  1. Charlie, You might want to check with some of the folks on the flyfishingarkansasandmissouri board. I imagine a few of them have some info on these rods. I've not used that rod but understand they are goods guys to deal with. Dave
  2. I was glad to see your tip on using mothballs to ward off mice and rodents. I've been doing this for years and have never had a problem. I didn't know if it was the mothballs or just luck as I had never really read about using them but it just seemed to me that the smell would repel mice. I put a handfull in a small open dish and put a dish in all the storage compartments and more dishes scattered around the floor. Dave
  3. There was a thread on these lines over on the FAOL forum too. Several posted similar comments saying these were great lines, especially for the price. Dave
  4. FW, What's the white on top? Is it white foam or just paint? Dave
  5. I was down week before last for a couple of days. Fished mostly Z1 from spring to main dam. Had most luck in Z1 on a crackleback on a sinking line. Also picked up a few in the highbank area on a small beadhead nymph. Sure didn't see the numbers of fish in Z1 that were there last fall when I was last down. Guess they were there as I caught fish but didn't seem like you saw a lot of fish. Same thing in the riffles below the spring. I was there on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Quite a crowd in Z2 and Z3, but not many at all in Z1. County must be low on funds. Several people I talked to said the same thing about several police cars hiding on 64 between the park and town. I also ate at Ollies. Had a great BBQ brisket sandwich and fries. Probably head back in September when the crowds thin some. Maybe we can meet up wrench. Dave
  6. I recall reading a while back that some outfit was taking over the guest facilities at Roaring River. Can't recall who it was but they are an outfit that finance and run high end scale areas around the country including some for the national park services. Perhaps Tim can fill us in on it. I imagine that the above referenced meeting will cover it. When I read it, I got the impression that they would invest a sizable amount of money. Also, I believe I also read that Jim Rogers from Bennett Spring had, or is going to, take over the park store. Dave
  7. You can also simply lay the spool down flat like in the video and crank on a few yards of line onto the reel. Then (and here's the trick) stop and create a little slack by pulling back some line between the first guide and the reel. If it forms a twist, stop and turn the spool of line over and continue filling the reel. Basically this is what he is doing, but you can check to see if its going on wrong by doing the slack test. Another tip is to always manually close the bail after you cast rather that turning the handle to close it. At the same time raise the rod tip. This will greatly minimize getting thos dreaded loops coming off the reel. Dave
  8. Some great videos Jeremy. Thanks for putting them on. Dave
  9. Yea, I took it too. It was a pretty good magazine. I hated to see it fold. I still have all my old issues. Someone on the flytying forum site tried to sell all his old issues sometime back but as I recall he didn't have any takers. Dave
  10. Thanks guys. Decided to postpone the trip as I'm not a real fan of fast and murky conditions at Bennett and I'm not real crazy trying to flycast in 30 mph winds either. Dave
  11. Anyone know what shape the stream is currently? Looks like they had a lot of rain over the weekend and charts show flow is up some. Was thinkiing of going down later this week but don't care for fast murky water. Thanks Dave
  12. Sorry about your loss. Pretty low life to steal a guy's flyrod. Yes, those Ross rods are very nice for the money. There was a writeup in one of the fishing magazines a few months ago that rated about a dozen rods and the Ross Essence came in with a very high rating and was by far the lowest cost. I believe the magazine was Fish And Fly. As I recall, they sell for only $100. Dave
  13. Can't believe the Pheasant Tail Nymph didn't make the list. Dave
  14. Tim, An encouraging report. One question- what's a burlap fly? Thanks Dave
  15. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stor...97?OpenDocument Here is a link to an article in today's St. Louis Post about the harmful effects of ethanol in outboard motors. Note the ethanol producers are trying to up the ethanol content even higher. I would say that everybody should contact their representative about this but when I voiced my concern to mine last year I didn't even get a reply from him. Of course, he is also a corn farmer so I didn't really expect a response. Maybe he will buy me a new motor when mine gets ruined. Or as the article points out, maybe they will wake up when a fuel line starts leaking and causes an explosion killing someone. Dave
  16. There was an article in the St Louis Post sports section today on this. It said that the hatcheries at Taney and Bennett had very poor production last year due to flooding and resulting warm water going through the hatcheries. As a result they have reduced stocking in Bennett this year from 2.25 fish per expected angler to 2.00. Did not mention anything about size but it stands to reason that size will probably be reduced also, though hopefully not as bad as a few years ago when they were so small they were hardly worth catching. This may well reduce the crowds at Bennett which along with the already poor economy will certainly hurt the businesses there. Dave

Thom, When we get together this spring for that Mark Twain trip you need to bring some of that stuff. Sounds good. Dave
  18. Before long we are going to need a law degree to fish the parks. I've been fishing the parks for over thirty years and have never had an agent check me for a tag, lure or anything else. But just let me put on an illegal fly one time and they would probably be all over me. And I probably wouldn't even know it was an illegal fly! Dave
  19. Take it to someplace that sells and installs granite counter tops or take it to a brick plant. Both should have diamond drill bits for drilling holes. Offer to pay though as diamond drill bits are expensive and don't last long. Dave
  20. Does anyone have a good recipe for beer boiled shrimp? Heading to Florida in a couple weeks and you can get fresh jumbo shrimp right off the boat so I'm wondering the best way to boil them. Dave
  21. I've got the 8 foot in a 4 weight. As Tim said, very nice rod. You got it a a nice price too. Dave
  22. Also check out Lesinserts. He has a web site and custom makes and sells some outstanding real seat inserts. Not sure of the web address but if you can't locate it, pm me and I'll look it up. Dave May be called "inserts by Les"
  23. If I were a fish, I'd eat that in nothing flat. Dave
  24. Sounds like a "fish story" to me--but a pretty good one. Dave
  25. Phil, If you still have some please put me down for one. Thanks Dave
