I suppose he means the shop. I don't know how much business they do now. Charley has skimmed off a lot of the high end business I would imagine.

The problem is I've had two occasions where a big fish was caught, held until someone went to the truck for a camera and then held for multiple pictures. One fish was in the net, but was held for probably 3 or 4 minutes out of the water. That's why I would like to see a rule where te fish can't be taken from the water. There is no need really. I guess I'm just always in the wrong place when it comes to herons. I've watched them for decades and never seen them take anything bigger than a 3 or 4" perch. I have no doubt they can take a trout in the small range, but I would imagine the eagles and osprey take a lot more. Taney is well stocked with eagles and they eat heartily.

I Will Say This For The Chiefs
Wayne SW/MO replied to Jerry Rapp's topic in General Angling Discussion
It's been a good year for the "new Chiefs" and it's gravy from here on out, win or lose. -
I just wouldn't take younger kids on new water. There are lots of stretches that are calm enough and without dangerous curves with strainers. The last time I did the Barlow to Gasconade Hills it was pretty benign. No big curves, shallow shoals and not all that fast. i'm sure there are others around. My GD did 64 to Corkery in her own kayak this summer. The water wasn't high and we watched her close at a couple of spots. She is 10, swims like a fish, and had dad and brothers 14 and 21 watching her.

Not much different than rabbit leech really. As for steelhead/salmon flies a lot of them will work. I've just about used all mine up from my time out west, but I won't retie any of them. The one salmon fly that has worked well and is probably worth tying is the Burlap fly that was popular in Michigan, maybe still is? The 2 flies in the center are simple rabbit wraps.

Have you seen a heron eat a trout? I was on a trip from 65 to Rockaway recently and we saw about 6 herons and 3 eagles. Eagles will no doubt eat a full sized trout, but I've never seen a heron pull up a fish that was very big. I doubt that herons eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner either. I started this thread about size, but I haven't necessarily noticed an overall shortage of fish.

Ranger To Build Aluminum Deep-V
Wayne SW/MO replied to moguy1973's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Probably a response to dealers needs of a complete line. There's no shortage of good deep V's. -
If I were going to put a family with 2 10 year old's in a canoe it would be nothing less than an Old Town Discovery 169 or a Guide 160. There are lots of used ones around and most important they are very stable and the kids can be kids in one.

You can buy fishing maps at Bass Pro. The James starts at point 9, more or less. Big Indian is a main channel tributary. If you want the James you want Aunts creek, Cape Fair, Flat creek, etc.
-
Why? It's put and take and everyone already pays the same. if you want bigger fish put some heavy restrictions on the above Fall creek zone. I would start with no fishing, AKA snagging, in the outlets. No fish can leave the water and all have to be released, if you want a picture take one of it in the net. Make it the safe zone given the fact they are most vulnerable there. I doubt you would get too many complaints because most people who fish there C&R, but it would eliminate battering the bigger fish from snags and long times out of the water. There is no reason on a P&T fishery to single out any particular method when you have as much water as Taney does. I don't see it personally and fishing of all kinds is important to the economy.

It's impossible to know I think. The fish they dumped it the river were nice fish and most were over 12". I pulled one out of the bunch, a hooked jaw big stripe male, that was 16". But before the truck arrived I watched a couple of scarred 8" fish, bows and not the little browns, working around the area. It's obvious that they are stocking smaller fish, but I don't know that they are intentionally stocking the really small ones. As far as how long will people come, well sadly for a long time, but not the same crowd that has been coming for decades. I intended to fish it a lot more this summer and was very disappointed. I've never seen it so consistently crowded, nor so many fishing from the bank, nor so many blatant violations. I realize you shouldn't have to wade, but when a group sets up chairs at the edge of the water and turns 3 or 4 kids loose to fish, some without bait or hook so they won't hurt themselves, it kills fly fishing. You used to be able to step into a space, fish, step out and move up or down a short distance and fish a new spot, but most of the time this summer you had to pack u a drive to find spot. That was the situation for 2/3rds of the day at least for me. Winter will be a new ball game, more crowded or not it won't come close to what summer is to me now.

Seasons are long, that's for sure. I don't see Baylor jumping in front, but there is no doubt that OSU has more clout in the polls. If Baylor continues at their present pace they will rise fast though. Strings of 60 and 70 point games don't happen often in football. You're still following the hype OTF, you make some assumptions that aren't holding up. Early season games aren't always that telling and trying to compare conferences from them and games within is useless. GA got be beat by the powerhouse Clemson, who went on to beat nobody and then got demolished by FSU, and then started squeaking by until it all caught up with them. Mizzou isn't in a place now where they can be comfortable. It's put up or shut up time and I don't mean that in a hateful way. They have T A&M who is formidable, but twice beaten. Lose to them and the bottom falls out in the polls. TN, no push over and one of those teams who "On a given Saturday" can be dangerous. SC, erratic and that makes them hard to play, at least for the coaches. If they get by them, and don't get ambushed by MS or KY, they have to beat the unbeatable AL. After all of that they have to leap frog OSU or FSU to get to OR, if OR doesn't get ambushed. My whole point is that it's useless look to far ahead, it always has been in college football and that's what makes it different from the pros. It doesn't really matter whether Mizzou gets their chance or not to make this a season to remember. You can look at January, but I'm going to look at Saturday.

Oh well. LOZ can probably survive without an influx of new bassers, at least as long as bikinis are legal and yachts float.
-
That's true if you stay within the hype, but Georgia isn't exactly a powerhouse apparently. The only decisive victory they have had is against SC. Florida is a better team no doubt, but you can't knock the Big 10 and the Big 12 teams for losses within and turn around and say that losses within the SEC count higher. I don't care what conference you play in when you rack up the scores Baylor has they deserve respect until something changes. South Carolina has been beaten by Georgia and TN, neither of which is a powerhouse. So to compare GA, SC, and FL to the Big 12 teams and make it decisive is fantasy at this point.

Lots of football to be played. FSU has one more game, Miami and I think they will be heavily favored. AL has LSU and Auburn, Auburn is a rivalry and probably the only team that might beat "Bama, but I doubt it. OR still has Stanford and UCLA who are ranked and OSU who is another of those big rivalry games that can bite you in the end. Ohio S is probably home free, but will have to rely on others to send them any higher and they could get edged by Baylor, if they go undefeated and Mizzou if Mizzou should beat 'Bama. Then there's the late season adjustment for overreach, Clemson for instance hasn't played anyone ranked except FSU and they got trounced, it could come back to bite FSU if they don't blow out Miami. "Bama and OR have the schedules that are holding up for the time being. Baylor and Mizzou suffer from having teams fall hard in the polls and they are helping, sort of ironic self destruction.
-
It got pretty high during the flood, but I don't know if it topped the gate? Just a wild guess because there are some sub 8" fish running around, much more than normal.
-
Through it all Mizzou is going to have to tack on a win or two against teams with fewer than 3 losses to get to number 2, unless they get some help against the teams in front of them. As far as the targeting rule i think it could be simple. If the first strike is from the helmet top striking the opposing players helmet it should be a penalty.

I Will Say This For The Chiefs
Wayne SW/MO replied to Jerry Rapp's topic in General Angling Discussion
They keep finding ways to win, but that's a thin ice game plan. But like Jerry said we can enjoy it for as long as it last. I wasn't sure we would have 7 victories, much less a 7-0 start. -
That seems to be the norm. I know the word was that the hatchery was said to have reduced the size in July and August to keep up with demand, but that was quite awhile ago. I posed that question to an employee and he said they were stocking regular size now. I have wondered if the pens got topped in the high water?

I agree F&F. The rule is a good one, but poorly thought out. It should be exactly what it was meant to be and judged within the context of what it was suppose to accomplish, stopping the practice of using the helmet as a battering ram against the helmet of another player. The NCAA has the power to educate the officials on what to call, including the review. I know they can't change the rule mid season, not possible, but the effective can be mitigated. I admire your enthusiasm OTF, but in college football there is no fairly likely. It's one weekend at a time.

You can also visit Larry's, it's on the road leaving the park, or Weaver's, just east of the upper park entrance, and visit with them. They are shops that always have a finger on the pulse.
-
Absolutely! Mizzou has a long way to go so it's probably best to savor the time. What I like about college ball is the uncertainty, frustrating yes, but fun on the long run. As far as the national championship, it will be up to the polls and right now AL, OR, OSU, and FSU are leading the pack. At this point it probably depends on who is standing undefeated at the end. Yes I know Mizzou is undefeated, but they haven't hit a game against a "healthy" opponent yet. The good thing for them is that they will most likely before the end of the season and get their chance to make a real statement.
-
There's no guarantee that the pollsters will agree with that. Their losses didn't do Mizzou any good and actually will hurt them in the polls. They are in good shape to play in the championship.

Sounds pretty good to me as written. I know from experience they are very effective in western waters with boulder strewn rapids. I'm not sure I agree with the term "boulder formed" however. I know that while many rivers in the NW have boulder strewn rapids, the boulders and rapids are a product of the geology, but from different action.
