an armed force to my house if they knew what all I mixed up for them. BUT, tonight a new pest has decided that not only do I not need my wormy peaches but don't need my early apples either apparent leaves or fruit. They look like about 1/4 sized June bugs and they are absolutely voracious, have my peaches covered entirely and are sucking them dry, never had them before. Any reccomendations for sending them to their doom?

    What's Cooking?

Alright if you want to show healthy, I just made up a fresh batch of cukes and onions. Mix of apple cider vinegar and white vinegar, a splash of red apple balsamic vinegar, a little sugar, salt and a couple fresh bruised sprigs of dill. My son is already worried about it for tomorrow's supper. Since he is off work tomorrow I worry about whether or not I will get any for supper. Only gets better when the maters come on and I can chunk up some vine ripe ones in it.
  11. Yes it was the mechanic, I was ashamed I couldn't remember his name, should have looked it up. I try to remember the ones I worked on as a sign of respect but time and chemo has robbed much of that ability from me. Foster was unique in his ability to give you a glare, from his 6'3" or so height and flat top hair cut that made you shrink, then pop a smile that would light up the world. Have seen him handle folks both ways depending on situation.
  12. Bill, you and those who still do that job have my respect, I have recovered a few but not a job I ever liked or sought out. The old WP guys including Pat were solid gold for me. Up here, Hutton and Foster were always available and worth their weight in gold, nothing against the newer guys just seem to be harder to contact sometimes going through the MSHP system. I learned quite a bit from the "old WP guys" on recoveries. First year at Pomme in 92 we had a drowning in March, not sure exactly where he went down, lots of boats dragging, area kept expanding except for 2 old WP guys in an aluminum boat, kept dragging the same area, finally they pulled up the victim. I later asked them about why they stayed on that spot so long, "We rolled the body early in the dragging process but didn't hook him", of course I had to ask how they could know, "Son we've been doing this a long time, we know what it feels like to roll one". Never caught their names but they were true professionals. I hate to see it when a recovery is not made, don't remember now how many are un-recovered in TR but its got to be tough on a family not to have that final closure.
  13. AKGeek, I will likely hit you up for a cup of coffee over the weekend, if don't get too far behind in response call.. Keep an eye on that weather though, even though none of us would melt n a warm rain, sometimes they come with hail, and gust fronts and will really do a number on tents, awnings etc.
  14. End of July I certainly wouldn't be afraid to go early early when possible. Likely to be a few whites popping around as well. Many times by late July to mid august when the shad are thick, the old timers always said "throw something that don't look like a shad". have seen some good things happen with crawdad colored cranks and of course the always reliable tubes and jigs.
  15. Pepe, sometimes a feller needs a vacation to recover from the vacation.

RPS, I like spicy and wife loves curry, I however simply don't like the taste, don't know why, but if you have the recipe I would try it for her.
  17. Hmm, haven't tied those, sometime the varieties are limited are home. I am not sure even how many varieties I have out this year, somewhere around 30 plants and no more than 4 of any one variety I don't believe. Purple Cherokees, Brandywines, mortgage lifters, beefmaster, a gold something, and some cherries are the only ones I can remember. I love the summer time when you can have a big old bowl filled with cukes, onions and chunks of maters in a wangy vinegar, salt, water, and a little balsamic mix. I do believe my some would become a vegetarian for a while and eat himself into sickness if I let him, but usually am too busy stabbing his hand with a fork to protect my portion. Tough to be poor and have to eat stuff out of the garden ain't it. If only I could be rich and be able to eat tasteless produce from the store and meat that didn't have a name, instead of being able to give the name of the slices of steer sizzling on the grill.

Mmmm big ol pot of boiled "dads", hopefully with plenty of cold drinks and fixins. Well done sir well done.
  19. Saw a kid the other day with his flat billed cap on backwards squinting into the sun. Odd that you don't see many folks like that playing baseball, hauling hay or fishing. For some reason I wanted to smack that kid so hard his hat would still be quivering in the air when he hit the ground. Must a grumpy old cuss any more. Of course my son used to do similar stuff, now he has leaned bthat hats have a purpose.

    What's Cooking?

Pork steaks are one of those things that semester to be made for the grill. Whether thicker or think. Any number of seasonings choices, sides etc. And delicious.
  21. NH, are those purple cherokees?. My purples were planted way late after lettuce etc. Do have a couple of other maters turning, and zukes exploded last night.
  22. I hope the various ways and styles of hats I wear don't become cool. Then I might want to be cool all the time and we'll who needs that kind of pressure.
  23. Looked like a grass carp. AND. A lot of fun.
  24. I think I like that center rod storage compartment. Lots of storage, looks stable as a mountain. Very Nice sir.
