    You guys are getting me FIRED UP ! You Stockton/Rock fellas are always about 2 weeks and 1 good rainstorm ahead of us up here, so I am on the edge of my seat.....hitting refresh on the weather page every couple hours.

    I happened across one of the few remaining 1636 jons, and I'm keeping it specifically for the Niangua/Gasconade. I built a nice short-shaft 15hp 2S for it and it just feels perfect for that river. Anything too shallow to run through under power is easy enough to pole/paddle/or drag over. No more shuttling and I can haul as much gear, food and firewood as I want to.

    I have yet to fish any bait on a Smallmouth stream that cleans up like a 5" worm on a slider head, or a tube bait, so I always have one or the other tied on. For topwater and mid-level presentations I reach for the fly gear.

    Here's a quick extra step that I saw done on a marabou jig. A ball of material (in this case-eztaz) that is slightly bigger than the jighead goes underneath the marabou and behind the tie-in point. It creates a pair of voids in the veil of marabou and causes a little water hydraulic action on a straight line retrieve.

    Clay, HP doesn't necessarily transform into "speed". A prop setup will pull a jet backwards easily, and will thrust the boat forward WITH CONTROL at much slower RPM's, even while pushing a heavier load. Once you are up and running the jet pump will feed on the momentum of an already moving boat, like a tail-wind..... So being able to outrun a 20hp prop with a 30jet really doesn't indicate that there is less than a 10hp loss with the jet.

    I have one here with a POS open bow boat on it. If you'll find a home for the boat (no title-abandoned) after I snatch the motor and controls off of it I can sell the trailer very VERY reasonable. I'll post up pics tomorrow.

    You loose about 20hp on a well tuned jet pump. More if your shimming is a bit loose. Being able to swap back and forth between jet pump/ prop requires a jackplate to tune the engine height along with the swap. Whenever I start to think about THE BEST all around boat (river/lake/ect.) I always end up at a 1648 mod-V jon with a 20hp prop outboard.

    Just got in off the water and the cold snap hasn't hurt the bite at all. Quite a few more short fish to wade thru, but that's probably just a result of the weekend fishing pressure. Jerkbaits and slipping a grub down the chunky banks will keep you busy for sure.

    Not anymore, Brother.... My new KRWLR rods are gonna list upwards to 7 Benjamin's, and if you ain't got one.... then you ain't doing it right, and obviously will not have the proper degree of success. This ain't just slingin' worms into shady spots, ya know.

    Good point there, Ness. For once I'm glad to be older than the internet. It HAS to be insanely overwhelming for beginning tyers. Good Lord! Lechier (sp?) book is good, deals with good techniques of tying that are used in ALL patterns.

    Ya reckon there is anything about the (soon to be) highly regarded technique of "night crawler'n" that needs to be resurrected? Somebody had better jump on that before some 7 y/o kid makes BANK! ($$$$$) I'm seeing designer rod blanks and some fresh new science in the worm farm industry, on the horizon. Y'all just remember that you heard it from ME first!

    I've been tearing up the slabs consistently over the last week, but I found it considerably tougher today. Lots of half-hearted bites that I couldn't connect with and fewer bites altogether. Moving out a bit deeper didn't help at all, the best bite for me was still just off the chunky banks. I managed a limit of 10 1/2-11"ers but it took 3 times longer to get'em today and required alot more concentration than it had earlier in the week. They just didn't want to bite, and that shifty cold breeze was a PIA. Good job on staying with'em!

    About 300.00 parts & labor. Whatever you do.....stay away from it with that can of starting fluid.

    Check your fuel quality, if it's good/fresh then you probably need to have the fuel system overhauled and the linkage and mixture settings reset.

    Good point, Champ. Why I feel compelled to give feedback on a subject like that is beyond me, cuz honestly IDGAS what anyones registration numbers look like, except my own. Call the DMV, don't ask a bunch of guys that have piddled around with boats all their life. Whoever answers the phone at the license bureau is sure to be a genuine boating professional/slash/legal advisor.
