Anybody still fly fishing the White?
snagged in outlet 3 replied to Russell Doughty's topic in White River
Water off on the Norfork and I fished Thursday to Saturday. Min flow on the Norfork is hardly noticeable. Low O2 so I didn't take it out of the water. -
You don't have to prove anything to me. I'm old enough to be past that. I have to email my pictures to myself so I can make them smaller files and then they will upload.

Just walked in from Mountain Home and the norfork was actually off. This one was right at 21 inches. They have low O2 levels right now so I didn't take it out of water. -
I am too!! I'm headed down today too. I have no boat but I can pay for gas.

Anybody still fly fishing the White?

I'm headed down today. I've been fishing it about a once a year since the min flow debacle was enacted. Honestly I've never hit it at dead low min flow since they rarely turn it off anymore. Pete -
As Kramer would say. That's some sweet action!

I've used it in 4, 6 and 10 pound for years with no issue. I guess I got lucky. What do you guys suggest as a replacement? -
Nice!! I'm headed down there Wednesday.

What kind of snake is this?
snagged in outlet 3 replied to snagged in outlet 3's topic in General Chat
When I do a search it looks as though they have photos of Fox snakes and Rat Snakes mixed together. When I first caught it I thought Rat. Not that the interweb could be wrong or anything -
Yep, we do it all the time on the Katy Trail. It's almost like they are mesmerized and want to know what it is.

I goggled many images and it looks like it's a fox snake. Never heard of them but it looks identical to several of the photos. BTW, he's down in the woods by Augusta Brewery. He was cool so I thought I would drop him a good spot if he ever wanted a beer. -
Found in my garage this morning. I'll take it down by the river and let it go today. After my daughter gets to see it. It's about a foot long. I think it's either a rat or fax snake.

So I headed to my third location in Glenwood Canyon itself, on the bike path at the Grizzly Creek access. I got there and it was pretty busy and there were a lot of people milling around. I worked the back water eddies with an egg and a worm behind the big boulders like I do at all of the places on The Colorado. I rolled two very large fish and both of them cart wheeled out into the heavy current and took off downstream not to be seen again. You can see the pictures of these nuts headed down stream into the canyon. The water in downtown is rated Class 3 but they would have to go through some Class 4-5 water before getting there. Keep in mind it's still in the 55 degree range.I got tired of the pocket fishing with the trees behind me in the water rushing by real fast so I took off for my last location of the day. My 4th spot in Kiwanis Park on the lower Roaring Fork hoping for some browns moving out of the Colorado getting ready to spawn. I get to Kwanis park and it's beautiful water with a nice flat that drops into a pool. I catch two cutthroats on my first two cast when a cop walks up behind me and tells me to hit the road. Apparently they were digging for evidence from a shooting over the weekend and they actually had divers in the river looking for the gun. I went down stream always underneath the bridge and got a couple more small cutthroats on dry flies and decided to head back to the bridge rough start of the day. I get to the bridge where I started my day and fish are rising everywhere and not just little cuts but nice rainbows too. I put on the adams but it's so windy and the glare so bad I can't see my fly. So I tie on a woolly booger which ended up being my best choice of the day. I immediately caught a large rainbow a small brown and then a bunch more rainbows. After a long day it was time to head out. I had one more hill to climb to get back up to the hwy. On my last day I walked 3.85 miles and climbed the equivalent of 29 flights of stairs according to my health app. Time to head home and next week to Arkansas. -

Day 3 I had 4 places I wanted to fish. 3 on the Colorado and one on the lower Roaring Fork. I hit the main Street bridge in New Castle off Hwy 70 early in the morningI had on the egg and warm and rolled a couple small fish and then fish started rising everywhere. They were small cutthroats and I caught a dozen or so on an Adams and then I left. You can literally catch small cutthroats all throughout the valley anytime you want on dries. I went to my second location only to find the department of transportation doing shoulder work and I couldn't pull off and park to fish. It was about a mile downstream of New Castle and very nice shoal and pool. -
It is one of the great mysteries of mankind. In the old days it seems like they would generate at night and turn it off during the day. That ended just prior to the Min flow debate and debacle.

The second day after lunch I drove to the Frying Pan and I made my way all the way up to the dam. I got stopped on the way up for speeding but the cop didn't give me a ticket. I love that water up there and I've caught some absolute pigs up there. I usually fish the flats below the toilet bowl which is at the base of the dam. I like to swing a bugger up there because most people use mysis shrimp and real small stuff. I rolled a big fish on my second cast and then was hung with moss the whole time. Fish were rising everywhere and I took the woolly booger off because of the moss only to get hung up with moss every drift with the dry fly. So I left and headed back down river. I thought the fish were taking blue wing olives up there and sure enough I found one in my hair on the way back down river. By the time I got down river to about the 5 mile marker and a place I've fished before it clouded up and gotten cold. I thought it might bring on some blue wings but I think it was just too cold. I did not catch a fish on the frying pan. I think that's my first skunk on that river. So at the end of the day I caught a bunch of nice ones and two dinks on the Colorado and rolled one fish on the frying pan. -
I did about 25 years ago and we did well. That's the best I got for ya.
