Old Steam Engine Exposed By Drought On The Gasconade.
strangercreek replied to UnCivE's topic in General Angling Discussion
Here is a map of all the shipwrecks between Jeff City and KC. The map is turned on its side. (someone mentioned riverboats in this thread). http://www.riverboatdaves.com/Maps/Mo_River/steamboatwrecks_missouririver1.jpg -
http://unaccomplishedangler.com/2012/06/somethins-fishy-in-adpharmville/ When I saw the commercial I thought maybe they were centerpin reels, but now I realize there are fly lines on those rigs.

It is awesome to think that such a good population of large fish are still in the Mississippi and Missouri. Nice fat-cat!!

Tell your boss to dial 1 800 eat sh1t (and that any moron can run a successful business by being unethical and taking advantage of people) I have had corporate nightmare jobs that had the same characteristics, luckily I moved on, otherwise I would probably be in jail. -

Looking For A Fly Box Like This
strangercreek replied to Jdecoudres's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
I asked a fly shop in Lawrence KS if they would sell theirs when they were doing some rearranging. They told me umpqua only gives them retailers supposedly. It was that exact box as well. That info might be incorrect. I would call Umpqua. I'll bet its expensive. I would think some plexiglass or acrylic and a fine blade on a band saw with some clear epoxy or silicone, you could build it. -
Much As It Pains Me, On Barbless I Stand Corrected...
strangercreek replied to Bamboozle's topic in Crane Creek
I remember taking my fly rod out of the truck in the parking lot of fall creek inn after fishing all day. The rod was still rigged, I reached in grabbed it, pulled it through the truck window (had it hanging out the rear slider), grabbed it just above the handle, then realized that it was attached to me....a size 16 barbed scud hook, through the hook keeper into my palm....ALL the way in. Luckily the fly was small enough to go through the hook keeper so that I could work it loose without having to work around the rod. I broke apart a shaving razor and used the blade to carefully cut the skin to remove it. It took a while to heal. I crush my my barbs now to, or most of the time (sometimes I forget). I can't imagine the bass boat guys getting a "big 'ol" treble hook in the face or neck. Those things are a nightmare when trying to unhook a fish. -
I fished with a guide on Mosquito Lagoon in Florida who used an all purpose lubricant called "Inox". Many people in that area swear by it.

I just read your piece on Common carp (thugs). Good article. I like chasing them but I agree with your viewpoints. I wonder what some areas I fish would look like without them. I could go for chasing native rough fish instead anyway (gar, etc, but it seems like the carp are always there). neat blog

Tfo Pro Series Rods On Sale For $75
strangercreek replied to strangercreek's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
I bought the last 6wt at Cabelas. They only ones I saw on Fly Shop Closeouts were 2 piece rods (I didn' t think the Pro series were ever made in a 2 piece model), I kind of wanted to go 4 piece for traveling. They have some really good deals on Greys stuff on that site to. -
I bought a Fish Pond San Juan Pack and a Fish Pond Flint Hills vest at the same time, never used the vest or even took the tags off it, returned it and got a refund. The San Juan is good IMO, not to big, not to small, holds several of the flat Anglers Image fly boxes, gadgets, and I can wear it as a chest, sling, or waist pack (has adjustable straps). I use a couple of carabiners for hemos, nippers, and sometimes even carry net with the magnetic release. I can't see myself going back to a vest. I've also used it to carry a small tackle box when spin fishing at a farm pond. 59 bucks and it seems to be built to last forever. I like Fishpond's stuff. I like how they named a few of their items after Kansas (Flint Hills, Deep Creek, which is a creek out by Manhattan, Blue River which is a river out by Manhattan).

Starting Thursday, Cabelas (the one is Kansas City anyway) is having a sale on the previous model Pro Series TFO fly rods for $75. I talked to the fly shop and they said most of them will be 5-6 wts, not sure if they will have anything else.

What area of the Wakarusa were you wading? -
Has anyone else seen this company? I have run into web advertisements and they have alot of items on their website marked for "launch" pricing, really cheap, just wondering if their stuff is any good. www.alekasports.com

Attacked At Bass Pro Shops!
strangercreek replied to Stoneroller's topic in General Angling Discussion
I would have asked him to step outside, or at least asked him why HE wasn't man enough to have a real profession to support HIS family. -
I have a 1985 copy of Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri (Chuck Tryon). I purchased it on Amazon, funny it has labeling from the Kansas City public library (hopefully it was sold). I have been through the book and really don't use it for any reference so.... I would like to pass it on to someone who will use it. Even better would be a trade for any books about stream fishing in the Ozarks, but not necessary. If you don't have a book to trade, I would just want to be compensated for shipping. Thanks Jason

Attacked At Bass Pro Shops!
strangercreek replied to Stoneroller's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have REALLY been wanting to do this: the next time I am approached I am going to pull some trinket or some misc item out of my pocket and put on a thick, major sales pitch to them and not give up, follow them around, work them until they are just exhausted or even try to have me thrown out of the store....then return and try it again (when I have some spare time). I thought acting like I was selling life insurance would be a good way to do it (there is nothing wrong with that, it would just be a good portrayal) This is what I do to telemarketers and they are sometimes speachless..... -
Here are my Simms L2s after being resoled. It was $49.50 as KC Shoe and boot repair, that included tax. They don't have streamtread or aquastealth, but they have two vibram designs to choose from. I went with the multidirectional tread as opposed to straight lugs. I have had this shop do repairs before and they do great work, reasonable prices as well.
-
LOL, they can be a little unnerving, especially the mirror carp (they look like a carp with warts) I also like the whole redfish/gamefish in saltwater, drum/trashfish everywhere else thing, that is funny.
-
It is interesting how we have some species snobbery in the US, like Stoneroller said, they are the #1 sportfish in Europe. Granted they are not native to the US, but they are here to stay. I look at Gar the same way. I see them as an absolutely amazing fish. I am also glad to see them restoring Alligator Gar in Mingo Wildlife refuge (since we are talking about "rough fish") Weren't carp originally introduced to the US as a food source?
-
Unfortunately that is the case. I was fishing at Squaw Creek a while back and a guy came up and started talking about the gar there. He said "when we catch them we make sure to wedge a stick in their mouths so they drown, dam pests". What a moron, probably doesn't have a clue about wildlife in general, probably just something an idiot parent or uncle passed down.
-
I just found a place in KC that will do them for 49.50 so I guess I will keep the simms (since I hardly ever wade anymore anyway) and donate the other pair to Project Healing Waters (along with a bunch of other stuff I am thinning out).
-
No longer for sale With all the felt ban stuff I was going to try to get my boots resoled but changed my mind. If someone fishes somewhere without a felt ban I have two pairs for sale, both in excellent condition. **Simms L2 wading boots, felt, Size 12, very little wear, I can send a pic of the soles. They've been used less than a dozen times. $130 new, selling for $65 (firm price as they are in almost perfect condition due to little use, I know someone would have to to use them somewhere other than MO) **Bass Pro Redhead Dogwood Canyon wader boots (the tan colored ones on their website). Size 7, felt isn't worn down at all. $20, again, perfect condition. They are still stiff, haven't really broken in.
