  1. You can keep native fish as long as you don't sell them if you have a fishing liscense and you catch them with a line and hook. Also if you use a throw net to or seine to get your fish and you want to keep game fish you need to get a collecting permit to be legal. Usually nobody cares if your just putting fish in a little aquarium.
  2. I'm doing a lot of research on that chemical plant and wow I had no idea!!!
  3. Stonerollers are really hard to keep in an aquarium, its hard to get them enough algae to eat. Plus they don't seem to take to the algae wafers or pellets. I've had good luck with smaller sunfish. Once they get big they tend to beat the crap out of each other. Very terriotorial fish. Madtoms do really well and always find something to eat in a native tank. Lids and lights are kind of expensive but just get the measurements and you can always find stuff online and usually for cheaper. Good luck with your tank.
  4. Man everytime I get on here I see pics of somebody else I know.
  5. Yeah but unless you know some landowners, which I hope to do its hard to get into the area where the rainbows live, usually south of Aurora.
  6. After a lot of research on the internet about the Spring River I'm thinking I'm going to sample a lot of places on the Spring and some of its tribs to see what kind of state the river is in with its fish populations and how impacted they are. The only studies that have been done have just been samples to see what is in the river and no stats have been done much on the River. Lots of bad things have happened in that watershed. The huge amount of pollution from mines around Joplin. It is actually one of the largest superfund sites in the nation. Also there was a dioxin spill in Verona. Heres a link about the cleanup and final report very interesting http://www.epa.gov/region7/cleanup/superfu...ex_facility.pdf
  7. Yeah the clydesdale commercial was really good. I enjoyed the Emerald Nuts and when they used every letter in Emerald Nuts I thought it was hilarious but my wife has never heard of Emerald Nuts and thought it was stupid.
  8. There's Trantham's on Chestnut Expressway that is open on the weekends. Also the Bass'n Shop or whatever it is know now in Nixa has live bait.
  9. I read Lilly's post about catching a yellow perch in Bull Shoals and looked into it a bit further. According to The Fishes of Missouri in the 30's the Missouri Fish Commission stocked several million yellow perch in Missouri's lakes and streams. My guess is that they have been around in a very small abundance since then.
  10. O.K. I should have made my statement more accurate. 90percent of the time if you open a rainbow in Tanyecomo all you will find are amphipods and isopods in thier belly. Yes all fish are opportunistic feeders and will prey on what is most available. I was wrong I hang my head in shame
  11. Yes on a stream that is correct even though the law is really gray and depending on the case it changes. The only thing I have heard of was a fence that was put over the Niangua and the canoe rentals had a fit and the fence was taken down
  12. Rainbows don't eat anything much bigger then scuds, and only the big big browns will eat 8 to 10 inch fish and then only if there is nothing else in the lake to eat.
  13. exactly and its also just knowledge of the difference between what a sucker and a smallmouth look like when you are on top of them.
  14. I'm thinking of the upper reaches of the Spring I remember seeing some data of our classes that we shocked some pickerel in the region between Aurora and Monett. We don't need to be messing with every fish to make it accessible to fisherman and stock every lake with every kind of fish. No offense but if bugs me everytime somebody wants to stock fish in every different lake. It takes so much more time and money to raise fish in captivity and release them then spend that money and time to improve spawning habitats and improve water quality. O.K. off my soap box.
  15. What time of the day are the bank fisherman catching the walleyes. Gonna try and make it up there Friday. Thanks a lot. Any place to rent a boat up there this time of year?
  16. A buddy of mine got stopped a few years ago on the James by an agent that was on the bank. Scared the crap out of him thought he was getting jumped by some locals. Yeah not much you can do with only one agent per county.
  17. Confusing since there are two Spring Rivers in southern Missouri. I am thinking the one that goes through Lawerence county. It is spring fed and even has some little trout in it. I have heard that there are pickerel in it but not enough to really target.
  18. Yeah is called Spring River Turf Farm. I didn't know how big it actually was but looking at satellite photos man the place is huge. Hopefully some land owners around the river will give me access as I don't think there are many public access sites to that river.
  19. Reading this and other posts have gotten me thinking about my Thesis for grad school. There is a sod farm near Mt. Vernon that takes a lot of water out of the Spring River and was thinking abot doing a study above and below and see how much this is influencing the Centrarchid population.
  20. Went over to Lake Springfield with some worms just messing around catching little bluegills and channel cats. Well about 1/2 hour later an old couple was leaving and asked if I wanted the rest of their shiners. I took them not really thinking I would use them as I didn't think anything of any size was in there this early. Well put a shiner on and within 10 seconds wham!! 2lb cat nice!! well 1/2 hour later I have four nice cats for dinner. (I know what your thinking what are you doing eating cats out of Lake Springfield, I only eat them once or twice a year) Plus an old oriental guy was leaving and has 4, 5-6 pounders and was using cut bluegills as bait. Nice little day of fishing.
  21. That is insane. Yeah I've heard of people getting killed from jumping carp. Maybe thats just an urban legend but a 30lb fish to the noggin while flying down the river, seems like that could happen.
  22. Hey I've met you a couple of times. Sucks your not with SMSU...MSU anymore. Just started grad school working with Beckman, but not planning on sticking around in Missouri. Never been a fan of the MDC seems like a big fraternity. I could go on but I'm not going to. I'm doing the Urban Streams gig that Parnell had and he's helping me out on it. Get ahold of me when Dodd comes back into town for the White Bass run this spring. Later
  23. Hey Ryan do you go to SM...MSU? Might have to hit the water some time.
  24. Thought I would put this here. Don't have squat to do tomorrow and was wondering someplace close to Springfield where the fish were biting. Can't make up my mind where to go. Don't have a boat either. Thanks
  25. quillbacks cool makes sense
