  1. The stocking they made at Barclay were really nice fish, but I'm not sure what brought that about. The browns were really small and before the stocking I saw a lot of small fish. I turned back a 16" male, maybe he'll move to a secure location.
  2. Last Year. If you've followed college ball for decades you know that certain schools get a lift. Notre Dame is one of the tops in that category and I think most fans thought it would be AL and ND. OR and ND had the same record, OSU wasn't eligible so the tie between ND and OR would go to the Irish.
  3. The knot is the weak spot because of the pressure it puts on the line. That's why I suspect a 100% is impossible. Beyond that however there is always the sticky abrasion spot, unseen, just waiting to turn the big one loose. In my experience I see more breaks from that then from a knot like the Palomar. Loops have the problem of a lot of pressure at a 360 with a lot of rubbing and I generally see them break at the eye and not the knot. My connecting knot is very strong because it has a lot of cushion like the surgeons. Braid isn't all roses, unlike nylon, it generally breaks right at the rating and a 20/6 braid has the abrasion resistance of a moderate cost 6# mono.
  4. I wore the blue. In my time the F-105 was the workhorse and the F-104 the thoroughbred. They had a lot of combat plane configurations at that time and the gatling gun was just making it's appearance.
  5. I'm surprised at that. Lowe TIG welded their tubes. My Tracker V17 is welded. That's a cost cutting at the lowest level!
  6. That's true, even in the Big 12 , but even the draftees will come away with a lot of college and the others generally graduate and take away contacts that will serve them in the future. Football money pays for most, if not all, of the sports programs in colleges. The bonuses from bowl games help the major conferences build the facilities that attract the best talent. The mentality of the academic heads toward sport programs is what makes a major difference in the win loss for many schools. No it is not unique to the newly found SEC, it's common in the better competition across the country. That's one of reasons for the recent shifts, a lot of schools thought they weren't doing that great where they were at so why not get a bigger piece of a pie somewhere else?
  7. While I'm against cutting out all of the weak non-conference, I think there is merit in reduction to make a playoff more feasible. The reason I think the weak team games should remain are simply because it gives some benefits in both directions. It gives the FBS teams a chance to look at plays and players without a lot of risk. It gives the opponent a chance to fill the stadium and lets their players see how they really stack up individually. I also suspect it helps the weaker teams players improve through observation. I don't see any reason for games beyond a couple at the beginning however. It would be beneficial to some and harmful to others to play between the major conferences though. I'm simply speaking if it were regulated rather than random. The better teams now do seem to play a strong opponent, while others still linger.
  8. They are amateurs with the important job of getting a degree, at least that's the premise. I think one more game for 2 teams is enough to add. I still contend that the ranking should be done by about a 1/2 dozen computer programs. A program should be written using pre-determined standards. My reasoning would be to give some self adjustment in the ranking programs. If written right it should take into account opponent strength when the game is played while picking up on a teams rise or fall in strength through the season. Most important it would do away with the coaches poll and the writers poll. The coaches poll is obviously a joke because no major team coach has the time to evaluate the 35 or so teams eligible for the top 25. The writers are obviously going to be influenced by their audience, especially if they need to justify some earlier picks. I'm not saying they do a bad job now, but without a doubt there are always some questionable picks.
  9. I think 8 is too many for college and going beyond 4 just invites more upsets that shouldn't happen. It's not that they won't happen with 4 teams, but the odds are lessened. I would have preferred a playoff that included a representative from all the conference champions with no more than 1 loss. If a conference didn't have one then go to second place conference teams with, again, only one loss. OTF, Miami, really? They don't play the tough schedule you love and by Monday they will have been blown out in all likelihood. I suspect the end poll will look similar with OSU replacing Stanford, Baylor replacing Miami. , then Stanford, (maybe if they make a showing against OR) It's hard to say with the last ones. Sometimes those conferences get a push and sometimes they don't, but irregardless I think Louisville takes the spot if the win out. Don't forget Notre Dame, they have 2 losses, but they get a lot of support in the polls.
  10. From what I understand the playoff will be limited to 4 teams and 2 games for a pair of them. Personally I like the thought because over the decades there have been questionable rankings at the end of the regular season. When teams are very close the nod has often gone to the more populated area teams and clearly reflected bias at times. A team may get moved into a 3rd or 4th position now, but they can still have their day.
  11. I never like the kink in the triple surgeons.
  12. Have you checked to see if any of the USGS topos are before the dams, or still available in older printings?
  13. The speed spinner has been around since at least the 50's at Bennett. It is a gold blade set over the barrel of a barrel swivel snap and a split ring to keep it there. A brown wooly was the fly. It was very effective and I know the store still sells them, but I have no idea if they still work. hatchery fish have an affinity for bright and flashy and it's sometimes hard to separate whether a lure or fly is effective or just attractive to fresh fish? The old Hildebrand spinner for fly rods was a killer for crappie, small bass and perch.
  14. I wish I knew how to make video's. I could show you a knot that holds great and is so fast to tie you barely have time to spit on it before you pull it up.
  15. But it wouldn't. The last time they met in '08 they weren't in the game, today with Mauk, a toss up, with Franklin healthy, Mizzou no doubt. But that is college ball and whats interesting. There is always long ups and downs and if you aren't happy today, next year, maybe 5 years, but if you follow a perennial they will be back. According to the web Spurrier didn't plan on playing Shaw, but Shaw convinced him he was ready. I think that was Mizzou's downfall most likely. They probably didn't expect him to play either and didn't practice for his plays. I don't know why Pinkel would want to give anyone a heads up on Franklin, he should just keep saying maybe. He shouldn't just let the opposing team figure out who they want to practice for. I guarantee you it isn't just a skill difference the opposition has to worry about, but a set of plays that only Franklin can run. I doubt they will plan his reentry, at least for now.
  16. I would never have thought the number would be that low. The NFL is full of teams that can beat you on a given Sunday, but if the Chiefs could get a stronger offensive showing and let the defense get more rest they will be tough. The question is where is Smiths seemingly inconsistency coming from? It's easy blame him for all of it, but the reality is that many of a QB's throws are to a spot and it's up to the back to get there at the right time. I'm not defending or blaming, just point out that probably only the coaches really know.
  17. That's what I'm saying! For every stat there's a counter stat.
  18. It doesn't have any bearing, at least not until you start making it so. Your idea that except for the ACC and SEC there is no teams worthy of any consideration. You brought up the Baylor's preseason was weak and then you try to say it doesn't matter for an SEC team because they have this tough schedule in conference. The problem is history does matter and there has always been an ebb and flow in the successor teams. The SEC is on a ride for the time being, but who knows how long it will last. I know y'all want to say that the teams that are down are only down because of the conference competition, but that's true in college football in all conferences. F&F you surely don't believe that teams that are average overall in one conference suddenly improve because you think the competition is better? It all comes back to that magical mix, the one that comes more often for some teams then for others. And of course the coach, some coaches are consistent where ever they go and that makes a big difference. I just hope its AL and ,----probably FSU, but Oregon is good also, but they have looked unbeatable in the past and lost a game. FSU should blow Miami away. Miami's close games are with FBS schools with so-so records. Fsu has shut down everyone but Boston and racked up impressive totals and they don't have anyone in front of them that should beat them or even threaten. can't overlook Baylor though. Most sites give them the toughest schedule in the coming weeks and if they pull through it, it will impress and get them points. OSU is still there, but they don't have the schedule, except for MI and i doubt that will be enough to get them past the aforementioned, if the pack is all undefeated. The other side of the debate is that it's rare to have more than 2 undefeated and even that isn't common. Only one left standing undefeated isn't unusual. There's a good chance that the SEC will get another NC, but they'll have to play for it despite the fact some think it a formality.
  19. I use a leader on braid with exceptions I posted earlier. I don't use it for stealth however. My reason is that it saves the braid, which will last almost indefinitely and as a weak link. I can use a strong braid to gain some bulk for abrasion resistance and shock breakage resistance.
  20. You do realize that Missouri had a losing record in the Big 12 and that Texas A & M barely broke over the 500 mark? In your comparison methods wouldn't their success in the SEC speak negatively of the conference?
  21. About how far was that float fishslayer? I had a True Temper steel rod when I was younger. They were fairly common and there was another steel rod, can't remember the brand, that was square and I believe they were solid.
  22. If only you had something to back that up. Lets see, Missouri played 5-3 Toledo of the Mid America conference and Arkansas state 3-4, Sun Belt conference and of course Murray State. Baylor played 6-2 of the Mid America conference and 4-4 LA- Monroe of the Sun Belt conference and Wofford. So your point that Baylor played a soft schedule in the pre conference is sort of lost in the smoke. The idea that the SEC is all powerful is kind of lost in the smoke also because of their size and bowl record, but they have more chances. They are a strong conference, but it is still hard to judge another conference because a couple of teams lose opening games. Missouri never ran over the Big 12 as I recall. As far as your statement that the ACC was the only other good conference, you would have to burn the woods and sift the ashes to try and prove that theory. If you want to get technical about it, Alabama's championship over LSU never should have happened. Two try's to beat a team and then you're crowned the National champion and played one decent team, although steeped in controversy, outside the conference? Give me a break. best of two or what? Alabama never should have been in that game.

    Chiefs

Yeah and that is getting a little worrisome. That's not a trait as far as I can tell, but it is for the present. Bowe did make a good catch on a ball about 12" off of the turf.
  24. I use braid directly when fishing jerk baits in the fall. Braid gives you an indication of a strike because it flots and because of the sensitivity. I've caught a lot of bass reacting to a small tic in the line where it enters the water. I also use it for topwaters. My reason for that is besides floating, which gives good contact with the lure, I can generally wrestle a sammie out of a sycamore.
  25. They probably have lost any chance to play in the big game because there is a good chance that there will be some undefeated teams at the end. If they win out and meet AL they will end up in the top 10, but if they drop 1 or 2 they will likely fall out. There are just too many teams that have passed their rough patches. Ironically the big 12 will likely help them because there are several one loss teams in it, but they have to meet and Baylor has the roughest schedule left according to the stats.
