  1. Had that happen to us a few times on the James while snagging for paddlefish at night. Good thing for gps!
  2. I'd have loved to hop on, but I was too busy getting my truck cleaned out and loaded up for my deercation. Hopefully I will make the next one.
  3. http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/places-fish/trout-areas/resource/st-louis-winter-trout-program That PDF states that you only need a trout permit if you want to keep the trout and that catch and release anglers do not require one.
  4. When Roland catches them, they start put as a 4 and finish as a 5,6,7 pounder!!
  5. Break out the ledge fishing gear!
  6. I'm with Ham on the jigs. I nearly always catch more fish on jigs than I can drifting bait. The last time I was down this summer, I couldn't even catch a fish on power bait, but I caught them great on jigs as well as trout magnets and jerkbaits. White and orange/brown jigs in 3/32 and 1/8oz never let me down.
  7. 20# braid on an ultralight? I run 15# braid on a 7' medium action rod for bass! Are you trying to make due with tackle that you already own or are you buying something new? My personal preference is a 6-7' light actioon rod (I use a BPS Microlite graphite rod) with a small spinning reel (I use a Plueger President 6925) and 4# mono. If you're trying to just make due with what you have, just use your finesse spinning gear with the fluoro leader. It will work for drifting powerbait.
  8. I've had old timers tell me stories of 100 pound catfish in the Bourbeuse River too. You know, a river that is doing good to have enough water in it to not have to drag a canoe between the holes lol. Truth and facts aren't as fun as a good fish story no matter how far fetched they are.
  9. I need to get my butt in gear and get my LED's rigged up on my rail and start killing some fish. I've fished so much this fall that I'm just now to the point of switching from fishing to gigging. Having a boat dedicated for gigging would sure be nice right about now! I'm kicking myself in the butt for selling my first boat!
  10. I'd love to fish that stretch that you floated, but I've never ran my jet boat above Boiling Spring. I know guys that make that long run up river and find some dandy bass, usually largemouth, in that area.
  11. nomolites almost owed me a new keyboard just now.....
  12. I served it up like a Rosenthal fastball down the middle of the plate......somebody had to jump on it lol.
  13. That's still not as bad as what I posted in the Maramec Springs section one day. I meant to say something about taking kid's down there fishing and it being filled with a bunch of "dinks" and I accidentally typed dicks! Somebody caught it before me and made a post quoting it.
  14. Does that mean you yell and cuss at others that fish too close to your dock?
  15. I didn't realize that about the largemouth/smallmouth cross. Everything I've ever really heard about them refers to a spot/smally cross. The largemouth/smallmouth meanmouth must be quite a bit rarer.
  16. By the second morning, I'd broke off quite a bit off line. After breaking off a few more times, I ended up putting fresh line on and skipping wasn't as good, but I figured it was just due to the rough water. I guess there were a lot of little things that helped me being able to skip better the second morning.
  17. Does it have to be mostly kentucky to be considered a meanmouth or how does that work? This looks like it had more smallmouth in it than kentucky, but I've never heard of smallmouth being caught on the Gravois I know they can be caught up the Niangua arms, but that's a long ways off.
  18. Well maybe I'm not as terrible as I thought then. My skipping percentage was pretty good when I could find some calmer water early on. I never thought about using the cables and angle iron to keep my lure on a certain level like you mentioned. It does make sense though.
  19. What type and weight lures do you usually skip? Most skipping involves a jig the way it sounds. Do you have more trouble with skipping in rough water versus smoother water? The water chop was the biggest thing for me it seemed like because my skipping was much more consistent early on before things go too rough.
  20. I think I could probably skip a 1/4 or 5/16oz jig easier, but it was too windy to effectively use something that light. I'll definitely be getting some practice in with skipping on the rivers using the lighter jigs. The bait I was trying to skip was a full size brush hog with a 3/8oz bullet weight pegged in place. Every know and then I would get the angle just right and it would skip across the water just like it does when the pro's do it. The next attempt would be equivalent to throwing a rock straight down in to the water with a nice backlash to follow.
  21. We put in at Millstone Marina near the mouth of the Gravois this past weekend. It's $5 in and $5 out and is just under 7 miles to the dam. You also got Shawnee Bend public access and it's just a hair over 11 miles to the dam. Coffmann is only 9 miles though, which still isn't all that far. Not sure how much farther it is driving wise for you though.
  22. That's a bummer Blazerman! We did catch a limit of keepers on Saturday that would weight around 12 pounds. Most of those were caught within the first two hours of daylight. Our numbers were similar yesterday, but only one was a keeper. I'd say we caught 10-15 fish each day. My partner caught a nice walleye on a spinnerbait yesterday morning and I caught a flathead later in the day on a jig. I'm going to thoroughly enjoy my $175 fried flathead dinner!
  23. I learned a few things after fishing up there this weekend. I'm terrible at skipping with a bait caster when there is chop on the water and dock cables are the debil! Trying to fish around those things and not being able to skip worth a darn is frustrating to say the last, but I knew that where's the fish were so I put up with it. Seems the bash is won every year by somebody fishing a jig behind a dock. Anybody else on here very good at skipping with casting gear?
  24. I caught this on the Gravois arm of LoZ this morning. At first I thought it was a smallmouth, but noticed the faint markings that kentuckies usually have.
  25. backside of a dock on a white spinnerbait in 4' of water in a cove. i was surprised as well
