  1. Thank you for all of the replies. I tied up some heavy stonefly patterns but i dont know the size because i ran out of fly tying hooks and used an aberdeen hook. how far away should the heavy fly be away from the indicator?
  2. Tomorrow I am floating the 11 Point with a fly rod. What tippet size is appropriate for this river?
  3. Back from Roaring River, the fishing was really good in zone 2. Most of the fish were caught on orange Glo-balls under an indicator and a couple of fish took a Crackleback in the morning. Also, the big fish in zone 2 liked Zonkers. In zone 1 the fish like all colors of Glo-balls, San Juan Worms, Baby Buggers, and Cracklebacks. Also, thank you Tim for all of the tips and advice, much appreciated!
  4. Tomorrow Im going down in the morning and will be stopping at Tim's to spend some money. I post a follow up on the trip when I get back
  5. I picked up a TFO signature series rod at bass pro today, it casts very good and is now a rival to my Redington Red Fly 2. I have not taken it to the river yet but it will be broken in at roaring river on monday and tuesday. I really like the green color of the blanks but I wish it came in a 4 piece model because it is an 8'6 5wt which is still pretty long broken down in 2 pieces. Other than that, I think that this is one of the best rods you can get for the price.
  6. Those lures look REALLY good!
  7. Can Anyone please give me the recipe for these 2 flies? Thank you
  8. Recently my brother and I went to Lake Galena in Galena, Illinois and did some panfish and bass fishing. I was having some great success on a scum frog fished over grass, algae, and weedbeds. We were fishing on a really big rock which hung out over the water providing cover for fish. My brother was reeling a 8-9 inch crappie and when the crappie was right up next to the rock, two bass come out and proceed to try to attack it. My brother repeated this while I tied on a white shad rap to try and trick the bass into thinking it was the crappie. The smaller bass, whack I estimated to be in the 4-5 lb range took it and I reached my hand out to grab it, it wriggled and threw the hook. The larger one which was twice as big as it's little brother insisted on snapping at the crappie and bluegill my brother was reeling in. We tried everything to catch that fish but to no avail. It REALLY wanted it's prey to be big and lively. The largest lure I had was a KVD 1.5 which didn't get down the the big fish's level and wasn't even considered a meal my the big bass. Next time I visit up there, I will be armed to the teeth with large lures. Lake galena is a great lake and if you wanted, you could catch panfish all day. Don't forget this lake has trophy tiger musky. By the marina there was a dead one with a little 5/0 hook in its mouth. Its mouth dwarfed the hook and I said "This is someone's fish story sitting dead in the water." Anyway I just thought I would share this with you all.
  9. NIce video, it was really good. What fly was used to catch them.
  10. Do you think that peacock herl could be substituted for the dubbing? And do you tie the mallard over the bead or behind it?
  11. Does anyone have the recipe for this fly?
  12. Wow, you would think they would have a backup plan in case something like this happened. Very unfortunate.
  13. I did fast 2 inch strips and a couple of pauses without a strike indicator. I just watched the line and felt for resistance.
  14. Today I walked into the fly shop at bass pro to buy a new vise and get some tying materials I needed and I saw about 6 or 7 hackles that were sold out. So then I came home and I was looking for hackle on ebay and saw one climbing into the $400 range. Really, 400 bucks for chicken feathers to put in your hair. I really hope this ends soon
  15. Last time I went, I came across a little tiny pool with a 1 1/2 pound rainbow inside which i rescued. After I released it I felt the pool and it was very warm, a couple more hours in there and the trout would have died
  16. Lol, that is really funny
  17. Went to the golf course today for some fly rod fun. I caught a bunch of bass and some huge bluegill. sorry I cant get the pics up right now, all were caught on olive, black, and brown wooly buggers, the biggest of the fish was a 2-3 pound bass, a load of fun on a 5 wt!
  18. Thanks for all of the suggestions guys, i went out for some bass fishing and the new batch of buggers I tied had the hackles laid back towards the tail. That seemed to help as well as stiff mono.
  19. Yep, this is a classic trout park situation right here. Almost every time I go BSSP I will run into someone who acts really immature. I hate it especially when you walk a few steps away to tie on a new fly and when you turn around someone took the spot you were just in.
  20. The MDC rules and regulations says nothing about hooks other than they must be flies and all fish have to be released unharmed immediately, I'd say it is ok but I'm not the one to ask
  21. I started tying wooly buggers a coule of days ago and have been testing them out and found that they are causing line twist. I havnt had this problem with the wooly buggers i ordered online though. any thoughts on ehy this is happening? P.S.- They are bead head buggers
  22. I am heading down to the river on July 10-12, is the hopper fishing usually good that time of year? If so, what patterns should I tie? Thanks for the input!
  23. I will be fishing at the rivercut place and am wondering what I should use. Thanks for the help. P.S. I will be using a baitcaster
  24. Does anyone have something to say about theses rods? They look pretty good for the price.
  25. The pond behind my house that has dropped 7 feet in 5 years has now accumulated about 2-3 ft of water, the James River I'm sure it is a raging torrent of chocolate milk right now.
