  1. I didn't even know there was more than 18th & Brooklyn. I'm even kinda suprised that it's still there after Arthur passed. Been a long time since I tried to avoid falling down on the greasy floor on the way to that heavenly window... I've been smokin' my own and buying the sauce at Harps. :-)
  2. Gates is real good, but second to Arthur Bryants IMO.
  3. This week is the time to learn more, ask questions, or comment; **Public Open Houses for Draft Master Plan Release** We are asking the public to drop in at any time during the following times and at the locations listed below. We will be showing a video run on 20 minute intervals; Corps personnel will also be available to answer questions during this time. 4. When you do the math, it becomes obvious that the pressure change sensed by a fish making only a 3 foot vertical movement is greater than the change it senses from the typical barometric swing. Also consider that the absorbtion of oxygen at the water/air interface decreases (slightly) with the falling atmospheric pressure often associated with a good bite. It ain't the barometer, it's what accompanies the pre-frontal pressure drop, mainly light, wind, and temperature. The deeper a fish is, the less the effect, hence the very noticeable effect of early spring fronts on shallow fish vs the far less perceptible change for late summer fronts and deep fish.
  5. Footnote from the SMP; "For large flood events, AmerenUE and the Corps have a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), developed in accordance with Article 40 of the existing license (see 15 FERC ¶ 62,038 (1981)), that coordinates operations of the projects in the river basin with stages on the Osage and Missouri rivers. Under the MOA, AmerenUE adjusts flows from the Osage Project to help alleviate downstream flooding on the Osage and Missouri rivers. Article 305 of this license requires AmerenUE to continue operating the Osage Project during flood conditions in accordance with the MOA, as modified herein."
  6. At 5AM, there was a foot of water over 71 between the rest area entance & exit. In 28 years here I've never seen that.
  7. Gate attendant and maintenance contracts are awarded to the qualified low bidder at FedBizOpps; https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=agency&mode=form&id=63dd2680762c21c611c41c2499b507c5&tab=offices&tabmode=form&tabid=f70a7f8db2af9d9959199f9edbb5c4c2&subtab=notices&subtabmode=list There are several contracts currently bidding, so they're not completely out of money. I know two couples that have done it for years, and they seem to like it.
  8. Correction; The BS-3 plan does have a cost from SWPA, but it was the least-cost option of all the plans considered. The cost will be entirely to the Feds (only appropriate since they initiated the Act) with the exception of costs incurred by the "non-federal sponsor" (AGFC) to relocate picnic tables and such. The short (and extremely boring) version of the SWPA report can be read at; http://www.swpa.gov/pdfs/WRMF_SWPA_FinalDeterminationReport.pdf There's a long version, but at 497 pages and 63MB, I'm not inclined to link it. :-) The far more readable story is in the USACE Environmental Impact Study found at; http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/Portals/50/docs/planningandenvironmental/a_REVISED_WRMF_FEIS_010609.pdf The only interest I have here is in what I can learn from the efforts invested in the various studies and research (and there's volumes more of it than I posted). That said, I believe it wise to invest a bit of due diligence investigating the tremendous effort involved in this project intended to provide a better fishery.
  9. No doubt about that, but there were many options considered to improve habitat in all 5 (actually 6) tailwaters, raised levels/minimum flow was just one of them.
  10. It's my understanding that the BS-3 plan was selected at BS largely because there wouldn't need to be any reparations to SWPA, unlike at Beaver, TR, and Greers (which were studied but not included in the mitigation effort for that reason). I'll dig up the data again when I get home from work.
  11. That started my day off right, thanks Quill!
  12. Epitaph of a hypochondriac; "I told you I was sick!" Lyme's nothing to mess with, good health soon F&F.
  13. There was definitely more to the story, but nothing that would improve your opinion of the shooter. Added (Just to be clear, my opinion's the same as yours).
  14. Minor correction, he went to Sulphur Springs. Years ago, the BV Chief xfrd to Cave Springs, but he was one of the good ones.
  15. Absolutely! And since it relieves constipation (immediately, and with prejudice) there's no better place for it.
  16. My fishing buddy tells a second hand story of a guy that got invited to bring his harmonica to a remote cabin on an unnamed OK stream. Who showed up but JJ and Eric... they all jammed on the porch till the wee hours. What a hoot that would have been!
  17. "Okie" playing now, "Really" on deck. I saw him in KC in ('77?) another century, he sat in a straight chair slidin' and singin' by himself the whole show. Great time. I raise my glass...
  18. There was a commercial fishing map made from the COE book, the lake was in yellow, on 5-6 waterproof foldout pages. Don't remember the trade name.
  19. Just the same ones that USGS showed pre-impoundment. That's really what it is, an enlarged, black & white, pre-impoundment USGS topo, with a few minor edits like 12 bridge, the dam, etc. I spent several winter days with a 100' remote temp probe chasing the springs out of curiousity. I learned that most of the springs located in 40 FOW or less were still active, but most of those deeper showed no evidence of thermal advantage. Stands to reason, since springs in this area are all gravity drains from higher elevation recharges, so simple hydraulic head math applies. The ones that showed with the temp probe were also very visible on sonar with fish present. Monte Ne and the one in the middle of Coose were particularly fishy, as well as some others you'll have to find for yourself. :-)
  20. I really, really enjoyed that. Thank you, and good luck!
  21. I used to keep one in my box for airing up 'crawlers, worked way better than those squeeze bottles because the smaller puncture didn't let the air leak out as bad. Kept a tiny cork on it so as not to accidentally stick it in me. Got tired of having to explain it when someone saw it though.
  22. It's largely the same, only huge. I saw one taped together once, it covered a big wall. I used highlighters to give different colors to the 1070-1120 intervals. Learned a lot about the lake in doing it, and it was hugely handy to identify similar spots when you found a pattern.
  23. Then the nice old geezer in the next slip down comes down for a late night excursion cause he can't sleep, sets it off and goes into cardiac arrest, falls in and drowns.
