Nice, what flies were workin this weekend?
-
And when you do that, you have to be sure to clip their line and keep their fly. That'll teach a lesson pretty quick, or they'll run out of flies.
-
I've never tried it but I'm sure that they'd work. In fact, I think that was what Jeremy was refering to in the first place. I had a lot of fun with hopper patterns last summer, so much that I think it's become my favorite way to fish.

I guess id have to see the original ebay post, but by just going off of what you just said, your not getting a ridiculous sale price or anything like that, but they might be worth a look. I personally have 2 of the lamson konics and couldn't be happier with them. I've never looked at the velocity or radius but if theyre anything like the konic they might be worth a look.

As far as finding a consistent pattern, there's really not just one go-to pattern although a lot of people seem to like that PMS fly. Really, a lot of your streamer patterns will work, you just gotta find a color that will work good. Even then, you're most likely gonna have to change colors a couple times during the night. As far as getting a handle on the night fishing in general, it don't happen overnight (pun intended). It takes a while to get the hang of it, just keep working at it.

Great Smallie...too bad it wasn't on the fly rod, that would've been nuts!
-
Okay, that makes a little more sense now, I obviously haven't been down there, but the way you describe it helps. Don't even get me started on Springfield drivers/traffic! What a mess...

Wow, I had no idea that one of the records came out of taney! Not to mention that it was caught by one of our own members. Nice work!

Fun Fishing Terrestrials On Taneycomo
zsmith62 replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Some of the funnest fishing I've ever had was last summer throwin out a hopper pattern at Taney. I would have to say if I had my choice of any way to fly fish, it would definately be fishing with terrestrials. There's just something about watching a trout rise to a big ol' dry fly. -
Just read in the Springfield paper that there has been at least five crashes at the gaston's runway since 1997. You would think that the FAA, NTSB or somebody would demand some kind of change to be made with that kind of a record. Just thought that was an alarming statistic. My condolences go to out to all of those involved as well.

Here's part of my post from last July of the biggest brown I've ever hooked during last years flooding at outlet 2: "I hooked up with the biggest brown I've ever had on my line, it probably was 30-34 inches. I thought I was snagged for sure, until it ran into the main current, where I thought it was gonna break off. Finally it made it's way back to me, where I proceeded to get it out of the water. As soon as I reached for it, it thrashed about and threw the hook. After it swam off, I realized my knees and hands were shaking uncontrolably, and that a crowd of about fifteen people had gathered above the stairs to watch me lose the fish." Anyways, I wish I could have caught it somewhere other than the outlet, but didn't really have much of a choice that day. I was standing on the side closest to the dam, just drifting my "secret" scud pattern. The thing must've been somewhere between 10-15 pounds. On that day, I hitched a ride down to Branson with my Mom since she was going down there anyways. I remember her coming to pick me back up shortly after all of this went down and her seeing my hands all jittery and wondering what had happpened.

Fly Casting Class
zsmith62 replied to Gallagher's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I've personally never taken such a course, but I've heard that the problem with bass pro's classes is that they do draw such a huge crowd and its next to impossible to get any one on one instruction. And if you think about it, that one on one instruction is exactly what makes taking the classes helpful. I think maybe going to a fly shop or somewhere smaller would be more instructional. -
Let me clarify one thing before this gets too out of hand, I do not have a problem with spinfishing or even those using spinning rods with FLIES in the fly zone. And, I don't really have too big of a problem with using the rapalas, I just think that the regulations are pretty vague and up for personal interpretation... all I was giving was my own interpretation, I guess I should've been more clear. As far as there being more trout in the fly zones, I think that it is that way for a reason, that being that the traditional method of fly fishing of using actual flies is inherently more difficult than say, dunking powerbait or using soft plastics. Fly zones just have more fish because they don't get culled out as quickly. It was also brought up that there are a lot of people who use flies in the other zones, well when those people are competing for fish with those using things like powerbait and soft plastics, I'd say that they are technically at a disadvantage. Anyways, I thought I'd point out that I wasn't attacking anyone personally, I was simply giving my own interpretation of the state laws that, lets face it, could use a little more clarifcation.

Okay... now I'm just trying to figure out the way some of you guys are thinking. If you want to use a rapala, spoon, or roostertail, they have specific zones for just that kind of fishing. I just cannot understand why someone would spend so much time trying to figure out whats legal and ways to find loopholes in the regulations. If you want to throw a lure do it in the perspective zone that was designed for that kind of fishing. I cannot get why some of you would risk a ticket to try and throw lures in the fly zone. The way I see it is if youre gonna fish in the fly zone, use a fly, not try and rig a lure up to try and bend the rules. Keep in mind that I do NOT have a problem with spin fishing. I do however have a slight problem with trying to cheat the system by throwing a rapala in the fly zone.
-
I believe the first part of that statement is true, however, simply replacing the trebles with a single hook on a jerkbait would NOT be legal in the fly zone. MDC's definition of a fly is "An artificial lure constucted on a single-point hook, using any material except soft plastic bait and natural and scented bait that is tied, glued or otherwise permanently attached." So, by that definition, given by the conservation department, your jigs would indeed be legal...of course you could always learn to fly fish...

Need A Little Help Picking Out New Waders
zsmith62 replied to TroutFearMe's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
My first pair of waders were one of the bass pro models as well, but as time went on, I got pretty tired of trying to fix leaks. I must've patched the things four or five times. Anyways, I ended shelling out the cash for a pair of simms and found them worth every penny. I would be willing to bet that you do pay a little bit for the name brand, but there is definetly a quality factor... -
What Is Your Favorite Pond Lure
zsmith62 replied to OzarkFishman's topic in General Angling Discussion
Something topwater, be it with spinning tackle or even better: a popper fly or a dry fly of some kind... -
Shakey-head jig, "secret pond", maybe about 4' of water. No idea on weight, just looked like it was my biggest.

Nice fish, I know I've heard it somewhere before, but can someone tell me how to tell the difference between males and females? I seem to have forgotten.

Nice Rainbow Caught This Am Up By Trout Hollow
zsmith62 replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Just to add to what FlyGuy said, egg patterns and soft hackles have proven useful as well as things like cracklebacks or just about any pattern that looks "buggy". 90% of the time I'm down there I'll throw a scud pattern, but there have been times I've ran out of them and have been forced to use things like hare's ear and pheasant tail nymphs. Sometimes one of the best strategies is to experiment and see what works at different times. A lot of your more generic nymph patterns will get some strikes, however, in my opinion, scuds are the way to go. Of course then theres always the streamer route, and then you can throw such a wide multitude of patterns that listing them would probably take forever. Generally speaking, the best time to use such flies is at night, but you can draw strikes all day if you get really dedicated to the whole streamer thing. As far as the dry fly thing goes, some of the most fun I've ever had fishing would be with big hopper patterns in late summer. -
Nice Rainbow Caught This Am Up By Trout Hollow

Around here, the only place where a gut fly is gonna have any real application would be up at Bennett Springs, where people also throw they're gut piles in the stream. Read this section: http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?s...96&hl=flesh -
Not sure if this will work or not... i read your post and went searchin around to see if I coud get anything to work. I ended up going to the "help" section and typing in "font size" and got about 30 results... I guess if I were you I'd kinda fiddle around with some of those options until something works.

Imagine the difference it would make if everyone did something like this and picked up at least one piece of trash each time they went out...
-
Can someone explain these 0, 00, and 000 line weight rods I'm seeing? Are they a lighter line than a one weight? What is the proper application for these rods? I can see maybe using something that light in like crane creek or somewhere like that, but I'd imagine that the flies used with such a rod would have to be really small.

Was just searchin around on the internet the other day and came across this japanese form of fly fishing called "Tenkara". Apparently, its alot like normal fly fishing, but they dont use a reel. Has anyone seen this done before or ever tried it? It looks like it would be interesting... Heres the link: http://www.tenkarausa.com/index.php
