Maybe I'm Just A Little Behind But What Is This?
Fly_Guy replied to Stockton Lake Guide Service's topic in Stockton Lake
I can understand attacking some fur farmers - - if you watch PETAs fur video - but I'm sure not all furfarmers are like this... hopefully. Raising foxes or mink in tiny cages and electrocuting them for a luxury item is a little excessive... It's not like hunting for food or raising chickens for food. I'm sympathetic with PETA on a very select few issues, but out of all the abuses of animals (fur, puppy mills, trophy hunting) they're wasting their time on fishing. There has never been any evidence that fish feel what we consider pain anyway. http://fishscam.com/faqPain.cfm -
We're going out from noon to 8 August 9th - I'm thinking trolling crankbaits and bottom bouncers. I got some Berkley Gulp black leeches I'm going to try behind a spinner on a bottom bouncer. Anyone ever use them before for walleye? Also, will we get hungup alot bottom bouncing? We trolled crankbaits last year, and picked up a few walleye and some crappie, but I havent used a bottom rig since Canada.

Oaf Angler Is, Eeeek, A Baitfisher Of Smallies..
Fly_Guy replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
Poor bloke - a fellow shouldn't have to defend himself from a bunch of yahoos for how he fishes inside the law. period. When times have been tight, I've been glad to bait-fish for some local white bass, and I was kicking myself for throwing back a good lgmth (instinct I guess) when I was trying to catch supper. -
Angler Caught Cheating During 2010 Us Open

I think an excellent rule would be to check the bellies of fish weighed in dead. Just for a little quality control.. -
Angler Caught Cheating During 2010 Us Open

I'm sure it goes on more than we'd imagine. Any idea on the survival chances of a released tournament bass with a 2oz. weight in its stomach? Can't be great... -
Whites Still Hitting At Fellows
Fly_Guy replied to Fishinokie1's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
Trying to make myself get up early enough tomorrow am - thanks for the tip on the bugs - I will have the Off. I went a few days ago and caught one jigging a gulp minnow, one on a rooster tail, and two more on shad. The shad are getting smarter though - gotta bring a net on a pole. I saw you had a cooler - good tip for anyone - in the hot water, get your fish on ice as soon as is practical. -
Anyone eat drum? I've read that they are actually quite good to eat - fillet easily, and are good fried. Anyone tried it? Wife and I are renting a boat from the marina for 4 year anniversary, and we may just keep them if we catch them.

Caught cats two of the last three times at fellows - around the culvert area. One nice 3 pounder.

Purple Flicker Shad - my new favorite crankbait - can't wait to try it out on Stockton sometime. I caught a real nice lm this morning at fellows with one.

Amen. Bass is a celebrity. Long live the Drum Anglers Sportsman Society!

If Ray Scott had been a walleye fisherman, we would be saying 'Nice mess!', and we would be giving people a hard time for keeping a limit of walleye on the Stockton forum. It's interesting to see how colored we are by the fact that the bass is a big money celebrity. If it's legal, 'sfine by me. I have no special feelings toward the bass compared to any other fish. If I catch a fish in a delicate habitat, I'll let it go, but these could be taken from a farm pond for all we know. Or a big lake. I never thought bass tasted that super however, but some people fish for food. I do, but for different, better tasting species (crappie, catfish, white bass). It's fun sometimes to just think about it - what if the bass had never become famous? What if Ray Scott started the Drum Anglers Sportsman Society? Drum 1) fight better 2) taste worse. Win-win in my book.

I have some catfish from fellows lake, some crappie from stockton and fellows, and still about 30 white bass fillets from the run on the James river this spring. Have 8 fillets of trout park trout - the rest are Crane creek rainbows I'm interested in the person who checked gar - I read an article in the Missouri Conservationist about eating gar - said they were really good when done right - are they? If I ever snag a biggun again, I wouldn't mind keeping em.

Just for fun. Add any fish I missed

A good ticket is to fish dries in the evening late an hour before last whistle - small dries like Adams, gnats and ants - also, when we were there last time, I had good success on a #14 brown scud 3 ft under a float - especially right at the start of the pools. Lastly, try floating a crackleback, and if they dont take it floating, strip it under the surface. Zone 2 and 3 are your tickets for flies tho - I was catching them well in zone 3 with the scud. I hear what you are saying - those trout in zone one can get really shellshocked after a few hours of spinners, worms, eggs, crankbaits and jigs hammering the water all around them.

my dad grew up fishing the 'sweet water river' in Wyoming for brookies. I've never been but would like to...

Bank Fishing Report
Fly_Guy replied to Fly_Guy's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
Got there before sunrise again, and started out throwing a flicker shad - gray/white. Hung into a bass, and a white bass. Then, the shad started schooling and I netted a couple dozen, and made the foolish mistake of trying to operate two poles at once with shad under slip bobber. After about 6 misses, 3 tangles, 3 largemouth bass, and 2 more white bass later, I learned my lesson, but the bite had cooled by that time. strung up 4 or so shad and let them sink, and took two channel cats, biggest around 2.5 lb or so. good eaters. As I was reeling the smaller cat in, a monster muskie darted out from under the culvert and grabbed it by the head. Luckily, I was using fireline, and thwarted his aims. If I had a foot long version of a banjo minnow, I would be posting pics of the muskie I caught this morning. Instead, these will have to do... -
Nights At Fellows
Fly_Guy replied to Lunkers Only's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
It is patrolled, but not frowned upon. I've seen the security fellow at 4 am, but there is nothing illegal against fishing all night. I've fished it after dark a few times, and you'll catch a ton of crappie - most small. Don't know about boats - I always have fished on the bridge. -
Don't know if this will help anyone, but here goes. Got there early (before sunup) two days ago, and fished by the culvert. Bass were up on the bank just hammering schools of 1-2 inch shad. Tied on a Berkeley Flicker Shad (my new favorite crank bait), and caught a couple - one small one, and one that would've went 3lbs. Nice bass. Netted a bunch of those shad, and caught a few crappie with em. Fished deep - right off the bottom - in hopes of catching another walleye. No luck, but did pick up a 15 inch flathead catfish and a small channel cat in addition to crappie. Small crappie. Came back after work (as the storm rolled in) and fished till dark after the storm settled down. Around sun-down, it was a crappie every 3 casts with twin crappie jigs, but most were small. Caught 3 that might have kept (one nice 10 incher), but ended up letting them go. In the am, the white bass were schooling and chasing baitfish out of my casting reach. Saw one small muskie (maybe 25 inches) close to the culvert, and saw another massive muskie roll right out in front of me. If you are serious about catching a muskie, get there before sun-up, with some decent size bluegill under a bobber, i expect. They are in there in numbers I am thinking. Around dark, I had a small crappie that I damaged getting the hook out, who was twitching on the surface. An owl came swooping out of nowhere and made a grab at him but missed. The owl stayed in the powerline overhead after that - probably waited for me to leave. Never seen an owl try to snag a fish before - quite cool. Sorry there isn't more actual fishing report in this fishing report - but I am going to get serious about catching a Fellows muskie sometime here. If it ever happens, I'll post it. Brian

Both parties are in the pocket of big oil. To pretend otherwise is folly. Just do some research on how much $$ big oil is giving both democrats and republicans. Both parties are incompetent - again, to pretend otherwise is folly. recommending a close of topic.
-
That's the funny part - nothing glaring comes to mind. We may have even gained a few...- at least there isn't an Obama version of the Patriot Act out there yet. I don't agree with a lot of O's policies, but he's not the crazy terrorist everyone thought he was. I do wish he would stop blaming everyone and actually do something to stop the stinking spill though. BP is obviously incompetent - it seems that passage of massive pork in a 1200 page health care bill is more urgent than doing something actually useful and stopping the oil...
-
Of course - the repubs will not dare escape big oil. A lot of Dems are in oils pocket as well - Obama himself received a huge chunk of bp change during his election. Nuclear - safer than coal, creates safer jobs (it seriously does), less waste... too bad, big oil says no...
-
As much as I like blaming the last guy, this is Obamas gig now. Do you honestly think he is any different? (If yes, you are fooling yourself) Destroyed is a bit harsh - damaged certainly - but considering the scope of the damage going on now (with now way to fix it), ANWR drilling would have been better. That is, of course, all hindsightland - the place where Urkle doesn't need glasses, and all of us OA armchair quarterbacks fix problems. Honestly, I have a conflict of interests. I love freedom, but I would also LOVE to see the government start mandating at least 50% of Big Oils profits go to researching alternative, renewable energy. Nuclear is a good transition from coal, but it isn't permanent. I really want to see solar become more effecient in terms of collection and storage. If we can put every Britney Spears song on a ipod the size of a postage stamp, we can certainly create solar powered everything. Its in the process, but needs some of that massive oil money to help with the R&D. Wind energy is ok too - solar and wind. All future cars should be mandated to be topped with a solar panel. Problem is, in a free society, people (the market) makes the calls (and don't people always choose what is best ) Freedom of choice is the best and worst thing a society can be burdened with.
-
To start w/ nuclear fuel is 100x safer and less harmful on the environment that oil. Problem is, people hear 'nuculur' and they panic. Who is to blame? BP - Had no real plan to deal with an oil spill, or plug a deepwater leak. Government - Moved slower than Katrina, and delayed/denied Governor Jindals requests Environmentalists - (ironic) - kept us from drilling in ANWR, and shallow water (where it is much easier to stop a spill). (but probably prevented other disasters...) Who is not to blame? Local and state government - doing what they can with what they have Locals & Volunteers - doing actual work to clean it up. What can we do in the future? the real question (I can see Phil with his finger on the "close topic" button )
