  1. Dunno man...I guess fish counting is is better than waisting your money at the casino, nudey bar, or golf course. I dont count much past 20...and I tend to get bored with catching cookie cutter sized fish one after another. If I'm catching allot of fish...I change the game & swing for the fences. Pick out the fish I want to catch...sneak into postition and make one well placed cast to a prime lie instead of peppering everything in sight. Lay back & enjoy the scenery or just hang back and watch a friend catch fish. People, places, fish....in that order.Cheers.
  2. No go for me...too many conflicts that weekend...but keep us posted on your class dates.
  3. Specks of dust, and dreams at the moment...I promised a fellow some flies for an auction in October so I'll have to get to tying soon. Cheers.
  4. Regan's Hex...da bomb when spinners are falling......I add a bit of white to the post after I finish the body. http://www.grandrivertroutfitters.com/files/Download/Regan%20Hex.pdf Robert's Yellow Drake...tied by Sam Surre...top notch tier. Great Hex Dun.. http://flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/060407fotw.php It was a bit cold Thursday & Friday...warming up again though...bet the bugs come back.
  5. September 24..I've never floated the Elk, James, or Finley, but I've done a bit on the G. Nade. Definetly interested, might even bring my wife........Let my check the calendar.
  6. Thats a tragedy....Best to the family... The Meramec is pretty easy to float for the most part, but its got some high consequence water on it. Screw up in the wrong place down there, and you will be in trouble. I've spent allot of time on it, but I'm always wary of that river. Too many sad tales over the years.
  7. Snagged, the White Fly I'm talking about is the Ephoron Luekon (sp?)....size 12 or so...Usually August/Sept at dusk and into the gloaming...Hot weather, fickle fishing, and a long walk up the hill in the dark. Which fly are you talking about...the only thing that comes to mind are the little celery colored midges that hatch at Meramec in the fall winter.
  8. 320 fish in 24 hours on 30 miles of water......Thats 13.33 fish per hour, or 10.67 fish per mile. No 20" fish, and half of em under 12"...you probably sore lipped 2-3% of the fish on that stretch of the Jack's Fork....Think I'd find a way to be more selective in the future.
  9. I've heard there are some white flies coming off at dusk.......but the fish werent on them.
  10. The two patterns that I use for hex come from Michigan...The Robert's Yellow Drake for the dun, and the Regan's Hex for the spinner. You need to find the right kind of bottom for hex as well...They are burrowing mayflies, so youll find them in spots with silty or mucky bottoms. Cheers.
  11. Nice Justin...I'll bring you some hex patterns next time I'm down..The duns are yellow, but the spinners are kind of dark brown....Another possible would be the Autumn Sedge...its a big caddis bout a size 6-8 that hatches at night this time of year....A Madame X in approppriate colors often does the trick...even during daylight hours. Hex http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/32/Mayfly-Hexagenia-limbata-Hex/index.php Autumn Sedge http://bugguide.net/node/view/85436
  12. Cedar to Two rivers is a long fricking haul...It will be hard to get much fishing in, IMO, but here you go... Cedar to Akers fishes well for stocked rainbows and its got a few smallmouth in it...Best smallie spots are the slow holes between Cedar & Welch Spring. Trout will be in the faster water. Not many smallmouth between Welck & Akers, but the first mile of that stretch is probably the best trout water. Leaches, nymphs & eggs are all youll need for those trout..Might bring something brown to fish on the bottom for smallies, and something that looks like a minnow. Try to find Medlock Cave, and take a dip at the W... Akers to Pulltite...the scenery is great, but the fishing usually sucks...enjoy the scenery... Pulltite to Round...the smallmouth fishing starts to pick up again, and it gets even better below Round Spring. Paddle up Cave Spring, and check out Pulltite Spring, and bring a couple extra flashlights so you can hike back into little gem cave. Have a wonderful trip.
  13. Theres a two fly event at the Troutbust this year...not sure about the details but you could ask Jim..My wife and I were planning to go. http://www.ozarkflyfishers.org/graphindex/octoberfest.pdf
  14. Thanks for the tips gents...gonna leave the boat at home.
  15. Think we might head down to Sam Baker this weekend...Big Creek guage says its flowing at 40cfs...to low to float, or should I bring the boat?
  16. Think I paid around $175 for both of those fly boxes. Trout Bum BBQ up in Grayling, MI six, maybe seven years ago...It was for a good cause and I was well lubricated....You could have the set for less.
  17. The tadpollies aint for sale....but I see lots of count downs in #7.I could wander downstairs and inspect again...but here is my best guess...The jointed raps are j-5's...so it looks like there are several cd-7's, & cd-5's.probably a cd or f-3, an f-7, f-9, and f-13...but thats just my best guess......would be willing to trade for some CGB tarted up tadpollies.
  18. Lot #2 the Subwalks...measure at 3.75" Lot #4 the Pins,,,measure at 2.75" #9 the Rebels measure at 4.5" #12 the Sammy's are 65mm... #14 the fly box...bought that in Grayling, MI...supposededly antique barnwood, but I havent a clue..Saw it bought it, but I'm not that organized. #15...another fly box w/o little name tag holders...same maker as #14...both would make a nice small retail display..
  19. I've got way too much stuff.. All in good to excellent condition...None must go, but make me a reasonable offer and it can be yours. Post any questions here for the benefit of all potential buyers, but shoot me a PM with your offer..if accepted you pay the price we agree upon plus actual shipping when it arrives at your door...Dont like it, send it back within a week and you pay the postage both ways. WYSIWYG...not willing to split the lots at this time..Next stop Ebay.
  20. Would love too take a whitewater or a canoe poling class...Tell me where and when, and I'll try to get there.
  21. Glad you guys had a good trip....I know a few of those bridges, thanks for the report.
  22. Sounds great...hex fishing is allot of fun...I've never done that well with the nymphs, but I love fishing the spinners & duns.....the trick with the spinner is to cast your fake hex spinner next to a real one that just hit the water...gulp, gulp..zing! Spinner fall is usually around dusk, emergence after dark..Trick with the emergers is to listen for a gulper, then cast that way in the dark.
  23. I agree with AL....floated from Peters to Devils Back a couple years ago. There's probably 5 miles of frog water on that float...Managed to catch some crappie and a few nice LM in the frog water, but the smallie fishing wasnt that great IMO..Much better between Noser & Reiker but youll have to secure private access. Cheers.
  24. Hi All, Not sure if you are aware of this...I wasnt...My friend alerted me to this today.. http://www.doi.gov/americasgreatoutdoors/Godfrey-Information-Session.cfm/ The feds are gonna be in Godfrey, IL on the 20th, and they want some input on how to connect folks to the outdoors and improve the environment. I think that it might be a way to get something you care about on the national radar, and with the way or government spends these days it just may happen. My wish list......a public wade fishing access at any new bridge over a permanent stream...more protection for the ONSR, & 11pt...Head over to the meeting if you can make it.
  25. Heres a trick for marabou, bucktail or similar materials...measure the material, and cut it to length from the butt end before you tie it in...If you trim the butts after you tie it on, you end up with a big jig collar or a fat head. Cheers.
