  1. I got to go to Maine when I was a youngster, 50's, and we fished the Kennebec and some pond. I caght several smallies out of the river, but nothing in the pond, read lake, "Pond"? I reamenber a big pickeral following my lure and ettimg my day. I fished hard hoping for another one that would take, but it never happened. We did catch some white perch and to this day I have no idea what they were.
  2. Never to early to start them.
  3. Yeah winter and summer are more than months apart on Taney. I caught a bow in Beaver this spring, but I doubt there are any there now.
  4. I would go with Tryon's 100 Smallmouth Adventures. I realize he didn't catch the SW and the north, but the north is mostly made up of coloered streams more conducive to bait fishing and the SW isn't that hard to add in. He gives accesses and that is more important than just where a body of water is. The little pond and lakes are listed on the MDC Atlas. Higbee probably got most of his information from these sources.
  5. I'm somewhat ignorant of that lake, when you say channel are you talking about the area east of 65?
  6. They're a good lure, but all good lures have a problem. We all sometimes get so hung up on one lure that we fail to experiment and often avoid those slow days. If you like to throw hard baits then it's certanly one to consider starting with, but you should never rate a trip on how it alone produces.
  7. I doubt you can do that now, it's probably too late. Eventually you'll run into a normal spring run, I hope we all do, and then the shear numbers will have you hooked deep.
  8. Brian do you know anything about the Gen 3 Intermediate Clear?
  9. Amen to that! It's a disease without any known cure. Add this to a good spring and you have a recipe for infection.
  10. Ain't that the truth. Quail? They are on private land and now land owners can clear fence to fence economiclly. I see a big, make it huge, difference in establishing habitat to attract ducks and establishing habitat to import native animals back that have no chance in hell of becoming native again.
  11. You're not talking about the NW corner are you. That dirt track to the river is the old bridge approach and belongs to the state I believe.
  12. Well you can't just let dangerous animals roam wild.
  13. That's always fun IMO no matter how many come to hand.
  14. Yeah, been to Winsteads. I don't know it's still there but the one on the Plaza was there in the 50's. I have no idea how long Winsteads has been around. We don't have a lot of local available, unless we want to fight the mob of people. Of course one never knows. My grandson talk me into stopping at Backyard for one of the best. I agreed it was near the top. Two weeks later I decided to try it again, the burger was obviously old and reheated and ranked as one of the worst for me, so never been back.
  15. I know that they do Bear occasionally, but don't much else.
  16. GREAT information! Pretty much sums it up.
  17. Dana's is very good. You don't have to fight the strip to get to them either.
  18. Is that why I see bass boats down here all the time? I really haven't talked to anyone who is fishing Bull, but I'm sure they are. If I ever get enough power to get away from shore I'll head that way.
  19. Yes to the introduction. You're right about the snobbery also, our carp came from Germany, and so did the brown trout.
  20. I agree. A tip for guides is a reward. Servers often don't make much per hour and really depend on tips, but while I tip 99% of the time I've been know to skip it. Guides don't depend on tips, but it doesn't hurt to let them know you appreciate the up and beyond treatment you received, IMO.
  21. The concept that navigable has certainly changed since I was a kid. I still remember adults saying that navigable was determined by wether or not a stream could be depended up on to navigate from one area to another. As an example if I told some one to go up the James until they reached a stream flowing in from the right anytime of the year they would both be considered navigaible. This would hold true even if said stream would not float a craft because navigation is not water borne.
  22. The Nianguas would probably be close to you. I know the lower Gasconade isn't too far, but I don't know anything about it that far down. Tavern creek is mentioned sometimes and I don't think it is far.
  23. I think you're right rangerman, but lakes like it are very tough to fish because all of the fish holding structure is hidden. Tenkkiler and Eufaula in OK are good examples, one is similar to BS and Beaver in habitat and the other more like Truman/TR. They're close enough to one another to have the same weather, but one produces better because it;s easier to fish. There hundreds of bass lures out there, but it;s tough to get many of them past 15'.
  24. I fished Beaver the first time right after it filled and off and on since and it started tough and never changed. You're right about the lack of structure, but it isn't the stripers and that is why BS suffers the same way. I suspect Beaver is the same way, except lately it's been low. I don't know about the lower end, but the little 4-6" bass are so thick up here they're a nusiance. They grab everything that comes by, but fortunately they seldom get hooked.
