I've never built on a north fork. The reason is that I like fast blanks. Xf for a lot of applications. They have been proven to be on the slow side of their ratings which is a shame. If somebody would make an equivent to the loomis bcr series rods I'd be a happy camper! The 13 Fishing rods are nearly worth buying just to use the blanks.
Well that's a bummer to hear about lamiglas.
I have built on one high mod mhx. It didn't have the same power as the standard mhx equivalent. It was the mb844. It felt a half power less roughly. I've built several standard mhx mb844's. Again good blank and fast but not as sensitive as I'd like.
The high mod I built was insanely light. I used as little Eva as I could to make the grips, split the reel seat, used as few micro guides as I could, and as little thread and epoxy. If I remember right it was under 3oz. Not bad for a heavy power 7' rod. Sadly it's in grand lake somewhere with a steez on it. It still stings a little to talk about. I have a similarly built standard mhx that weighs 3.5oz.
This defines this whole topic! I don't throw everyone in a jersey under this bus but we all know who they are when we see them.
That said I do buy tshirts with different manufactures names on them that fit whatever hobbies I like. Glock, s&w, daiwa, ford, whatever.
Hmmmm that's good information. I've seen them on the site and heard they were likely the same but I've never really paid attention to them.
Keep your eyes on Fuji. They are making prototypes that are getting good numbers. Weight power and speed.
I've been kinda itching to try some of lami's newer xf stuff. I wish someone local carried their rods so I could get a feel for them.
Ticks this year were absolutely crazy while turkey hunting. I ended up with Lyme disease, or at least the symptoms of it. I passed on taking the blood test to confirm it since going to the doctor is bad enough. Antibiotic cleared me up. After this years miserable turkey hunting for us I may just stay in the boat next April where the ticks can't get me.
Good point. I forgot about those. I've built on several mhx blanks. So far so good. Not the most sensitive blank out there but the price is right and they're light.
That's interesting. I have zero interest in trout but it would be cool to run up there and try to catch one that has a little more free range. More than anything I just want to see the area. It would be a neat change of pace to take the family up there from time to time.
I wonder what the elevation difference is there between now and before they flooded the lake?
Thanks for the reply. I personally prefer longer rods but that's me. Not just for casting but taking up line on the hookset. Like you (only opposite)it's just what I'm comfortable with.
I'm with you on simple clean wraps. I admire the craftsmanship in good thread work but I'm big on saving weight. Besides a single wrap of metallic thread looks good enough for me. I look forward to seeing the pics!
This said I'd like to build a 6' spinning rod for pitching finesse worms around docks. I basically turn the rod upside down and point it at the water to initiate the pitch so a long rod just won't work.
So there aren't any real surprises up to at least 62? Just basically keep it in the middle more or less?
Also when you say it transitions to trout at what point are you talking about?
Thanks guys.
We have some generous friends that let us use their cabin that's about 1.5 miles up river from Eagle Rock. I've only been as far as the bridge at Beaver, basically where the railroad support beams got washed out last year. How far beyond this point is it feasible to run in a bass boat? It's something I've always wanted to do but I like my lower unit attached to the outboard so I've been scared to try. I know there's gravel bars etc a ways up from there. Going up and getting some true river fishing sounds like a blast though. Ideally I'd have to ride with someone that knows the area well.
Farthest I've been;
Very cool. Please post a report of your trip. I would like to fish that one myself or the big bass bash in July. As of right now though it's just wishful thinking.
Here's my rig tonight on the way home tonight from Stockton. On the way we stopped by Buds Bait. I saw the OAF stickers and put them on the boat. I know very few of the people on this site are in reasonable driving distance to Buds Bait but I'll say it's got quite the selection now! It's came a loooooooong way from where it used to be. I'm going to check with them first from now on before ordering or buying at the box stores.

No luck on the cats around ruark so we started bass fishing. We had a good afternoon/evening. My youngest caught his first jig fish and my oldest caught a keeper jig fish as well. I caught quite a few bass and around 5-6 keepers. All of our bass fishing was in one cove on the east side about half way to mile long bridge. Shaky head, wobble head, and a buzzbait did my catching.
Oh yea I sight fished a 5-7lb carp. That was hilarious. I saw him by a log and pitched the shaky head by him. He turned and chomped down on it and it was on. It was the first time the boys have seen one close up.
Very cool. I'd like to be headed there now but since it's raining (thank goodness) and I'm the only one awake I'll have to hang loose and see what my little crew wants to do. I'd think this morning would be a fun one on the water.
