Perfect!

OK, first time on the Taneycomo Forum. And I know I can google or youtube it but I thought this would be fun. What's the best way to catch a needlenose gar? Nylon rope? There's a BIG school of them at the Narrows - big ones, small ones and real big ones!! They got to be eating trout. So we have 2 reasons to try to catch them!

Low DO on Taney this time of year is normal but the DO is really pretty good right now. On into Oct - Nov is when it gets noticeably bad. There are those on FB that always exaggerate the negative on Taney... we always see dead trout on the bottom, esp below Fall Creek where fish are gut hooked and/or mishandled. BTW - trout sink when they died. http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil/pages/data/plots/pics/trdo.jpg You see when the water is running, DO is high. But when it's not, it tanks. Again, normal. Just below the dam, the outlets keep the DO high, spreading the DO. The further down lake you go, the better the DO is. Sunlight, wind all add O2 to the water. At night is when you'll see the lowest levels. This will be the case through the fall season till Table Rock turns over. This cool spell helps and will show up hopefully in it turning earlier than normal... maybe as early ad mid November. But it's usually the first of December. The spring floods will hurt us as far as dumping debry into Table Rock. This stuff will eat up O2 and create problems for us, but no one knows how bad it will be. We saw really bad water in '15 and it caused fish kills in the hatchery and in the lake. The hatchery is better prepared for it this year since a new intake pipe has been installed bringing water from TR to the hatchery from a different level of the lake. But it won't help the lake itself. It's all a watch and see deal... there's nothing that can be done. It's a tailwater and we get the water the lake above gives us.

Talked to a guy yesterday that fishes out of Tucker Hollow on Bull Shoals. He said he had 24 keepers there last week (one day of fishing). Dragging crawlers. He said there's no one down there fishing...

There's a ton over in SE Kansas but the locals are afraid they'll move on before the first because of the cool weather and rain. But still, there should be birds from the north to replace them. Lots to eat there.

Then they shut the water off for a while today? Couldn't tell here at the dock. Was moving just a little all day. Now it's raining... -
I've pinned this topic because it's a common question. Anybody that wants to elaborate on the subject - the information will be here for anyone else to view. Thanks

Oh... Running 30 mw all day today. They're midging all over the lake in front of the dock this morning. Overcast. Should be a great day. -

I'm sure they're sitting on bedrock and the gravel is coming in on and around them. -

Tell me... are the boulders still there? Are they covered with gravel? -
There's a fine line... they changed the regs to allow for fly tying materials that are made of soft plastics but ultimately it's up to the agent. I'd say he's going to error on the side of the angler unless it's flagrant.

Milk Jug (if it's still there) is a tree/root wad. yes the Narrows is wider for sure.

Posted by @Brian Shaffer I started tying this pattern some time ago. To me it is all about the legs. Bill Skilton makes the legs. Ant / Beetle legs. I use the Reg size in black, brown, or green. Just yesterday I added the little yellow dot. Make sure to glue the top and bottom to hold the legs. I use Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. Recipe : Hook - sz 16 TMC 100SPBL Thread - black or brown or red 8/0 Body - cylinder foam in black or brown to match size of ants Legs - Skilton's Ant / Beetle legs, Reg size in black, brown or green Optional yellow dot - yellow foam sliced thin and glued to top View full article

Are you fishing it!?

First time I've been up lake since they fixed Powersite Dam and the water's been off. We boated by the crew pulling the last car out of the lake, or at least the last car that anyone has seen. There could be more but it's either in a deeper hole or covered with gravel, probably the former. First impression: The water is deeper than I thought it would be. Back when the lake was dropping below normal pool because the spill side of Powersite had broken sections of the gates (in the down position) letting the level of Taneycomo drop lower than normal, the water was much shallower at the Narrows. I liked it too! I still do, just can't wade it like I thought I would be able to. We ran the boat up on the shoals and dropped the anchor. Got out and started casting to deeper water. I tied on a #18 red Zebra but after a couple of casts I switched to a meaty scud... cause I just wanted to catch big trout! That's what normally happens - a scud does catch bigger trout. I set the float about 5-6 feet deep, fishing 3-4 feet of water, 6x tippet and a #12 gray scud tied on a 200R hook. It was also weighted - about 7 turns of .015 lead. There was slight current moving down lake and the wind blew just a little from 3 directions. I let the scud drag the bottom, switching it occasionally. The bite was mostly light, but had 2 or 3 rainbows take it and ran. I caught 4 real pretty, nice rainbows before I turned the video camera on. Then came the dinks... and one really nice rainbow. Didn't move at all - fishing the same spot. Saw a couple of trophies swim by too. Started at 9:20 and quit at 11:00 a.m.. I think I'll go back!

No generation on Taney this morning

I'm going wading in the morning, but not at the dam. Taking a boat to the Narrows first, then may be work our way up, or down from there. -
Published on Aug 2, 2017 Mid day trip on Taneycomo yesterday. Three units running and they're still really liking a light colored jig.
