7 year old daughter wants to catch a trout.
Flysmallie replied to Flysmallie's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Thanks jOrOb. I looked at that place online. What a wonderful idea. I'll have to plan a trip to get her down there. I'm in Springfield, so it's not that far, just farther than I can make it this weekend. -
I have fly fished the trophy area and love it. But now my 7 year old daughter wants to catch a trout. Any recommendations on the best place to take her and what to use. She gets bored fairly easy unless there is some action. I had just considered taking her to the trophy area and using a zebra midge on her little spinning rod, but I don't want her to be in everyone's way, or get bored and start throwing rocks .

Thanks for the advice Kicknbass, I'm going to give it a try this year. I'd love to catch something unusual to show the girls.

Are you planning above or below Pomme de Terre? I don't really have any information, just wondering. Always wanted to try it. I have been as far as you can go up the river from Pomme de Terre in a bass boat, far enough to totally destroy a $500.00 prop. Always caught lots of fish up there. Let us know how it goes.

I'll give you 50 cents! I have no use fishing the waters I'm fishing, suprised nobody seemed even a little bit interested. Put it on ebay. Hope you're doing well and catching lots of fish. I may have to get some surf fishing info from you later, taking the clan of girls to Gulf Shores in June. Always wanted to try fishing from the beach, but have no idea what I'm doing.

Why do people have to be so rude. Couldn't he just take the time to show you the fly? It's not like he would all of a sudden stop catching fish. I am so annoyed by the attitude of these type of people. Just think of the values he was teaching his son. Add one more creep to the list of people that I am going to run into on the river.

I need someone to patch my canoe
Flysmallie replied to hank franklin's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
Most canoes are made of some type of plastic that is flexible. Fiberglass repairs are better used on substrates that are more rigid. When the canoe flexes the fiberglass will not and this causes it to pull waya from the repair or break and crack. Some epoxies are just as bad as fiberglass. I would suggest using products that are recommended for semi-flexible repair, much like what would be used to repair a felxible bumper on a car. If you are interested PM me and I can get you list together of what products you would need and what the approx. cost would be. -
First, I want to thank Phil for putting together one of the most successful forums that I have ever seen. And the information that I have gained, especially Trout info, has been very valuable. I grew up fishing for bass in farm ponds in Oklahoma. When I turned eight my dad bought me a float tube. I wasn't old enough to be paddling around by myself, so he tied a rope to me and pulled me behind his tube. He is either a really great guy, or he was really desperate to go fishing. I think he's just a great guy. My junior year we moved to Springfield. Not a lot of farm ponds, so dad bought a boat. Learned the lakes fairly well, started fishing tournaments, started placing in tournaments. Thought I had found my calling. About 6 years ago a buddy talked me into a float trip, never been in a canoe, thought it was a waste of time, boy was I wrong. Before I had a hard time enjoying fishing unless I was competing, now I have found the real reason. A couple of years later I was handed a fly rod, another big break through. My main target, smallmouth bass, the greatest creature on earth. I have been fortunate enough to fish in a lot of different places, mostly because my dad was willing to take me. The only time that I spend on the lake in a boat is with him, he still hasn't caught on to this river addiction that I have. Thanks again for everyone's posts, I know that I have learned a lot, and I will try and help when I can. _____________________________________________________________ If you can't laugh at yourself, you're just giving the job to someone else.

Going to need help on the troutcam Thursday
Flysmallie replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Angling Discussion Archives
I can see it!! It's been real spotty for me. Sometimes I could see it and somtimes I couldn't. Wish I couldn't see it today, too nice to be stuck behind this desk. Ronnie. -
We were in Beaver Creek. We waded in several different spots. I'm not real sure what the name of the area we were in is, only my second time there, but it's were Slough Hollow Rd runs right next to the water. Caught the majority of the fish across from the two drainage pipes that run under the road. There was a guy there that had several whites and a very nice walleye.

Fished Beaver Sunday with my favorite fishing buddy. Watched him catch 4 very nice Whites. One had to be pushing the 4lb. mark. Biggest White I have ever seen. All I caught were a couple of nice spots and some bluegill. I even resorted to using a minnow, I thought my buddy was going to pass out. It was the first time he had seen me use a minnow! He caught one on a minnow, three on a white roostertail and I at least got to try out my new fly rod.

I agree on the wading. I got out of a very nice bass boat a few years back to fish the rivers. I absolutely love it!! Welcome aboard.

Anytime after June 17th and I'm in. Hate fishing the Rock when the water gets real warm, I'm a shallow water guy, but I can donate some money. I just assumed that it would be at Table Rock, then I noticed that nobody ever said that!!! Still don't care, I can donate money on any lake!

Let us know if you find a way to get on Linden Lake. There are some nice smallmouth in those waters. I have stood on the dam and covered as much water as possible and have caught several 14 - 16 inch fish. Saw a guy a couple of years ago that had been fishing along the darn carrying two really nice smallmouth in a 5 gallon bucket, one had to be pushing 17 inches. He asked me if I wanted them, I said no and suggested that he realease them. Oh no, he had been fishing too many times and caught nothing. He was dead set on somebody eating them. I blame myself for not taking them and then releasing them myself. Don't be fooled by these waters, there are some monster smallmouth that hang out around Linden. I stalked one for well over a month a couple of years ago. It hung right below a small run in a very small rootwad, the water was about waist deep. It would come up and look at my fly, get within inches of it, then vanish. That always sent goosebumps all over me.

Any new reports on water level and whites on the James???
Flysmallie replied to troutgnat's topic in James River
But it's so hard to be patient when your trying to plan a fishing trip. Troutgnat, I am also planning on fishing this weekend and I think we have a pretty good plan. We will be fishing either Beaver or Swan Creek (maybe both), Kings River, or James River. Of course anything holding water in between any of these is also considered a possibility. We are taking a boat and our waders, plus spinning rods, flyrods and I heard a rumor that someone was bring minnows! I'm not a live bait guy, but if that's what it takes. I feel that with this narrowed down plan we should be successful!! Take Phil's advice, be patient, check this site often and a the last minute make the totally wrong decision as I always do. As long as I'm near the water with a rod in my hand I always feel that I have succeeded. -
I agree, I would be more willing to fish a tournament in this format. I wouldn't even mind being an official. I could probably pick up a few pointers. Maybe we could keep Phil's tournaments operating the same way and get a new sponsor for the catch and release tournament, like Backcountry Outfitters!! By the way Michael you looked real nice on TV this morning. It would have been better if she would have just have been quiet and listened a little, but you know how that species is

From what I understand a Florida bass is just a genetic strain of the largemouth. I know it has done wonders for the bass fishing in Texas and Mexico. The main benefit is that they grow a lot faster. Not sure what impact it will have on the native fish though.
-
I do it for the same reason that I flyfish for Smallmouth, except I don't know what that reason is . I guess it's the challenge.

MTM, I have no recommendations, just had to comment on your Nitro Fish. You a drag racing fan?

Welcome BruceCarp, I'm not much of a crappie guy but Brian post reminded me of a nice crappie I caught on a fly. It was almost 15 inches long. Caught it on a gurgler at Lindenlure on the Finley of all places. Thought I had a nice smallie.

Smallmouth Bass Record
Flysmallie replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in General Bass Fishing Discussions
3 or 4 miles south of Nixa, Hwy 160 crosses the Finley River. You can park on the southeast side of the bridge. You may have to go down river a ways to get into some good water. Not the best spot in the world but there are some fish there. Check out the James River section on the forum. Phil has posted some excellent maps of the James River. All of these access points can be reached from Hwy 160 as well. Kerr Access is mt favorite area to start wading. The best spots are about a mile away from the access. It's a good walk . If we don't get some rain soon you may be disappointed Good Luck, you may see me at Kerr if you decide to go there. I'll be the only guy you'll see with a fly rod. -
Smallmouth Bass Record
Flysmallie replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in General Bass Fishing Discussions
I caught one just like that the other day.......... Wait a minute...that says 11 pounds not 11 inches. I want to catch one like that!!!! -
I'm in the market for a fly rod to use on my smallmouth adventures. I have been using a 5 wt, which is great fun when you do hookup, but it just won't cast the bigger flies I want to use. I found a great deal, possibly, on a TFO TiCr 8wt. Is that too much rod. I was thinking about a 7wt or maybe even a 6wt. Some of the flies I use are very wind resistant, but other are very heavy. I just don't want to get a rod that feels like I'm fighting the fish with a stick.

Hey Phil, are you still planning on having an OzarksAnglers outing on the Buffalo this spring. I am there if you are. It's a beautiful place.
