  1. If nothing else, pm me in the spring. You will get an occasional walleye on the jetties. I haven't got one yet on the flyrod though.
  2. You have what you need. Learn how to mend. You can only do this on the water. Go fishing!
  3. HighPlains, you should check out the jetties at Little Platte Park at Smithville. Good bank fishing for whites. No hybrids:angry2: The jetties were built to control bank erosion from southwest winds and boat traffic. Both Jetties have a few hundred yards of chunk rock and the whites are plenty close for flyrods - often right on the bank. They were still up a couple of weeks back before the cold snap. I've caught them into December on warmer days with south winds. PM me if you want to try on a warm day this winter. I've loaded up the freezer a bit this fall.
  4. Winds are howling out of the south making for good white bass fishing on north east facing points. 30 fish in 2.5 hours today all good size. Get out while the weather holds.
  5. Nice mess of fish. I love the Fall white fishing. Same pattern all over the state. It's on up at Smithville near KC too.
  6. My favorite fall pattern is shallow white bass. Really shallow. Once the water temp hits the mid 60s and until it drops out of the 50s, the whites get right up on the wind blown points and banks - following the wind blow shad schools. With the cool nights, the pattern is already starting. Its easy if you have a boat, but there are places to bank fish too. I bank fished for 90 minutes at Smithville this weekend and caught 15 whites. The patter will last through November most years. Good luck.
  7. No wind. Bluebird skies. But still the whites are already shallow at Smithville. The cool nights have started things early. Could be a good long white catchin Fall.
  8. Just pray the critter isn't deaf. Our boston terrier is 2 years old now and it took us 8 months to figure out she couldn't hear my commands. Only solution: another dog. She follows the hearing dog around. I still thing it was the wife's ploy to get two dogs. I love labs and they are easy to train compared to other breeds. Good luck Phil. I hope you have many years of faithful companionship. Should be fun on the lake.
  9. Absolutely use them. I tie all of my gnats without the herl wrapped, but instead with one or two strands along the shank (like a crackleback). I've just had better luck with the less bulky profile.
  10. I fish the Niangua from Bennett to Barclay every spring for a 3-4 day trip. About every 2 to 3 years we get into a few nice browns. Not trophies, but nice fish, and they come in bunches. 4 years ago, middle of the day in May with blue bird skies, our group caught two nice ones within 20 minutes just below NRO on rebel craws. One was 19 inches, the other 17. Two years ago, there was an overnight storm that blew out the river such that we couldnt fish it. Went to Barclay and threw around the canoe lagoon and caught 5 browns over 15 (none bigger than 17) in an hour. Caught on rebel craws and big woolies. I think there are more decent browns than most think, but they are savy. As for as trophy fish, I think it is more like musky fishing - the fish of 10,000 casts.
  11. would've been a good day for me. my fly casting is a perfect example of the "splat"
  12. I'd be interested in knowing how you do. I've never fished the Niangua in late summer but have had lots of success in late summer everywhere I've fished with foam terrestrials. Especially hoppers and stone fly imitators. Looking forward to the report. I'd hang a #14 pheasant tail off of the bend for insurance.
  13. Fellow OP'er here. Welcome.
  14. They'll work. I prefer skirts from old bass jigs because they are two tone and the right thickness. If the rubber band thickness is right, they'll do fine.
  15. Use a backpack with a drink holder on the side for your carryon. Slide the rod tube into the drinkholder on the side of the pack. Worked like a charm on my Yellowstone trip.
  16. That example is the equivalent of buying gas at a 5x premium because you like the station owner. It makes sense at a few cents more, but not at multiples like those in play with the feathers.
  17. Markets are efficient. Not enough feathers to go around = price hike. We have had many discussions on this board about how hard it is to make ends meet running a fly shop. I don't blame these guys for making a windfall profit on a fad. How many of us would pass up the opportunity to make 10x your normal margin given the opportunity?
  18. Livin the life . . .
  19. rookie mistake on the stringer. awesome story on the grass carp.
  20. Quote: "A real man does not worry about what people think about them in those depts., they think about what they can do with some of the women there." Quite right JD, quite right.
  21. i need to tie bigger scuds. glad to see you're out and about phil.
  22. Anyone have any experience/reviews to offer on this rod? I'm looking for a 3 weight.
  23. Thanks for the heads up. Question: The sale price doesn't appear on the link. Is it over?
  24. Since this is free, it is probably worth what you paid: get 1.5 and 2 inch tubes (walmart variety is fine). If you are starting from scratch, pick 3 different color types: dark (purple or blue), light (white - maybe with a chartreuse or pink tail) and transluscent (see-through with some glitter). This time of year, find some shallow rocky banks and do what Al said. One tip - get real small floats and set them 2 feet above the jig. When you reel (slowly) the jig will stay horizontal and will do so regardless of how fast or slow you retrieve. THis really helps during the spawn after a cold front but I do it almost always.
  25. Ill be there the weekend of May 19-21. We fish the Bennett access, NRO, to Barclay. Ill post a report before your trip.
