Spavinaw Creek Benton County Arkansas
Zack Hoyt replied to yummysmokedham's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
On the Arkansas side there is pretty much none. You have the Beaver Tailwaters over here and thats about it. Afew up your way in SWMO, but I am sure you hit them. What did you think of Beaver? What waters have you already hit or are already aware of? Check out the Fly Fishermans Guide to Arkansas and Missouri next time you get a chance. Lots of info there as well as the Home Waters book by Mr Berry. -

This might open a can of worms..... The section the AGFC lists is actually a private section help by a rather elite group. They charge you a fee to have "access to some of the best private waters in teh nation". If I want to catch stocker trout I will go to the Tailwaters below Beaver. I have fished Spavinaw but it is mainly wamr water and very water dependent. Good smallie and panfish action. The closer you get to the Ok line, the deeper, and better the fishing gets. Have you looked into the various smallmouth streams locally? Kings, Elk, Indian Creek, Upper White, Buffalo, etc..... -

Tightlines Flyfishers - Springdale, Ar
Zack Hoyt replied to Zack Hoyt's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Next meeting is September 21st at 6pm. Mr. Ron Duncan, Commisioner from the AGFC will be speaking at this meeting. This will be a good meeting as the subject will no doubt be the proposed changes to the Norfork Cathc & Release Area. There are alot of emotions tied up in this and Mr Duncan has been nice enough to come and speak to us about it. Here is a little information about Mr Duncan from the AGFC website: Governor Mike Beebe named Ron Duncan of Springdale as his most recent appointment to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Duncan replaces Sonny Varnell of St. Paul, whose term had expired. Duncan is a devoted outdoorsman and educator. Duncan started a fishing club in 1982 at Springdale Central Junior High School, where he was a civics teacher. Based on the simple idea of introducing kids to fishing, the club inspired a national initiative known as the “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” program. That program has produced thousands of similar clubs nationwide. HOFNOD, as the program is known, is also administered by AGFC to numerous Inducted into the Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2004, Duncan has twice been honored as the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society Man of the Year and was the National Wildlife Federation Educator of the Year in 1999. Through the fishing clubs he’s championed, Duncan has worked closely with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s education and fisheries divisions. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Duncan joined the Springdale School District in 1974. He remains with the district today as a student counselor. Duncan’s term on the commission will expire on July 1, 2015. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Look forward to seeing you guys there. -
Making Google Earth Work Better
Zack Hoyt replied to Zack Hoyt's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Thanks Eric. I figured most states have them, but hadnt searched MO yet. Missouri Dept of Conservation This shows all conservation and MDC accesses: http://www.mdc.mo.gov/atlas/google_earth/ Corp of Engineers Lakes This gives locations and access information to all the CoE Lakes. Also gives links to the lakes websites for further information: http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/visitors.cfm -
I know I am not the only one who surfs Google Earth looking for creeks and new areas of lakes to fish. This program is perfect for directions, aerials, and gaining a tad more information, but there are a lot of people out there who have added options to make it really work better. There are .kmz and .kml files that run in conjunction with the program to add useful info. Tourist locations, peoples pictures, info, etc. It is really endless. I figured it would be beneficial to have a place here where we can list the add ons we use. I will start with a few I find very useful. Topographic Map Overlay This add on brings the quad or topo maps from the whole US and will overlay them on the location you are looking at. Very useful when charting a hike or looking at how the land curves. I accessed this at the Ark Game and Fish website. It is titled "Topographic Map Overlay". http://www.agfc.com/data-facts-maps/maps/googleearth.aspx Stream Guages This gives you links to the various stream guages across Arkansas. Very handy to figure out amount of rainfall, rise or fall of CFS, etc. It is titled "Stream Guages". http://www.agfc.com/data-facts-maps/maps/googleearth.aspx Real Time Weather There are a few different addons for this. I prefer using this route by the National Weather Service. Go to the main page(http://www.nws.noaa.gov/) and input the desired location Zip Code. When it brings up the forecast and radar for your location, scroll about 3/4 way down the page. On the right hand side you will see two icons, one will say KML and one will say XML. You want to click the KML and it will automatically open Google Earth. This adds real time radar options to your google earth. I am looking for a nationa wide radar, but this covers a wide range around the zip code you provide. Bull Shoals Accesses This next one was made by Mr Scott Branyan. Most of you know the acceses and runs by heart, but this is great have as backup info or to pass along to new fisherman. He mentioned it as well as the AGFC files in his Reachcast Newsletter(if you dont subscribe, i recommend you do). Go to his website(http://www.flyflinger.com/whiteriveraccesses.php) and under Google Maps you ahve files for both Upper and Lower Bull Shoals. These open like the others and will bring up your Google Earth Application. Buffalo National River and Upper White(Fayetteville) This add on is put out by the Itinerant Angler. They have a few add ons for different waters. This one not only adds placemarks, it also gives you info about the area. http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/google_earth/ I plan on adding more as I remember where I foudn them. Hope this helps a tad.

Project Healing Waters Returning To Taneycomo

Bump. Is there anything else we can do to help? Food? Giveaway items? Flies? -
-
Are you guys gonna make fun of my waders and boat this time around again???? I am going to do my best to be up there to help.
-
Goign with what Eric said.....this is not a rod or tackle purchase you can skimp on. You will be in the alot of the time. This is like buying any shoe, you want to get a good quality or it will affect you(fatigue, soreness, backpain, etc). Save up and get a good pair or you will definitely regret it.

I guess they havent updated the FFF listing. The website is: www.tightlinesff.org We meet the third Monday of each month. Our next meeting is September 21 at Jim's Razorback Pizza in Springdale. Get your plate and tell some stories from 6-7 and the meeting starts following. Feel free to pm or email me with any questions. It is a very good time and we all are equal opportunity fisherman(warm and cold waters).
-
Without giving away any trade secrets............do you alter your flies for the fall season? I know some bugs can tend to be a tad larger as well as sclupins, crawfish, etc and different color. Do you find a change in color selection or pattern helps at all? I have wondered since alot of the bugs have such a short lifespan(a few days at most), do they tend to change for the fall or do you keep fishing the tried and true. Thanks for the outlook. Hope you can sneak away to Conclave.
-
Yes and no. There was alot of activity over the holiday and also with the cold weather more people are getting out. This is whats making them skittish. AGFC had stocked a week ago, so there were alot of well fed fish. Also, since they are not "starving" takes tend to be very subtle. I was using half a foam indicator and was still missing fish. Also the didymo is kicking in, which isnt directly affecting the fish right now, but probably will. The good part is the water backed up from Table Rock is finally getting back to normal....so its more like you are fishing a running creek versus a big bahtub. On a seperate note, I would like to invite you down to our Tightlines Fly Fishers meeting Septmeber 21st. It's always a good time and a very laid back atmosphere.
-
Lots of canoe traffic has had fish on the tailwaters rather skittish. They are still catchable though. Weather has been very nice to us with mild temperatures and comfortable amounts of rainfall. The water below the darn is starting to lower back to normal levels with the other Dam Systems on the White unloading their water. The fish have been feeding well this spring and summer, so they are nice a plump. Guys using spincast gear should try a smaller rainbow or brown trout colored rebel hard bait and also the usual Troutkiller or Powerbait. The fish have been moving alot, so don't cast to the same spot over and over. Fly fisherman should be switching to fall patterns. Olive, grey, and tan scuds and sowbugs under an indicator. Also don't forget your nymph patterns. Copper Jons, Red Jons, BWO Nymphs, etc in smaller sizes are a good choice. Alot of time the difference between catching and not catching can be as simple as adjusting the depth of your fly. Take advantage of the foggy mornings. If you are canoeing, remember the C&R area runs from the walk-in at the Bathouse all the way down to Parker Bottoms. This means no treble hooks, scented or moldable baits, or live baits. This fall is going to be a great season on the Tailwaters so be sure and make time to enjoy it.
-
What time did you start? Ken and I started at Bathouse about 7am and worked our way down to the turnaround by about 11. A sz 16 copper jon about 2.5 feet under the indicator seemed to work well. Fish were recently stocked and were very fat. Took this picture during the fog. Also took this one of the didymo around the first campground walkin.

Give Mike a call at Riverside Resort for a good report on river conditions. I did a trip a few weekends ago and the water was LOW. Lots of fish though. Yum Vibra kings and Rebel Heelgramite hard baits worked very well for us. Alot of fish in the tail outs of rpids and feeding on bugs along the grassy shoreline.

I am heading over on Thursday and leaving Sunday......but not via Springfield.

Water is nothing to mess with. Brian, my hat is off to you. I have taken a few swift water rescue classes and they are very good knowledge to have. More than teaching you what to do incase of an emergency, they teach you the true power of water. It is very easy to mis-step on river beds as is.....add flowing water to that and it is almost a given. I recommend all fishing clubs and canoe/floating organizations to attend swiftwater rescue courses or have a member of the local search and rescue come speak. Most people dont know how to properly wade, or even how to float down stream if you do fall. It comes down to the fact you are not only endangering yourself. Brian could have easily mistepped on the bank and fallen in, just due to the fact he was concentrating on the guy in the water and not where he stepped. You put anyone and everyone who might try to help you at risk. saving someone from highwater is a very risky en devour. Is it really worth one or two more fish vs. the rest of your life?
-
Very interesting. In Ark, it is not legal either(to cut standing timber on Corp property). It is ok to take dead timber if I remember correctly. On Beaver, we have been dropping structure for some time. There is very little natural structure left. The Corp no longer sinks used Christmas trees.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge....opinions, opinions......lol I use a 6lb Trilene XL on a 6.5' BnM Crappie Rod. It is very good for pulling the fish out of the brush and also for keeping form loosing lures in the rocks. As far as baits, I have had alot of luck on a Yum Finesse Tube 2in with smaller white jighead. Motor oil neon color. Also use the 3.5" Vibra king Tube in a pumpkin seed or dark red color with a 3/16oz jig head inside the tube. Ken Smiths book is top of the line. Tons of great info in there.
