I know. They normally generate pretty heavy during the week in the winter, but not this year. Do you know what the bottom of the conservation pool is by chance?

Be sure and get a moderate, medium, or something in a similar action, rod and one of the lines designed for beginners. This will make casting easier and allow you to develop good habits. Too many people try to start with a fast rod and special line and end up with bad habits that are hard to correct. There's a very good line priced right that even has a bump at the point you should have at the reel in order to have the right amount of line out for casting.

That is nothing more than the latest attempt to lessen the value of the amendments. Now they want to say it was only to protect slavery, but the problem is slavery was legal and any rebellions would have been put down by the army. Do you think some land owner could have put down a rebellion with a musket? Maybe we should start one about Dred Scott and the 14th? There is no doubt it muddies the immigration problem extensively. Do you want to look at statistics about how many legal gun owners are involved in homicides? If the number is extremely low then more laws aren't likely to make any difference. On the other hand if mental illness is not addressed, and it is central to mass homicides, then maybe that is where the emphasis should be applied. If guns are confiscated and no one but LEO's have them, will you feel safer? F&F you're are talking laws and they can be changed. The only question might be if an individual can be deprived of the amendment privilege and the answer is yes they can under certain circumstances. Criminals are routinely deprived of them if they constitute a perceived risk to the general population. There is no reason a psychiatrist can't be allowed to alert authorities about an individual who is a threat and be protected from a lawsuit.. If some sort of license was implemented and it replaced recording what weapons were possessed the average gun owner would probably except it. JD I have to chuckle over your prairie dog shoot with an AR15. I've hunted them and that wouldn't be the weapon of choice. Then there are drugs like heroin, etc that cause some deaths, maybe we should eliminate them. If we eliminate dangerous drugs only outlaws will have them. Of course we have and they are the only ones with them. What about alcohol, why not eliminate it? It causes about as many traffic deaths as guns do homicides?

There isn't much water. In spite of the cold weather TR doesn't seem to be generating much and that hurts the fishing. For reference, you can walk to the rockpile from the west side. Swan is down to inches deep at the bluff.

Not buying that Jack. The amendment was one of the first and was aimed at the British experience. The militia was thought necessary because of revolution experience, which was fought primarily with militias finance by wealthy landowners. While they had experienced some uprisings they weren't a threat at that time.

Well first off not everyone is required to have a Hunter Safety card, not to mention that criminal records of minors are generally sealed. Why not a license to buy? No list of weapons or how many, but a serious effort to keep any information current so that a seller can enter a number and get a yes or no and seize. Put some serious time on misuse. Cross reference spouses, children, siblings etc.with a list generated medical and law enforcement.

One could say that is an asinine opinion Justin. Yes we have laws and we know it works with some while it doesn't with others. But when you're talking about people who have mental problems it gets harder to apply the fear of punishment, add in a desire to commit suicide and laws moral or legal become useless. We know some criminals will because they do. If guns could be realistically controlled to prevent crime it would be a different debate, but they can't. Ironically we have a government screaming for more control that happens to have fed assault weapons into Mexico, and some have already come back to bite us.

The perpetrators at Columbine carried shotguns also. Their first choice was to use explosives and they experimented with them. Had they not had access to guns they may have had the patience to get working bombs. It's all about the mental state, it's all about the mental state, etc, etc etc.

The Osage Fork is nearby and it's friendly to small crafts also. There are some fords that can be reached by going south of old 66. You could paddle upstream from them. You should be able to find them and Osage Fork accesses on the internet. Be careful with the 10' jon, I've had a lot of experience with one and they can be tippy if you aren't cautious. I would be careful running shoals in one if y'all aren't real small. It's also a good idea to run with the bow pointed upstream in order to get better control.

It's hard to not criticize the father, yes he died, but so did two young boys who depended on his maturity. There is something of a conflict in this and I can't ignore the fate he handed the boys.

I hate to be too critical Mikey, but a tree doesn't make much of a backstop.

The channel runs through there and you'll be alright with caution. The channel there is across the lake from the RR ramp and it the turns to mid channel after it clears the bridge. It is to low to run to the dam, I suspect it starts getting pretty shallow about Silver Creek. Swan is approaching a trickle, to give you an idea.

I still think they should be responsible enough to address the common denominator of the recent attacks, mental illness. Common sense, and it should because none will be up for reelection for at least 2 years, should tell them that given the fact the so called assault weapons were only used in two of the attacks, but that all the assassins were under a psychiatrist care, or so it has been reported, that is where the attention should be. Unfortunately they just follow the media lead that has people looking past the real cause and effect.

I'm surprised he had no emergency items. He was involved with the Scouts and their motto is be prepared. I have a WP bag that Ive carried on floats for years, probably close to 20 now, that has first aid, wraps, space blanket, matches and a fire starter. I take it even when I'm local because you can't count on anything being as it should be.

I agree patfish. The father was no amateur, but broke all the rules.

There are lots of jobs in Branson, problem is they don't pay well and they aren't dependable 12 months of the year. You're better off in Springfield and it isn't that far to a lot of fishing.

It's a nice place to live and it will beat Tunas for being closer to shopping. I lived in the area for about 5 years and would have gone back if I could have.

What Should We Do About Mass Shootings?
Wayne SW/MO replied to jdmidwest's topic in New News and General Discussion
Justin the Patriot act hasn't been tested in the Supreme Court because it would hold up. The wire tapping section involves foreign nationals. The reason for Guantanamo is to keep our enemies from accessing the constitution. They still have to get a judge to approve searches, albeit they can do it the day after now if they show justification. I do agree with you about the media. They bring up Columbine and VA Tech every year on their anniversary, reminding all the nuts that they won;t be forgotten if they mimic. Many economist point out that economic depressions have recovered quicker when the government didn't intervene. I think careful and well thought out intervention can be positive, but automatic intervention to produce a false positive can do more harm than good. -
I'm still trying to figure out what it means. It sounds more like $ than conservation. Hydroelectric dams are pretty much done as a future source of renewable energy and the drought is only going to enforce that. As far as conservation goes, what can they add that isn't already being done? Outdoor recreation opportunities already exist to the point that it's hard to imagine what could be added without further negative impact. Economic opportunities sound negative to me. Are they going to impact the river in way that preserves or changes the river?

What Should We Do About Mass Shootings?

I don't think we gave up a lot of rights. It's true that the FBI did get some leeway on some things, but they are still required to justify them. I don't think keeping your shoes on is a right. If they're like most kids you probably have trouble getting them to keep their shoes on in the summer. -

What Should We Do About Mass Shootings?

They only thing I see that is an error in you post JD is that the Colt 1911 and 1911A1 weren't just used by the military they were developed for the military. The replaced the S&W revolver in 38 spec. I can also tell you that outside of qualifying, more rounds were and probably still, put through Colt 45's in competitive target shooting than anything else. During my time on an Air Force team I logged more than a 100K myself in competition and practice. It seems that if common sense were added to the equation it is obvious given the ratio of gun ownership to misuse that guns aren't the primary problem. If we were to rid the population of guns they would become just like drugs, and we all know how successful the eradication of them has been. There is an obvious alternative, imprisonment for criminals and solid control of mentally ill individuals with tendencies to kill. Given the extremely low number of mass killings and the long time spans between attacks there should be plenty of time to identify and act. It's hard for me to believe that with today's technology the authorities can't monitor potentially dangerous mental cases.
