  1. I have been pondering this question for a while now. Why? I really have no idea. I do not fish with corn but I do hear a lot of people asking about it. The stories I have heard have been that trout can not digest the corn and it kills them. I have heard stories about how people have cleaned trout and found corn in their stomachs, there for they must not be able to digest it, so it must kill them. This is the story that has probably got me to thinking the most about this qustion, "Does corn kill trout." One of the things I have thought about has been, while watching others clean trout, I have noticed lots of sow bugs, scuds and midges in the stomachs of these trout. If the theory about the undigested corn equals it can not be digested is true then wouldn't that also mean that the scuds, midges, and sow bugs found undigested are not digestible also? Now that just doesn't make since to me. This evening I have done some google searching looking for studies and there is not much to be found. Lots of hearsay and stories very similar to the ones I have heard though. I did find information on one study.... Commission fisheries biologist Tom Bender at our Benner Spring Fish Research Station conducted a study in 1992 that examined the impact of corn on trout. For the study, two groups of hatchery rainbow trout were held in separate tanks and tested for 54 days. In one tank, 20 rainbow trout (average size 8.3 inches) were fed a diet of whole kernel corn. In the second tank, 20 rainbow trout of the same size were fed a standard trout pellet diet. During the 54 day study period, no mortalities occurred from trout of either study group. However, study results did show that the trout fed with a corn diet did not digest the corn particularly well. The growth observed by the corn-fed trout during the study period was only about half of that observed from the trout that were fed the standard trout pellet diet. The conclusion from this study was that there appears to be little reason for concern about the short term health hazards for rainbow trout when whole kernel corn is used for bait. Although there are better diets for trout than whole kernel corn, this study confirms that mortality does not occur when trout ingest whole kernel corn. Just thought I would share this in case some other member might be loosing sleep on this subject.
  2. You need to replace the standard fly reel with a mini cooper hub and rim for kings......lol. I have caught kings on a 5 at in smaller creeks but would not recommend it. A 10 at with a size 4 lamson and 300 yards backing works well. Just be prepared to do some chasing.
  3. Can't put a used jig back in the tacklebox. That just wouldn't be right :-)
  4. Fished both places again today. This afternoon my wife joined me on the Rock. Nothing real big but it sure was a great way to spend the evening. Fished the varmit all evening.
  5. The bait just seemed to get a little heavy or the line would start swimming. I ended up just setting the hook any time it felt or looked just a little different. Found some goggle eyes yesterday, or at least some fish that were similar to goggle eyes.
  6. Yeah, I have no idea what they really are. My wife informed me the red eyed one was probably a war mouth?
  7. Looks like you fellas had a good time. It was great to meet all of you.
  8. Can't see that far.......lol
  9. The sun was shining right in my eyes and I was having a heck of a time trying to see what I was doin
  10. Fished Taney this morning and caught a few slicks then headed over to the Rock this afternoon. Fished with trout gear. Two pound test light spinning rods and mostly sculpin and ginger marabou 1/8th ounce jigs. Put in at State Park and caught my first small mouth of the day about 30 yards from the ramp on my second cast. It just so happened to be the biggest of the day at 18.5 inches. Boated a 16.5 inch small mouth, a line burner, 2 at 14 inches and 5 or 6 little bitty ones. Also caught a couple of spots. One at 16.5, and two just short. Found a couple of goggle eyes too.

  12. An 8 wt is pretty standard for all the salmon except kings.
  13. They shut the gates today
  14. I think the wind was just blowing right and that's what brought him over this way.
  15. If they are running any amount of water, about the only direction you will be able to go is down stream. 55 pounds thrust just won't be enough to go upstream for very long against a heavy current. I used a 45 pound thrust trolling motor on an 8 foot 100 pound duck hunting layout boat and could cover about 5 miles of trolling before the battery would start to die. Just wanted to warn you about that. Now for the fishing part of trolling Taney. Spoons like Cleo's and kastmasters are a good choice for trolling. 4 pound test and varying your speed to find what they want. Right in front of the Landing would be a good spot along with the bridges area.
  16. I found 7 more yesterday. My brother and sister went to one of my spots today and got 145. A bunch of the are going into beef stroganoff tonight
  17. Found these after working today. Pretty much just ran through a spot to see if they were up. Will go finish it off tomorrow.
  18. Gotta have a pink boat to be a Nancy boy
  19. After hunting eggs this morning we found these.
  20. Took a peak today before work. Nothing yet
  21. How about some jet boats?
  22. CC was muddy on Friday. Marked lots of fish in the channel, but could not get them to bite. Went over to Sons creek area and did ok. Much better water clarity over there.
  23. Great looking fish and congratulations on the PB rainbow!
  24. I seen that gator the other day
