Why Cant The Media Cover This
Jack Jones replied to Feathers and Fins's topic in New News and General Discussion
Because this is more the reality of guns........ http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-prosecutor-killed-shot-times-courthouse-article-1.1252117 http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/body-70-year-old-suspected-phoenix-gunman-possibly-found-apparent-suicide-article-1.1252072 http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/pendleton-wrong-place-wrong-time-cops-article-1.1252002 http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/01/us/standoff-in-alabama-kidnapping-continues.html?ref=us -
I went to Wilson's Creek Battlefield today and while driving back saw a sign for canoe/camping down a sideroad. I believe it was Wilson Rd. off of Highway ZZ. Went down that way and saw something that look like it used to be a campsite of sorts. Then I came to a dam that Terrill Creek passed over, with the sign saying no trepassing, so I just turned around. The area intrigued me. Anyone have any information on that old campsite, or the houses and such on the other side of that creek? I'm feeling nosy. I looked over it with Google Satellite for all the good it did.

Heard about Beaver. Never been. Is it wadeable? Where do you access? Can you paddle it?
-
I got my answer yesterday....not very deep. I took the canoe out for about an hour and paddled up from the park. It was real darn windy. That made for some work getting back down. I was battling the gusts. Where I was paddling, I had no problem seeing bottom the whole time, the root wads, and tree stumps. Unfortunately, what I didn't see was fish. Not one. I thought about heading down to the Hooten Town access, but by that point I really wasn't interested. I didn't want to make the drive just to find a lower river with little to no fish. Maybe this afternoon, I'll hit Taneycomo.

What Should We Do About Mass Shootings?
Jack Jones replied to jdmidwest's topic in New News and General Discussion
3 different accidental shootings, 3 different gunshows, 5 people shot. And then this.... http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/police-henry-county-teen-accidentally-shot-and-kil/nT3CG/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Good things we have all these "responsible" gun owners exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. I feel safer already. Funny, I don't remember anyone ever being shot at a Fishing Expo. -
Well, I've floated my canoe up and had fun, but I was wondering because I've been thinking of trying out some fly rodding on it. Didn't know if I should consider a sinking line or not?
-
I know it gets more shallow as you head up river, but before it splits, how deep is in between the dam and the split? Anyone know? RS?

Well that proves my point Wayne. Greedy wealthy landowners. Not common people necessarily. And even If what you say is true, what relevance does that have to us in 2013? It's not like we're going to attempt armed revolt against the US government.
-
That's not wholly correct DaddyO. When read within the context of the entire document, and in the context of the historical negotiations to put the document together, the purpose of the amendment was to allow for people within the militia to keep and bear arms, with the militia being under control of the states to maintain order and put down insurrections. Specifically, slave insurrections, which were fairly numerous in that time. The 2nd Amendment was a conceit to the Southern states to placate them since they were afraid that federal control would prevent them from having these militias to corral errant slaves and slave revolts that could potentially lead to the Federal government freeing said slaves (which it eventually did ---- remember, that wasn't a state's rights decision). It was also never there to protect the right of citizen's to fight against the 'tyrannical government'. If that were the case, where's the Constitutional right to insurrection when I feel tyrannized, and who determines when the government is too tyrannical? Remember, the a great many of the British citizens at the time were horrified by the action of the domestic terrorists we now call 'revolutionaries'. They had no interest in separating from the mother country. An even greater number were apathetic to all of it, much like today. In the end, it was all about a minority that was able to gain control and impose its own interests, with design on acquiring more land, more money, and more property. Hence.....the Revolutionary War and Constitution of the United States of America. The 2nd Amendment was never specifically about a single person's right to own a firearm for personal defense. However, it has since been interpreted as such and that's fine. However, as with all rights, they are to be tempered with reasonable regulations, which will always be subject to change as time and circumstances evolve. That said, I didn't find any of the proposals I've seen so far too onerous that they would prevent the majority of the people who hunt or who shoot sportingly from owning firearms and exercising personal home defense.

Relax Smallie, I already knew that they weren't, LOL. At least, not everywhere. Some places maybe....... Don't let the sarcasm get to you....it's just a symptom of a liberal Northeastern upbringing.

I've used missouricanoe.org before also. Gavin, what's the best way to check on accesses there if you're not local? I'm thinking probably best to stick to MDC accesses. Anyone have any luck with Google Earth in determining likely access points listed on that site? Sorry for the thread jacking! To keep it semi-relevant, I will say I went through Gasconade Hills and had a very good experience. I would use them again.

Having Trouble With Videos
Jack Jones replied to Justin Spencer's topic in Messages for, and from, the Admin
video comes through for me too. Maybe you're missing a plugin? Have you updated your Adobe flash payer, and other plugins? -
This was a horrible tragedy. Reading some of these posts, with their criticisms and Monday morning quaterbacking, I'm so glad to see that Christian compassion that's so prevalent in the Ozarks.
-
I've done well with rust midges and zebra midges. Usually size 18 or 20. Some folks swear by blood worm midges, but I've never done well on the red.
-
THAT is significantly different from what I remember ice fishing to be!!!

All the hoops in the world don't mean nothing if they don't pick up their pigskin game. That said........................GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad RS posted the link to the News-Leader article. I don't tend to read that paper often. I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I've almost convinced the wife to act as my shuttle this year so this should be really cool.

Lilleys' Lake Taneycomo Fishing Report, January 8
Jack Jones replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Supposed to be a warmer weekend this weekend. Might have to get my fair weather fishing butt down there and see what I can do. Hard to believe, but it's likely been since November since I've fished. -
How Is This Economy Affecting Your Fishing?

Okay, I was a lazy bum. I never set an alarm and, for once in a great while, my three year old slept late. Which means, I got to also. Didn't even get my butt out of bed until 11:30. Looked at the temperature. It's 27 degrees out. I don't care what Phil says, that's cold! Hope everyone who did go had a good time and caught a lot.
-
Looks like it's gonna be a cold one. Flurries and a whopping high of 32. Wow. If I go, it may not be for too long. Probably won't be making food this year since it's not a definite that I'm going. What time is everyone congregating? Noon?

I get the feeling woodman may be right. On all the streams I've paddled, I've never seen a conservation agent. For what it's worth, I did call the State Police Inspection Unit. I got passed to one guy who swore up and down that you can't title something that didn't come with a title to begin with. Then he claimed that's what it is for cars, trucks, and such. Then he stated he wasn't sure about boats, and definitely not sure about canoes. That was helpful. So then he put me in the voicemail of the person who deals with boats. I left a message about 1:30 p.m. I never got a call back. If I don't get a call back by Wednesday or Thursday, I'll try again.
-
I suspect you're right about that Justin. Most likely I'd be on the James, Lake Springfield, and Fellows with it. Potentially the Gasconade. I'd also like to try Pomme De Terre at some point. Never fished there. Unfortunately, my employer is a stickler about such things and would notice if my name came through with a ticket. It would cause me issues. So, sadly, I'll have to do it right or not at all. I'll call Troop D in the morning.

Thanks Daryk. It does seem like quite a bit of trouble. I checked that serial number and if it's the same as your saying it looks like this was from 1989. My recollection is that the boat was at one time registered in Minnesota. There was a sticker on it, but that was ten years ago. It changed hands at least twice since then if I remember what the person I bought it from said. I imagine that the only last known registered owner would be up in Minnesota. I don't recall the name of the person I bought it from. I paid cash. If they did give me a Bill of Sale, I've since lost it. Was the boat you titled actually abandoned Daryk? In my case it's not really a piece of abandoned property. Just no known title or Bill of Sale.

So I emailed the DOR this week because I was a little bored. I advised I was planning to put an electric trolling motor on my canoe later this year and asked about the process to register. The first response I got was: " Yes, the unit must be titled and registered if it is powered by anything other than paddle or oar. You will need to have an inspection completed on the unit (http://dor.mo.gov/forms/798.pdf). a. Due to the fact that you will have to have the inspection, the paperwork will need to be processed through the central office in Jefferson City." So I looked at that particular form online and asked a question to clarify the process further. They responded: " Once the inspection is complete you may either hand deliver the paperwork to Jefferson City or you may mail it. If you apply by mail you will also need to include a title application (http://dor.mo.gov/forms/93.pdf)." Wish they had told me about that form earlier too. So finally, I emailed again, pointing out that the back of form 798 states that "THE INSPECTION PORTION OF THIS FORM MAY BE PERFORMED BY ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER EXCEPT THAT 1985 AND NEWER MODEL VESSELSMUST BE INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED AGENT OF THE MISSOURI STATE WATER PATROL, MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL, OR MISSOURI CONSERVATION COMMISSION." What I want to know is how does one arrange for an authorized agent to inspect a canoe? I don't know where to begin on that one and the DOR couldn't answer that one either. Also, in looking at the application for title, I dont even have most of that information since I don't know the name of the person I purchased it from and I paid cash. Also don't know when the canoe was manufactured. So if anyone has done this before, please help.
