We have only caught 3 small browns in the last 3 days. I did see quite a few larger browns cruising the Big Hole yesterday while the water was off during the day. One of them was in the 32 to 34 inch range. Also saw 4 or 5 big bows milling around the Big Hole over 25 inches. Fishing at night has been tougher than usual, but still fun. Ran into a guy that was bragging about and 8 pound brown that he had caught and released then asked if I wanted to see it. It was laying belly up over by the bank and had been there about an hour. It does not do much good to release a dead fish, so we finally talked him into taking it home. It was odd that he was so set on catch and release even though he was releasing a dead fish???? I'm glad he finally decided to take it home instead of completly wasting it.

For my night time scuds, I've been using size 14 TMC 200r's and they have been producing very well after dark. The old Mustad 37160's in 14 and 16's have been a good one too for after dark, but they are getting hard to find.

We did very well yesterday at Look Out Island. Soft hackles in the chop and midges (size 16 zebras) about 12 inches under an indicator on the down stream side of the Island worked the best for us. Drifting size 14 grey sow bugs with lots of weight under and indicator on the back side of the Island picked up several bows too. Nothing over 17 inches for us yesterday though.

Nice running into you also Bruce.

Was not me at outlet one. I was down below outlet 2 fishing the bank with Phil Lilley. When I went up to the flats I saw those 2 up at one. They fished there all night.

I would suggest a simple and cheap tool kit that comes with a vise. They run about $30.00 for the set and you can get them at BPS or Cabelas to start with. As far as materials, I would decide on a couple of fly patterns to tie and just buy the supplies for those. After you have mastered those flies, pick a few more patterns and buy the materials for them. Do this a couple of times and next thing you know, you will be devoting a whole room to fly tying. Most kits that come with materials give you things you wont really use very much. My wife and I tie all the time together. We very rarely ever watch TV so we have the tying table and vises set up in front of the TV.

I was wondering, years ago when Taney was so good, where did the people fish? When did they fish? Accourding to the Missouri Department of Conservation the Nursery waters of Lake Taneycomo provide with a less than one percent reproduction rate. I believe this is part of the reason they built the new Brown Trout Hatchery. Is shutting down the upper end worth the less than one percent reproduction rate versus the loss in revenue to the state, county, and buisinesses of Branson. If so, then what is the purpose of the new Brown Trout hatchery? Lets face it, Lake Taneycomo is what it is. Since being turned into a cold water fishery, it has been a put and take fishery that brings great revinue to the state. I would be happy to see catch and release only on the upper end, but just like everything else in this thread, that is just and opinion. I'm sure we will see several more on this subject.

I'm sure there are several people on here that would be happy to help you out. I'm swamped with some big orders right now, but if you still dont have any in a month, let me know and I will fix you up.

Deer hair bugs would work. Have been using different types of dry flies as indicators for quite some time now with great success.

Started fishing around 8 p.m. tonight with 3 units running. The water just a little higher than I liked it again. Fishing started off kind of slow for me tonight. I lost a nice one right off the bat. It made a good run and broke me off and I had not even been fishing 10 minutes yet. Caught a couple of smaller bows and one little brown while the water was running on a yellow bead and a few on olive pine squirrel sculpins. The water was shut off about 10 p.m. so I went to the car, put up the chuck and duck rig, and grabbed the streamer rod. Headed up to the flats between outlets one and two and fished the falling water. Put 3 bows to hand then hit a nice one. 27 inch rainbow on a white mink conehead....Nice! Fishing got slow again for a while then started hitting browns on a flashy black conehead just before the storm hit. Picked up four or five nice browns and a half dozen bows then had to run to the car for fear of drowning in the rain. It was a long drive home dodging branches and fallen trees.

Water was again generating when we started. It was a little higher than I normally like it but most of the bank between outlet#2 and the last set of steps was still fishable. Fishing started off a little slow picking up a fish every now and then on white and olive non weighted pine squirrel sculpins. Had about 5 rainbows to hand and lost 1 other really nice fish before changing up just a little bit. For all you guys that have gone to Alaska and still have some beads left over....They worked very well last night. Yellow 8 mm beads were definately the ticket. Put several more bows to hand and 2 nice browns all on the bead. Lost another really nice fish on the bead also. I used the chuck and duck method to fish last night. This method has presented great opportunities for fishing at night with the water running. It enables you to cast under the over hanging trees when the water is generating and gets you down to the bottom fast making for a great drift and presentation. This makes outlet fishing completely unneccasary and you will usually have the whole bank to yourself while fishing. Everyone else will be working the outlets like fishing in a barrel.

The browns have fully invaded the upper end. Night fishing has been very good for me. Deep water nymphing techniques must be used when the water is running. One to 2 units have been perfect for working the banks during the evening. It would appear that most of the browns move over to within 15 feet of the banks under these conditions and if you can figure out a way to cast under the trees from the bank and get your fly down very quickly, you can catch alot of nice fish. Big sow bugs and scuds (10 to 14), pine squirrel sculpins, and egg flies have been working very well. Keep your lights off. The fish are there and you do not need to spot light them to ensure they are there. You will will push the fish out and away if you shine them.

Had a great time yesterday Phil! The fishing on the upper end was good to say the least. You may not have realized, but while we were fishing in front of the Fish House on the Landing, I pumped one of the trout's stomachs. Sure enough, them trout were just full of, believe it or not, CORNBREAD and a litte butter too. I am a firm believer in matching the hatch, so I have developed a new fly specifically designed for fishing in front of the Fish House Restraunt. I like to call this fly....Hot Buttered Cornbread. I'm sure it is gonna be a big hit in the fly fishing industry so I am obliged and honored to share this new fly with my fellow Ozark Anglers. Enjoy and tight lines!

Fishing is great there. That is one of my favorite place to swing soft hackles and strip cracklebacks.

Dang......You are right! I gots hog hunting on the brain! Thanks for pointing that out. I dont want anyone thinking I'm Ferrel Dog hunting. -
They dont own the water, the fish or even the land that the dock is attached too. Corps owns all the land surrounding Table Rock Lake and all the land under the water of Table Rock Lake. Sounds like these dock people are harrassing you during your legal persuit of game fish which I do beleive is against the law in the state of Missouri. Maybe you should be calling the sherrif on them.

I've used it on Brown Bears in Alaska and got a little taste of it from someone else that was trying to use it on a bear that was persuing him. It is some good stuff! I'd like to hear a little more about the ferrel hog problem. Been wanting to hunt them. If you could send me a PM with more details, Id love to go over that way and help reduce the population. -
Terry, I sure am glad you write instead of paint.....because you sure do paint an ugly picture
