Lots of things go into the coloring. But, Colorado River, Greenback and Rio Grande all have the more vivid coloration, in my experience. Seems like the ones from north and west are more muted with less spots.
Funny, I've bounced around from gin to gin. Thought I was a Tangueray guy for a long time, then it was Boodles. Then Bombay, Brokers, Plymoth. Decided I like the label on Bombay best, and the price is right. So that's my gin for the moment. Ought to find a reason to like Gordon's at half the price ?
Love a G&T with lime but haven't tried one with bitters. Brand of gin doesn't seem to matter much in my experience. So spending $30+ on a bottle when $20 is about the same doesn't fly. ?
I think the lemon works in the ginger beer...but the Mule needs the lime. It's got just enough bite in the recipe I posted. Lesson is, it's easy to do. Add, subtract to your taste.
Ok, drinking a Moscow Mule right now with that ginger beer, and I think I'll leave it alone. Pretty good ginger flavor without being overpowering. Write that one down boys. Easy, tasty and cheap.
Ok, so I spent some time reading up on ginger beer. The Jamie Oliver idea of making a syrup and adding seltzer water sounded pretty promising, compared to the recipes calling for yeast and some uncontrolled fermentation and multiple days.
So I bought a knob of ginger and followed a recipe I found. Not enough ginger flavor so I doubled it after the fact by boiling some in a little water and adding it in. Here's the reformulatd recipe that's pretty good, but I'd still go for more ginger flavor:
4 tablespoons grated ginger
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
Bring that to a boil and let sit for a while. Strain the syrup from the solids. When ready to make your drink add:
juice of two lemons
4 cups seltzer water.
Pretty good but I think I'll try halving the water next time. Want a really sharp ginger flavor. This was less water and more ginger than the original recipe I found so really tweaked this. Stay tuned.
They don't taste any better out of a copper mug. Mostly did that for the gf.
What are you guys using for Ginger Beer? She got some Fever Tree, but it's too pricey. I found some Goslings, but it's a little pricey too.
I've gotta try the green chili grilled cheese. Went to pick up some hatch chiles yesterday but they were shriveling up so I passed.
And, since we're taking adult beverages here's what I was sipping on yesterday afternoon:
I've heard about Moscow Mules for years. Saw someone order one the other night, asked the bartender what's in it. Sounded pretty good so I said what the heck and ordered one myself. Pretty tasty -- a nice summer drink. Got on the Amazon app and one-clicked a set of glasses before I had finished the drink ?
Lol. Bob has special meaning to me because in High School we borrowed the statue from in front of the restaurant and relocated it to the sidewalk of our rival.
I was able to corral ⅔ of my progeny for dinner tonight. The tickets I had to the Royals game helped get them interested
My favorite meal, hands down, is this: fried chicken, mashed taters, cream gravy, corn (on top of the taters) and green beans.
