    What's Cooking?

Had some pasta, vodka and cream. Picked up a can of crushed tomatoes and some bread. A little garlic, olive oil. Mix it well togedda and -- voila! It tasted good when I put it in my mouth
  2. I have a no schlong photo policy.
  3. You have a pic???
  4. Elaborate please.
  5. I made some more cornbread stuffing this morning. Just didn't have enough left over to fully scratch the itch, plus there's still gravy. Heaven on a plate. Yeah, I need to get on the leaves.

    What's Cooking?

    Turkey soup, baby.
  10. I roasted it whole this year. I think it would have been better to go spatchcock like I did last year. Somebody remind me next year, ok? For me, the stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy are what I Jones for. They were excellent and there's plenty left over. I managed to offload most of the turkey, and that's ok Too much dessert left over. Sister in law is the bread pudding queen, and she delivered again. Sweet potato pecan bread pudding. Dang. Pumpkin pie and a little tiramisu left plus the bread pudding.
  11. Pumpkin pie, cornbread, tiramisu, spiced pecans-check. Brine ready, turkey thawed-check. Other projects:
  12. Put together the brine tonight. Needs to chill overnight to be cold and ready for tomorrow. Been using Alton Brown's brine and roasting method for a dozen years or so...love it, so no reason to change now. Bring it all to a boil then cool and refrigerate until tomorrow night. Took tomorrow off so the pressure is reduced. Still a lot to do. Went to three stores tonight looking for lady fingers for the tiramisu. Nada. Dang. I will not surrender!!
  13. Hah! You gotta time these things just right ?
  14. I think I see a B/DWI in somebody's future. Don't disagree about the priorities of the CAs. That's a long-time problem and I have given up hope of ever seeing a change.
  15. I hope you enjoy it. I've read it a couple times -- maybe about due to read it again.
  16. We lost a great one: Charles Gusewelle, who wrote for the Kansas City Star for over 60 years, passed away this week. He wrote on a wide range of topics -- from foreign travel to life at home with his pets to stories about the Ozarks. He was an avid outdoorsman, had a little cabin in the Ozarks and hunted over Brittanys. One of his books, The Rufus Chronicle: Another Autumn is a great read, especially if you're a bird dog lover, but even if you like dogs or just good, humorous writing. Rufus was one of his Brittanys, who was a bit of a character. If you've got a heart, the story will put a lump in your throat. I haven't watched this show, Away From it All, yet, but it popped up on my Facebook feed. His stuff is usually a sure thing -- I'll watch it soon. Gonna miss reading his stuff, but there's a huge body of it out there to re-read.
  17. Yeah, I do a recipe I call "Fake Pulled Pork". Pork, BBQ rub, BBQ sauce, Crock Pot ©.
  18. I'm leaving that chore for the next owner.
  19. Nice report! Good looking fish, but need to lose the red hat Do tell...
  20. That flies in the face of conventional 'low and slow' barbecue wisdom....
  21. Gonna be a smaller event this year than previous ones. I'm a sentimental dude, and it's gonna be pretty Norman Rockwell at my house. Brined, roasted turkey (about a 15 pounder), mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread stuffing and pumpkin pie. Brother and his wife will bring along something -- not sure what at this point. I do like the good old green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and corn casserole, but I won't go to the trouble to make all that because my kids won't eat it. Might also do a tiramisu for my baby girl.
  22. Interesting conversation. When my Weber bullet got too rusty and messed up I got rid of it and didn't by another. I hated dealing with the water and grease in the pan, but other than that it was great for the little amount of stuff I smoke. Always felt like the lid design was bass-ackwards because the lid fit into the body, not over, so rain would get in and pool in the bottom, even with the expensive cover on. I think the electrics sound pretty nice since they are thermostatically controlled. I really don't like to have to babysit a smoker all day or night. But honestly my current process -- start in the Weber kettle and finish in the oven -- is producing great results with little babysitting, so I don't see a smoker in my future.
  23. Good report! Glad to see you had such good luck. As you know Phil, I hunted private ground in the Greensburg area opening weekend. Scouted properties Friday morning, but the only stubble I had access to was fenced off for cattle. Saw lots of birds early Saturday morning, but the dogs bumped a bunch of them out of range. And, then I missed on a couple shots I should have made. All in CRP. It really slowed down in the afternoon. Saw two good-sized covies of quail, but again they got bumped. I did manage to find and shoot a couple singles. The numbers of birds were encouraging for sure. I hope to get out again before the end of the season.
