    Turns out it's not just one rabbit. No, that's not surprising, but we had only seen one at a time until last night when we spied a teeny leetle baby bunny. Shazbot! All the rain (4.75 inches MTD) is washing away the cayenne and my lettuce is getting eaten through the cages. Beans have had their first true leaves gnawed off so they're a bust. Peppers are gone but I've got three more to plant. Guess I'm gonna have to go all hillbilly and put up some chicken wire. Where are the foxes when you need them?? In other news, mother robin has given up on building on my front porch.

  9. Don't know the area at all, but I’m not surprised a reporter would lump this in with a nearby area with a reputation. Reporters often plain get the facts wrong or sensationalize. Pretty sad story really. Sounds like a kid made a quick, bad decision and it cost him his life. I think we’ve all done stupid stuff and came out ok.

    One of my favorites tonight. Meatloaf and creamed peas. Pretty basic meatloaf with onion, bread crumbs, eggs, milk. Love the quick sauce of ketchup, mustard and brown sugar. All we are saying...is give peas a chance!
  11. Very cool! The people in the cathedral pics really give you a sense of the scale. Impressive! Can’t say that I’ve had a German-made Kolsch, but I really like the style from the craft ones I’ve had

    My baby girl has been under the weather and she ordered up one of her favorites — beer and beef stew. Pretty straight forward beef stew with potatoes and carrots, but with a can of Guinness in with the beef broth. Lots of rosemary and thyme. No pics — it looks just like beef stew. 😁

  17. Would be cool to learn more about your grandfather's missions and see what you can find out. I had an uncle killed in WWII in Italy. Have done some research and know the approximate location of where he was killed. Going to be in Italy in a few weeks and I'm giving strong consideration to driving to the area -- about 2 hours from where we're staying -- to check things out.
  18. The old European cathedrals are hard to comprehend until you set eyes on them. The engineering is really impressive, to say the least; tall, thin walls filled with stained-glass windows, the massive heights, etc. Cologne Cathedral somehow withstood the heavy allied bombing in WWII though much of the town was flattened or burned to the ground. If you care, PBS has been running an episode of Nova that explores how they built the cathedrals. Just watched it the other day.   19. If I was there for a week on business fishing wouldn’t make the list. A week on vacation maybe. Culture, food, beer, wine and history would rank higher. Gotta see the cathedral there. But that’s me.

    Birthday in the family got celebrated today. Mexican themed food. Fajita with marinated flank steak done over charcoal, red and yellow bell peppers and red onions. Kathy tried a new chicken enchilada recipe that was very tasty. Sauce of onion, poblano, garlic, ancho chili powder, cumin, tomato sauce, chicken broth. Did the chicken over charcoal too. Pintos with onion, garlic etc. Everything was delicious. Then the cake: Tres Leches cake. White cake, poke full of holes then pour over a mixture of condensed milk, evaporated milk and milk. Refrigerate overnight then frost with whipped cream and dust with cinnamon. Served with strawberries. The cake was a big hit, even though most of us don’t really care much for cake. I loved it, but it was very rich. All new recipes but for the fajitas, and they’re keepers.

    Freakin’ animals are making me nuts this spring. Had a robin (maybe 2?) build a double wide nest over my front window. Two together. Knocked those down and thankfully there were no eggs. Later that day mamma decides she’ll rebuild above the front door. Full nest built quickly with plenty of mud on the porch, storm door, siding. Knocked that down. By a couple hours later there was a new nest well underway. Knocked that down. Within a few hours another new one was underway. Knocked that one down too. Like the dude in Holy Grail who kept building new castles in the swamp on the ruins of the old. Got out the hose and sprayed everything down good. Lots of grass and mud up there. After that was cleaned out I got out the step ladder and sprinkled cayenne pepper up there. Seems to have changed her mind. Though she may just be waiting for me to go to work tomorrow. Speaking of work, there’s a sparrow nest pretty near where I park. No poop problems so I just keep parking there. Then last week there’s a dead chick on the hood of my car. Didn’t have anything handy, so I figured I’d start driving and it would eventually blow off. Nope. Turns out sparrow chicks are pretty sticky.

    I’m pissed. By Thursday all the lettuce and peppers were mowed down to ground level. Parsley and dill chewed down to the stems. Some of the onions pulled up and gnawed on. Maters ok and the rest of the herbs too, but dang it. Found some lettuce plants and bought a bunch this morning. Put them in the ground, covered them with wire cages and shook a bunch of cayenne pepper over everything. By 6:00 one of the cages was nudged over and one lettuce plant was gone and another was pulled out of the ground.

    Who wants pasketti? We did. So I did it the easy way. Meatballs of ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, pepper and a little water. Formed smallish balls and browned in the browning slow cooker. Got rid of the extra fat and added a jar of Prego. Cooked on low for a few hours. Roasted some garlic. If you’ve never done this you should give it a try. Take a full head, slice off the top, stick it in a piece of foil, drizzle with olive oil and grind on some pepper. Close it and roast at 400 degrees for 40 minutes. Comes out creamy, sweet and brown. Not sharp at all. Squeezed that out on take and bake ciabatta rolls with some olive oil. Plated it all up and dressed everything with some freshly-grated Parmesan cheese, parsley and some good extra virgin olive oil. Served with an Italian red from Tuscany. Dang good meal from the pantry and fridge and freezer. Well, I stopped for the wine.
