I'm bringing a couple of smoked chickens and 3 salmon fillets. Someone needs to organize each dinner - Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I can cook the salmon Thursday night on the grill.

I've emailed some guys at MDC. Waiting for an answer. I think it's turned... fishing the last couple of days has been very good. Fish are very active.

Mullinville, Greensburg, Kansas Drove out last Wednesday with 2 nephews, Ryan and Levi with son in law Jimmy driving separately. Marsha's family is from the Mullinville area, both parents grew up there so I've been hunting out there since joining the family in the early 80's. Back then there were lots and lots of pheasant and decent quail numbers but both birds started to decline about 8-10 years ago. So I haven't been back to hunt... giving the birds a break. I guess other hunters have too, including locals, so I'm told. We're hunting on private ground, mostly belonging to a good friend of the family's who lives in Mullinville and works in Greensburg. His family farms, owns cattle and auctions on the side. I took my black lab out, Jackson. He's not trained but loves to retrieve. And he minds pretty well. He did good on dove and loves to "go". I could go into a lot of detail but will keep it short. Bird report - Quail: Excellent! Better than excellent... unbelievable. First day we saw 14 coveys. Good numbers of birds in the coveys too. They were everywhere... grass draws, milo stubble, tree belts. In one spot, close to milo, in the middle of a plum thicket, we s got a covey up with a huge number of birds. Putting our numbers together (because they went all different directions) our guess there were 60-80 birds. I've never seen anything like that... from my spot, I just stood and watched them blow out... never fired a shot. Pheasants: Good numbers but not everywhere. They were in milo stubble and crp but they had to be together. Fair in draws with sunflowers - but the quail were there too. Dog problems: It is super dry and dusty out here. No rain since early September. Dogs had a real hard time smelling anything - dead or alive. But they did point some birds and found some hard to find ones. Losing birds: I don't ever remember losing as many birds as we did. We bagged 30 pheasants for the trip (7 hunters, 3 days) and about the same number of quail but knocked down I bet 17 roosters we didn't find. Most weren't hit hard and ran. Some are what we called ghost birds because they'd flat disappear on us. Jimmy had one under his hands pinned to the ground- both of us on our knees in the grass and the bird somehow got away from us and was found 15 feet away. Crazy.

We have plenty of boats! As the date gets closer, we should try to figure out when everybody will arrive Thursday, where will we put in and who is fishing with whom.

MDC needs help from deer hunters for CWD testing firearms opening weekend - Nov. 12 and 13 Hunters harvesting deer during opening firearms weekend in 29 counties in northeast, central, and east-central Missouri must have deer tested for chronic wasting disease. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) needs help from deer hunters to find and limit the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD), a deadly illness for deer. MDC reminds deer hunters that the Wildlife Code of Missouri requires hunters who harvest deer during the opening weekend of the fall firearms deer season -- Nov. 12 and 13 -- in any of the 29 counties of the Department’s CWD Management Zone to present their deer for CWD tissue-sample collection on the day of harvest. Hunters must take their harvested deer to one of 75 MDC CWD sampling locations throughout the 29 counties. Sampling locations will be open Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. until at least 8 p.m. The 29 counties of the CWD Management Zone are: Adair, Boone, Callaway, Carroll, Chariton, Cole, Cooper, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Jefferson, Knox, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Putnam, Randolph, St. Charles, St. Louis, Schuyler, Scotland, Shelby, Sullivan, Warren, and Washington. Hunters can also present just the deer head with about six inches of neck attached. Deer must be presented by the hunter who harvested the animal. Hunters presenting bucks bound for taxidermy should inform MDC staff of that. While staff will not collect tissue samples, they will still will complete paperwork and inform hunters about participating taxidermists taking CWD tissue samples. While testing is mandatory during firearms opening weekend, MDC staff will be available to remove tissue samples from deer harvested in the CWD Management Zone throughout the season. Hunters can contact their regional Conservation Department office for voluntary testing information: Central Regional Office in Columbia at 573-815-7900, Northeast Regional Office in Kirksville at 660-785-2420, and St. Louis Regional Office in St. Charles at 636-441-4554. TIME-SAVING TIPS FOR HUNTERS Hunters can help reduce their wait times at a CWD sampling location by: Telechecking their deer before going to a sampling location, Having their completed permit information ready, Being prepared to locate their harvest location on a map, Positioning their deer in the vehicle so the head and neck are easily accessible for staff to take tissue samples, or Having the detached head with about 6 inches of neck attached bagged and ready.
