Try spinning the herl with thread and wrapping both together. Even if the herl breaks it won't unravel and looks more fishy. I picked that tip up from a PBS show in the Northwest. I got the name at home.

I agree with your blog statement about the browns. I don't know why they simply don't make browns catch and release state wide, and let the folks eat the rainbows. Image how much more off season business the outfitters on the Meramec and Niangua would get if people where continually catching large browns and catching rainbows to eat. I just don’t get it.

I prefer the baby bass patter. All of these "walk the dog" lures are back weighted, top water lures. You cast them out and reel in the line until there is just a little slack. Then you pop the rod which causes the lure to dart in on direction. You reel a little and pop again. The lure will dart in the other direction. When you find the rhythm, the lure moves back and forth and looks like is walking on the water, i.e. walking the dog. It drives bass nuts. They are killer on farm ponds especially when you can walk them parallel to a weed line. Give them a try. You get huge explosions as some fish think it is prey in distress. However, when there is simply a sucking action that takes the lure under...look out. That is normally a big one.

Gents, Sorry for all the new guy questions, but I'm going to try to catch my first smallmouth this weekend. You know they say your best lure is the one your are most confident with...well my favorite and most productive largemouth lure is a Zara "Puppy" Spook. I LOVE walking the puppy. Before I went to Germany for awhile, I could even pick the direction I would walk it. I busted it out for the first time in two years this weekend on a farm pond and pulled in a nice three pounder when not much else was working. Will that work on river smallmouth?

I don't know about that one... I would think that most waters were dirtier 30 years ago versus today due to all the Clean Water Act regulations. Maybe that standard mostly applies to the Ohio river valley and the east.

Well I don't know if we are crazy or not, but unless we run into some bad water, it looks like we are going to give this a try. We are going to float packs and swim anything we can't wade. I'll let you know how we did if the weather holds. If it doesn't see you on the Piney or Meremac. We will be there the weekend of the 23 if any of you want to laugh at us...I mean see us off. There might be one issue holding us back...are there any land owner issues between Prong access and the beginning of the National River Area that I would need to worry about.
