I think I have actually floated part of that stretch before. It was a very beautiful river. Unfortunately, what keeps those parties away is the same downside for me. That is quite a drive to make for a Friday Saturday trip. I'm in Owasso, OK which is just north of Tulsa, so the closer the better.
This is turning into a challenge!
Well besides going in the middle of the week, which I agree would probably be better though I am trying to avoid it. What other river would you guys say then?
DaddyO,
Yeah, I've been to the UIR, it wasn't enjoyable because of the party crowd, ha and the water wasn't the most enjoyable either! I did consider weekdays, but some of the sponsors going, as well as myself, would have to take off work. So that ruined that option!
Hey I am considering using a kayak for a float this weekend so I can have more independence on the water, instead of a canoe as always. But I am curious, how hard is it to fly fish from a kayak? It has been quite awhile since I've even kayaked period as well. I've seen all the sweet kayaks and mods people have on here so I am debating trying it out.
Hey I am considering taking my youth group on a float on the last weekend in June and I am considering the Elk River for our destination. I am curious though, how big of a "party" river is it? I have floated part of the Elk before but I don't remember much in that respect. What I do remember was the cool crystal clear waters and clean campgrounds.
There are other rivers closer and stuff, but I'm trying to get some of the details figured out. I'm hoping to make it tithe river this weekend to check it out, but still looking for any advice and such.
I dont want to find my rods all bent outta shape, that'll suck. Do you think certain conditions make it worse? Like humidity or heat? Like leaving it in an oven-like car for a couple days.
I was looking at some of my rods the other day as they were leaning against a wall in the garage. And it made me curious, do any rods have any memory that they may retain that shape of leaning against the wall? I am assuming no, but I don't think I would like to ruin a rod finding out.
Excellent video. One question, how do you decide how many beads you are putting on the articulation point? I've seen some with just one and some with three like this one.
And I assume the opposing hook points is just to help with hook ups?
I am curious though, for those of you who have targeted stripers what are you using to catch them? And when you guys were actually targeting them did you fish up by Marval and above or below Marval?
I had a really slow day as well. I got to Watts about 8:30, but didn't get fishing till about 9-9:30 because of some tipper problems. The water was exceptionally clear there as well, and it was also barely moving until they let some water out. Unfortunately, I brought no fish to hand, I had 5 or 6 but they all broke off. I don't know if the trout were rising up at the island but they definitely were smashing something on the surface, but I couldn't tell what it was. Usually when I go to the LIR I see people catching trout like every other cast, that's not how it was Saturday. It was a very slow morning.
Ah bummer, I was about to email you too to see if you wanted to join.
Alright, thanks for the advice. I never do well trying to match the hatch on the top, probably more so because I don't like buying flies and I haven't spent enough time to learn how to tie dry flies well enough. Oh well.
I realized yesterday I might have enough time this weekend to get down to the LIR! It has been awhile.
So just curious, what's hot and what's not?? I know I can always take some nymphs out but that wouldn't be my first choice, so just trying to get a heads up before I get out there. It's also to cold for any stripers to start running up the river isn't it?
I've never heard of bag worms either, but web worms I have, and it may lack of the certain tree in the area I live in now, but I have only seen a couple of them. They decimate trees though.
Its not a water snake, I've never seen one with so much red or grey. Because of both of those colors I'm gonna have to say it was a 'pet,' which if it is it could be anything. The grey and red reminds me of the Grey Banded Kingsnake.
The head also throws me off, it is a very long head which looks to be a constrictor because of that.
Nice. Yeah, sometimes it can just flip off. I think a large part has to do with the water coming in from Oolagah lake. I finally found where it comes in at as well, but they fish coming in have a drastic change in currents, temperatures, clarity, ect., so im still try to figure the whole body of water out. I haven't caught any bass larger than two pounds at the most but they're are a ton of panfish and I finally caught a White bass out of there as well.
