  1. Interesting. I thought I would share this. I sent an email to Jeremy Wade through the link on his website (I posted this earlier but somehow deleted it). I asked him about the episode with a fly rod and also told him about chasing gar and carp with fly gear and how they are seen by many as trash fish in the US. He actually sent me a reply, which I thought was cool. The wording actually sounds like him, so hopefully this is real. Here is the reply....also I thought this was interesting since on tonight's episode he is fly fishing. ------------------------------------------------------ Jason Many thanks for your mail and kind comments about the show. Fly fishing is actually something I'm getting more into. Watch out for one episode in particular of this season, and next week I go off on a film trip where this will play a very big part. Last year my casting wasn't as good as it could have been, but lately I've been out practicing my double haul with a 12 weight, and I'm looking forward to doing that on the water. And I have to say I'm very much in tune with (and respectful of) your attitude to fishing. There seems to be some amazing fishing in the US, but because it's not fashionable then it's largely neglected. A shame in a way, but at least it means that those like yourself who take the trouble to look for it, and who appreciate it, get to enjoy it without seeing too many other people. With all best wishes Jeremy The River Monsters book is now out in paperback. Published by Da Capo Press, price $16 ($18.50 Can) The UK edition is published by Swordfish/Orion, price £18.99 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  2. I actually like the first half of the show when he is going into different areas, talking to locals, hearing the fish stories etc. That is part of what makes it interesting to me. It reminds of me of growing up, there was guy that traveled the world then came to our school and did a couple hour slide show and talked about the places he had been, it was cool
  3. that was on my 5wt, it was a good fight, a memory for sure...went right to the start of the backing, but it was in a really marshy area (Squaw Creek NWR in NW MO). RIver Monsters is a good show, cool when something can draw a good audience with some actual content, instead of the "watching people who are famous for no reason" crap. I know alot of folks whose kids are really into it.....a good deal Jeremy Wade's facebook page (I think it is facebook) has had some info about when he was younger and described himself as an "obsessive carp fisherman".
  4. Yeah, I caught that episode to, I have just now become glued to that show. The more exotic locations are more interesting to me. The alligator gar stuff was interesting though. I would love to take one of those on fly gear some day, or any rod and reel for that matter.
  5. I was watching episodes leading up to the new episode last night. There was an episode called "pack of teeth" in which Jeremy Wade was looking for a killer fish in some river in Africa. He located and caught some type of tiger fish in packs and the footage showed a bunch of catches. He seemed to be switching gear around and there was a shot or two of him with a fly rod. I thought that was cool. I have seen him use big trolling reels and big spinning rigs, and occasionally a baitcaster, but that was the first time seeing fly fishing gear on that show. I thought it was worth mentioning
  6. like I was mentioning, I was just curious as I have seen signs that explicitly say guiding is not allowed, this was a few years ago (at the lower wire road access).....I just think the MDC rules should be followed....regardless of what some folks think of MDC, they are responsible for the well being of those areas that we all get to enjoy. However those signs weren't at the city park/ball fields area, so no foul there I guess. However I hope any guides are leaving some money in Crane, otherwise I would really disagree with doing business on one of the few isolated places left (I guess I'm going along with it in the aspect that anything like that could bring money to the local businesses)
  7. Just wondering if there will be any gravitation towards switch rods with all this high water. It seems like they would give you a chance to make a drift while staying near the bank (on the tailwaters). It might turn a high water fishing trip into more fun fishing time.
  8. LOL, not to mention you would have to be a real bad butt to saw through a rail with a hack saw....that is a serious chunk of steel!
  9. Not sure how I missed this article. I was wondering if someone would make a movie at some point. I wonder if it has actually come to pass. Pretty interesting since so much of this went on in the Taney county areas. http://bransontrilakesnews.com/entertainment/article_8da901da-e62e-11e0-8ca7-001cc4c002e0.html http://bearcreekproductions.com/Independent.html
  10. I've had BPS waders as well, and they worked well, never had any leaks, I finally just upgraded to the Simms because I got a deal on them (and wanted the front pocket)
  11. There are several online sources selling Simms Freestone waders (previous model) on closeout for $135-160 (originally $200). This is one of their lower line models, but not the lowest and they carry the Simms lifetime warranty. They are really true to fit as well. I own a pair in a large and I am 6' and have plenty of room in them. I would buy those before Cabelas or Bass Pro (Bass Pro does have some decent gear in my opinion but their waders don't carry a lifetime warranty). http://www.wyomingflyfishing.com/Simms-Freestone-Stockingfoot-Waders-Closeout-Sale-P6646C437.aspx http://www.flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=100326
  12. Getting opinions before getting my Simms L2 boots resoled. From what I am finding it looks like Aquastealth might be a little "stickier" than Vibram Streamtread, but just doesn't last as long, which I'm not worried about as I only wade fish a few times a year anymore. I am wondering if a cheap pair of lug sole boots with some boot chains would work as well. I looked at some Vibram boots and that rubber feels hard as a rock. I know that many rock climbers sole their shoes with Aquastealth.
  13. Not trying to start any arguments, just curious about this. I see where a fishing guide is showing Crane Creek as an option for a trip. I could swear that I have seen signs at the Lower WRA that prohibit guiding on MDC areas. I could be wrong but just wanting to know if anyone has the answer. Maybe the guide is working on a private stretch? I don't want to make assumptions, but again, it has me wondering....
  14. I have gotten to the point that I would rather chase carp, gar, drum, and buffalo (I have never gotten a buff to so much as even look at a fly but...) than fish for trout. I guess it is because I don't have to drive as far, and can make a day trip of it, which helps with a 1 year old at home. Anyone that lives near KC should take the trek up I29 to Squaw Creek NWR, Nodaway Valley Wildlife area, Bob Brown Conservation Area (these all have marshes with rough fish). You can only access the water from the road sides at Squaw Creek but you can wade or boat at Bob Brown and Nodaway. This is where I really cut my teeth on casting to carp, lots of long days, but it was always fun, fish or no fish. I love going to RR, Taney, and have even fished Roark a few times as well as the White and Norfork tailwater, but there is just something about fishing in these marsh areas that clicks with me, not to mentioned I don't think I've ever seen another fisherman, but would love to see the awareness of these areas grow. I did a fly casting demonstration at Squaw Creek for a kids day and one of the refuge staff was a fly fisherman also, so it was interesting to talk with him about taking carp on a fly in the refuge. I just wish I could go into the interior of the Squaw Creek Refuge (they have an airboat but I haven't been able to talk them into it yet It seems like the average fish are big also, 6-8lbs at times, with gar being smaller alot of the time in these areas. Bean Lake north of Weston is pretty fun as well. If the water is right you can float up into the Bean Lake Marsh and there are some real monsters up there, unfortunately there are asian carp as well, not sure how it will look after the 2011 floods. I have pulled a handful of nice crappie out of the brush piles in that lake also. It is usually pretty quite, no real accessible boat ramp and the whole lake is pretty shallow. Another spot if you are in the KC or surrounding area is to go out to the Milford Lake spillway (the Republican River). It is wadeable and rocky alot of the time and I have spent days casting to carp, gar, buffs (eyeroll, I can't fool them), wipers, and smallmouth (the smallie population is actually pretty healthy there). I just got a new 7wt that I can't wait to use this year. I haven't been real technical on fly selection. I usually just carry some black, white, and olive Wooly Buggers. I was able to take a carp of the top with a damsel fly pattern once as well (emphasis on "once")
  15. I am getting back into some conventional fishing gear lately (after cutting down my fly rod quiver to just a couple of nice rigs) and thought about getting a baitcaster. Last time I owned one it was a left hand retrieve because my spinning reels, fly reels, and Zebco 11 mini reels are all set up left hand retrieve and I am right handed. It seems really hard to find left handed baitcasters, especially the lower priced ones. Does anyone else have this issue? It seems like alot of people would like using them as left retrieve. Is there a reason why right hand retrieve works better over handed?
  16. It seems like there are alot of folks that would in no way shape or form have the mentality to deal with a deadly situation. How can a 2 day class at Bass Pro prepare you for that when Soldiers and Cops spend a career maintaining those skills? Of course there are some folks that have capabilities to effectively carry a gun, and more power to them. Just because it is legal doesn't make it a "free for all". The CC holders I know scare the hell out of me. I can't even fathom them in a confrontation with guns, holy crap. I own five firearms by the way, but I believe in personal responsibility (I am able to properly handle the ones I own for their intended purposes). It seems like you would need to constantly train and practice with your firearm (often) to keep confidence in your skills, as well as training in situations that might involve deadly force. What about the average person who can barely navigate daily life or operate a vehicle? Now they are packing, really scary. How many more idiots are going to discharge a firearm accidentally in public? Guns are way to serious to allow mistakes like that, no excuses, no exceptions, no second chances. CC also seems like a buzz right now, everyone is doing it and talking about it (geeez)
  17. I guess this is a good place for this. I took this hilarious pic at Roaring River a few years ago. The snakes expression makes me chuckle. Of course the "oh my god its a water moccasin" crowd was gathered 'round at that moment as well. I remember telling people to look at the eyes, as the pupils were round (not a viper, I thought that still holds true, but I'm not a herpetologist). It also doesn't look anything like a cottonmouth or copperhead IMO
  18. I am going to drop by this place next time I am in Omaha (next trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo, which is an awesome place by the way, with lots of new stuff this spring). This restaurant was on Diner Drive ins and Dives, a restaurant that is famous for Carp, check out this youtube clip from the show. I have landed a few, but never eaten one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bFCbifraN0
  19. I had a chance to cast one of those a while back (the Crosswater). I liked it. The only way I can describe it is that it is a "good strong" moderate fast action rod. I think all of Redington's stuff is good. I have been interested in the predator rods (better price than the sage bass rods, but higher than the heat rods); they have added some more models to that line up, they must be a decent seller. I will never Knock the BPS rods though, one of my favorites is my White River classic (one of only three rods I own now as I have cut down on my quiver), great stick
  20. "other materials", so what does this cover? Did they (whoever they is, as that is kind of the punchline in this whole thing) get an inventory of all materials and their properties for every single boot manufactures on the planet? LOL There has to be a reaction to anything negative to the environment, and it has to be public, and somebody has to get a plaque on their wall, I get that. It just kind of makes me laugh.
  21. I know the sides of my boots touch gravel EVERY TIME I WADE....therefore banning the felt soles wont stop the synthetics, mesh sides, and other man made materials from harboring invasives. How can the rest of the boot not be a threat when it is only millimeters away from the sole? The stream bottoms are not usually a perfectly hard surface, which means you sink down just a bit when taking steps.
  22. "in depth", you just made a pun,
  23. When Cozy Acres campground was still open, they would allow you to access the river on their property (I would just pay them a camping fee), but I see where there was a real estate auction for that place a while back. I asked about it on this forum and apparently nobody knows anything about it or didn't see my thread.
  24. Korkers is also the maker of the "Svelte" product I mentioned earlier in this thread (kind of looks like a rubber version of felt but they claim it is up to standards for being eco friendly) http://www.korkers.com/soles-accessories/soles-for-fishing/svelte.html I have another idea, how about putting condoms on your boots, the magnum size for some of us of course, and studded (that goes without saying). In all seriousness, Rocky Mountain Resole will resole with Vibram Streamtread for $65 plus shipping, sucks but a good alternative if you don't want to switch boots (I like my Simms L2s, the way they fit, lace, etc)
