  1. If someone has aroused the landowner to the point that he feels like he needs to confront all floaters passing thru, then the bad publicity may lead to a new court hearing causing a new decision as to what "rights" the public has on "private lands" surrounding Missouri streams. Still waiting for the rest of the story.
  2. Kinda why I thought there might have been "the rest of the story".
  3. No, it was the blacktop one lane bridge off V. The shooting did not even have anything to do with fishing, but it made the landowners of the area think about the insurance liability of the area so I was told. It is legal to float a boat thru, wade thru, but banks of the area are private property. No road easements or right of way easements on county roads in Madison County, so it is private when you leave pavement.
  4. A real man does not worry about what people think about them in those depts., they think about what they can do with some of the women there.
  5. Well, the first report was kinda vague, some posts were deleted, some threads were locked. Then, JD, had to deal with a tornado at the farm, being trapped by flash floods for 5 days with no phones or internet, and playing catchup with the real world when I got out. So, Crickets explanation was welcome. As far as the private land problem goes, I have to deal with it here at several locations. One access has been closed on the Castor River at a county bridge, MDC and Madison County Sheriff Dept. have both stated that stepping out on dry land will result in a trespassing charge. It stemmed from a shooting/murder that occurred on the bridge a few years ago.
  6. Yep. We cut out some silver maples last summer that may have ended up on the house had they still been there. Lucky us. A cherry tree clipped the corner of the house as it came down but no damage. The roof was damaged by the wind.
  7. The decision to blow has been issued, it starts tonight and runs thru tomorrow morning in a series of 3 levee breaches. The first on the upper end floods the horseshoe shaped area creating a lake, the next two creates the outlet downstream near New Madrid. The thing is not really about saving Cairo after all, the reference to the Cairo River Gauge has caused some confusion. When the river hit 61 at the Cairo Gauge, the floodway has to be activated to relieve stress all along the levee system. The levee is already overtopped in the first blast area. Upstream, levee's gave way today at Fayville and Dog Tooth Bend flooding towns near Olive Branch today causing more flooding. There is water every where you go around here if it is flat, hill country is in better shape.
  8. They have issued voluntary evac below the dam in the St Francois River floodway as the tailwater is on the rise. With the topping of the spillway, they plan to release additional water thru the normal gated spillway. Till now, they have been trying to control the downstream flooding somewhat. The dam is still functioning as designed. Two levees breached today across the river in Ill., one at Fayville near Olive Branch and the other at Dogtooth Bend flooding a farm of some friends and several towns over there. The Corps of Engineers are set to blow the Birds Point Floodway system starting at 9 pm tonight and running thru noon tomorrow.
  9. It was pretty twisted and busted up. Might be able to build a whitewater yak out of it. Thinking about cutting the stump off level and preserving it some way. Here is another pic from a different angle. All of the trees around it have come up from the main one and are all catalpa's.
  10. Why did they have to pollute the ocean with his carcass? Some poor shark has a belly ache right now. Good Riddance.
  11. Thanks all. There are several other offshoots of the main tree scattered around the farm and one in my yard at my house. Funny you should mention the boat thing, Dad and I discussed that the second day of the flooding... We plan to salvage what we can, but the interior was hollow. What we had pales to what others have suffered, we know how lucky we are and have counted our blessings. Massive flooding in SE MO. Massive deaths in Al. Possible breach of a levee system in New Madrid. And, after catching up on here, flooding in Taney.
  12. So what was the issue then? Somebody asked you to leave private property and?
  13. Like I stated, those in the flood plain have profited for years off the benefits of the levee system. The levee was only engineered to hold back "x" amount of water and we have exceeded that amount. It is not just Cairo, but many towns along the east bank of KY too, like Hickman.
  14. Salmon swim upstream, spawn, then they die. I have seen it before, in the wild. All of the dead salmon seems like a waste, but nature has a purpose for them.
  15. A week ago Tue., a tornado passed thru the farm. It tore up trees, ripped the roof off several sheds, and the roof on the house. The sad thing was, it tore down the catalpa tree that was planted by my great, great grandfather. He was the first generation to own the farm, I am number 5. I arrived on the scene Friday, we were still out of power. It was restored temporarily on Sat. The flooding arrived Sat. night, it put 3 large trees on the bridge trapping me in. Monday night storms dumped several more trees on the bridge and and knocked power out as the storm took out power lines 1/2 mile north of us. I was finally able to get out Tuesday late. Floods again on Wed. closed the bridge again. This is the little creek that is barely worth wading, ankle deep at most crossings. And, this is not even close to the major flooding we have had in the past. It even flushed out an otter. What a freakin week, I will be glad when this weather slows back down to normal.
  16. Don't need the hose now!! It dried out under the glass frames I used to warm it up. Now, it is the only thing that has enough drainage with the flood.
  17. So, were there any tickets issued.
  18. I can personally attest to the fact that it will be a great year for cicadas. At the farm last week, I was gathering rocks to fill in washouts in the road, under ever rock was several cicada nymphs waiting to emerge. Under one rock was a colony of ring necked snakes.
  19. If it were not for the Corps of Engineers levee, the owners of the farmland would not have been able to enjoy the years of profits they have enjoyed as a result of the good farmland that they have used. But, as a landowner, we only rent our land from the Federal Government, ultimately, it can be taken as they wish. The burst point was designed into the levee, the New Madrid "Spillway" has been improved in the past few years. Common sense shows the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. But, if I owned a place in the area, I would probably be sniping a certain barge right now waiting for a big boom. It really goes to prove the fact, we only "rent" our land from the Government, we never really own it.
  20. Don't know where you are hunting, but if I was after wood hens, I would have several limits on the farm. Have not busted a turkey yet.
  21. Yes. Around here, the law is becoming anything that is dry. Even wading on the stream bottom according to Madison County and whatever county East Prairie resides in per MDC.
  22. I would suggest you make contact with some of the landowners along the stream, maybe they will help too. Locally, one of them even offered to haul off the trash we collected on the Castor River a few weeks back.
  23. First politics, now the race card.
  24. I wonder that myself, if they were asked to leave and they left peaceably, there should be no charges. Cricket's post did not mention any tickets. Still waiting on the rest of the story.
