  1. I most likely carry the smallest assortment of flies of any flyfisherman on this forum. I have four basic sowbugs, one mayfly nymph, one egg pattern, and one barbell zonker. I carry 6 zonkers in the same color and 18 each of the sowbug, mayfly, and egg pattern. Over the years I have narrowed it down to these 7 flies to be my most productive, day in and day out, including night time. Trout eat the same things at night as they do in the daytime. The menu does not change.
  2. Not even a day old one.
  3. Thanks Phil!
  4. The lake level is 917.8 and the tailwater is 708. Are the gates closed? What is the water temp below the dam?
  5. After several years of chasing big browns, I have discovered the secret to the best times to pursue them. Trouble is, I can't remember when that is, so now I just go when I have the chance.
  6. Like Zach said, it won't be the same without you in the shop. Who's going to make us coffee and provide us with a place to hang out and tell lies. Best of luck Michael and Kristina.
  7. Did you know that the Nauga has been on the endangered list since the 70's? Upper taney was one of the few places that they maintained a reproducing population. With all of the hatchery improvements and the other development, I guess it was just a matter of time. I am sure the flooding events since 04 had some impact. I recall reading that they were introduced to US and Canada around 1778. They were almost trapped to extinction by the french fur traders in canada. Even as recent as the 60's, their hides were a valued item. I haven't seen a Naugu hide in years.
  8. Before you close this out, let everyone be aware that MOMO, or the boggy creek monster, is alive and well on upper taney. There has been a good population for as long as I can remember. Next time you are down for a night trip, just take a few minutes to stop and listen. You can hear him on the bank behind you, or just across the creek up in the brush. In 34 years of night fishing, I have never been attacked by one so that's a good thing in our favor. Had some close calls. The only thing that really keeps me nervous any more are the bears. Since 04 their numbers have increased ten fold on the upper end. On a dark night it is hard to tell if it is momo or a bear on the bank behind you. You have to look at the tracks to be certain. Good luck to all on your next night trip.

Outlet 3 is not big enough. It will only hold fish during the fall or when they generate 2 or more units. More than 2 units, the less area you have for fishing. Unless they build something, taney does not have a good access for kids or disabled. The wasteland east of the hatchery is about the only option. You could structure a creek all the way to #4 outlet that would allow fish from the river to have access. If that area will not hold water, then build a concrete creek. Sprinkle gravel on the bottom and call it good to go.
  10. The dredging of a perfectly good trout stream.
  11. Devil's Promenade, Hornet Spook Light, and Ozark Spook light. Same light, different names from the 1800's to present. Located near Joplin.
  12. Momo is the show me sasquatch. The only recent sightings have been on upper taney.
  13. I think you are right Wayne. RR was acquired in 1932 and the stone work at both parks are typical of the work by the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps.
  14. I don't recall anything about snagging in your original post. Not sure what 2sheds is referring to. The only place you will find cordwood fish is within 30 feet of an outlet. I say do what you originally stated and let others take care of themselves. Give us a report.
  15. Brownieman, I don't recall ever seeing a rod with the pistol grip handle before. Clever idea. I was going to tell you a cure for your CRS problem, but now I can't remember what it was. My first fly rod caught trout was at the high bank hole at bennett around 1962. I had an 8.5 southbend fly rod with a southbend reel. I was using a brown wolly worm with a red tail. I caught three fish that day and thought I was top dog on the creek.
  16. The rr tracks have me confused as well. I know they have to be there somewhere. Hopefully we get some more input.
  17. Brian, I called the recording at 9am. Tr lake level was at 919.0 and beaver was running one unit. I talked with Jeff T. last night and he said that the mississippi had lots of water south of st. louis. That will probably determine how quick the white river chain can let water go. I know that bull shoals has alot of holding capacity, but how much? You're estimate of 3 weeks at 4 units would be a safe bet. I think that the tailrace level was at 711. Doesn't look good. I think that the current will be down in a couple of weeks, so I may make that my winter hot spot. Other than our normal resident browns, I would say it's over. What is the water temp below the dam? That will have an impact on the rainbows as well.
  18. Hi Zack, In the early to mid 80's I have witnessed a handful of fish in the 5 to 7 range on the very upper end. With the creek being so small it was virtually impossible to get close enough to fish successfully to them. Kerry Daniels and I have literally crawled to the edge and used the flip and dip technique. Even at that they usually spooked to the undercuts. Charlie Reading caught a 4 pounder during this same time period. It is the largest that I know of being caught. He has the picture in his fly shop. During this same time period, the lady that lived above wire road, raised trout in raceways on her property. I suspect the larger fish came from her. We were invited once to view her hatchery, and she had about 6 fish around 5 pounds and several smaller fish. I caught a brown at the tressel bridge that was close to 3 pounds, where that fish came from, I have no idea. I have not returned to crane in years.
  19. I think that the confluence is behind you. I am wrong about the rr track on the left. That would be the river road up to gene's trout dock. I am thinking now that we are looking at the tressel bridge and the hwy 5 bridge would be upstream. The rr has me confused. I cannot remember if it crosses the river. There is a rr track that runs along that side of the white up across from ranchette campground and I am thinking it crosses the norfork. I may have the details all turned around, but I am thinking you are at the confluence of the norfork and white. Dano and some of the other arkansas boys need to help us out.
  20. It looks like the Norfork bridge on 5 hwy. Just to the left of the picture should be a rr track. Years ago I can remember a building similar at the base of the bridge. But don't take that to the bank.
  21. cleaning their limit of fish. { The End }
  22. I will tell this one on myself. I used dryer lint and found that it dissovles in water.
  23. Thank you for the validation. Your comment about the dubbing material is good. Years ago we called them fur bugs. You had to give them a buggy name even though they were just a ball of fur.
  24. My apologies Leonard. I did not mean to imply that you did not tie the original. I was just referring to the first time that I saw and used the fly. The boys from springfield called their fly a "haywood" named after one of their professor's.
  25. HEy FLyguy. When did they post "no shuffle" signs?
