    What's Cooking?

BilletHead... try them with toasted chocolate chip Ego Waffles. Very good.
  3. Mitch... I'm confused. Did they say that you are not catching that many 20"? Or, did they say a 20" is in the category of someone that is 100? If the later, that makes sense to me. I think they figure that like they do dogs. They sample the age groups and use percentages per age group to compare to the sample group of humans. Makes sense to me.
  4. These are some great suggestions... going to be tough to decide. Lancer, I think I'm liking your idea. It would be fun to see what this group of crazy could come up with.
  5. I went to the Shut Ins this weekend with my family and another camping. I waded the river inside the park above the shut ins. I didn't catch anything of size and mostly small, but I caught 10 smallies and a bunch of sunfish. Caught them on a rubber trout worm and hellgrammite jigs. Again nothing special, but I had the place to myself, trees changing, and nice sunny day; better than working.
  6. I know it sucks now, but doesn't the removal of the algae a good thing in the long run?
  7. I don't know if you have been before or not, but there are three zones, basically flies, lures, and plastics/bait? If you are sit and fish... zone three: try powerbait and worms. If you like to move around and are spin fishing - Zone one inline spinners with single hook and marabou jigs. Zone two, same thing plus small lures.
  8. I think I have to have the title because in IL you have to register with or without motor. But I'll check it out.
  9. Hey all it is a little early to start the actual swap, but I'm looking for theme ideas for this year. We have done trout, bluegill, and anything goes. Any one have any ideas. I'm thinking maybe Wollys, terrestrials, or crawdad flies.
  10. I'm looking for a small v-hull or jon boat that I can fish out of on small water. I can use an electric motor, but I'm really looking for something I can row. One, I find it enjoyable. Two, I'm getting to fat and old behind this desk 9-10 hours a day. I need the exercise.
  11. It is a sad day in the MIC house. Due to financial and family obligations, I have to replace my old truck with a new SUV. As a consolation prize, I will get a trailer to haul stuff I used to haul with my truck. I've never had a trailer before. Any advice on what to look for used or new, and what to spend. PS... I am selling my 02 Chevy Z71 4x4. It has 150K and some minor hail damage, but it runs fine. I would call it a good ole farm truck. If you know anyone near STL looking for such a vehicle, let me know. I'm looking to be around the low end of the blue book, $6500 for a quick sell.
  12. You two are nuts. That's alright you can make it up to me by taking me fishing someday.
  13. Normally I would, but I was playing around with the casting bubble. However it is nice when you can cast a fly 30 yards. I'm not good enough to do that with a fly rod.
  14. Sorry... I didn't take any picks, but I had a great weekend at my two favorite ponds. Saturday morning, I was catching bass, rock bass, and large bluegill on 1/6th road runner jig with Hellgrammite jigs. I fished until I lost my last plastic. I have been using Uncle Bucks, but taking them off the hook and jigging them. Problem is they only come in packs of three. So I asked Dr. Google and found a place that sells the same mold but in larger bulk with no pre-hooked ones. I'll let you know how they fish. Sunday, I tore up the pond bass at my second place. I normally have to fish slow at this place, but the owner lowered the water three feet. So I tried an inline, and never put it back. I don't know if the morning was perfect or if the water level changed things up. Either way, I fished my way around the pond and packed up and went home. Sunday night, I went back out to the close pond to try a couple of things out. I ended up getting some more pan fish with a beetle fly behind a casting bubble and a couple of bass on the old purple worm.
  15. Buy some 1 5\8 casting bubbles on Amazon. Tie two very small swivels to line on either side for dry flies and a single swivel below for wet flies. Add on 5x leader and a fly. This will work with flies. This time of year hoppers and beetles will work. If you can afford get a half day guide and fly fishing lessons. Have them come on site and show you the roops on the water in front of your place.
  16. No purple... man I used to have so much respect for you. Not even one electric grape worm in the box of yours. You call yourself a fisherman.
  17. Cut off the treble and replace with a single hook and split ring. Works very well, but really reduces the snags.
  18. I've never learned how to use it. I started and stuck with the old purple worm.
  19. Had a mom pass a turkey in a clearing, but the fawn and turkey didn't know what to think about each other. The stared each other down trying to figure out who was in charge. Took about 10 minutes. Pretty funny to watch as one would react to the other one moving.
  20. Locks it in place. That keeps it from crowding the fly and/or pulling it under the water from the weight of the swivel.
  21. Can't wait to hear about that trip.
  22. I tried out some casting bubbles today with a Beetle Fly on a local pond. My set up was line to a swivel, line through the bubble to another swivel, and four feet of leader to a beetle. I wasn't expecting much with the recent cold front. But in an hour I caught a nice large mouth, a second smaller one, five warmouth, and this nice gill. I think I'll try again someday.
